Just in case you've lost the link Here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I hope that your first week has been rewarded by good news on the scales.

Good luck for the next week Flowers

4lb down Smile - despite a wee aberration yesterday due to having to be out the house most of the day (but I did resist the wine! Grin). I think my loss was exaggerated this week as I'd had such a carbtastic weekend away at a youth cycling event. Pasta dishes were all that was on offer in the evening - and sweeties for ongoing sustenance. Blush

GatoradeMeBitch · 12/05/2014 12:35

Coconut oil tastes very coconutty to me, maybe it depends on brand and how it's processed? I buy the cold pressed extra virgin organic stuff - like olives I have an underactive thyroid and it does help rev up the metabolism. I eat a tbsp with every meal. I'm really pleased that fits in with this WOE.

Thumbwitch · 12/05/2014 12:36

Signing in. :)
Just fielding the toddler atm, will do weigh in etc. when he finally decides to go to sleep

willowisp · 12/05/2014 13:03

coconut oil is...edible. Better as a fat to fry in. I bought a massive tub from Costco which is cold pressed organic etc & as nice, if not nicer than the previous brand (sainsburys £6 for 100g I think).

I'm adding a dsp to warm water & soaked linseeds...got to just glug it back. You can add to coffee instead of milk & its quite nice in herbal tea, gives it a bit of sustenance.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/05/2014 13:04

Will give it a go, but am not entirely being sold it here Grin

Hello lovely Thumb, your sheeeeps settled in yet?

willowisp · 12/05/2014 13:05

gatorademebitch how soon did you notice a difference to under active thyroid ? I have high thyroid antibodies & always cold.

Birdinacage · 12/05/2014 13:05

Aftenoon, well I'm down 2lb again this week which is nice. Just had an omelet for my lunch so nicely full now :) congrats to everyone with losses, commiserations to those who have stayed the same or gained.

I do think the water consumption is really important, every time I notice a stall or gain it's always after a day when I haven't had enough water and as soon as the water intake increases the weight starts shifting off again so I would really recommend increasing water first and then thinking about cutting out foods if things haven't improved.

Please could I have some encouragement? I've been following Bootcamp and then Bootcamp Light for 8 weeks now, and lost 6lbs, never going lower than the weight I reached at the end of week 2. I'm not cheating but am in danger of losing faith.

Well done on the 6lbs, first of all Flowers That's 12 packs of butter, just to help you visualise it!

It is very common to see weight loss stop in weeks 3, 4 and/or 5 - but as it's gone on now for another 3 weeks, there's obviously something else going on here.

A typical day is:
B: Lidl FF yoghurt with dash of double cream, handful of flaxseed and 1/2tsp of cinnamon, cup of tea

Cream and flaxseed and (presumably) milk in your tea, could well be the culprits here. Try cutting out the dairy and see what happens.

L: bag of salad leaves & fried chicken or tinned salmon & dressing

This, potentially, could be quite low in fat - obviously difficult without seeing it, but both are relatively low fat sources of protein, so you should be using lots of fat in cooking and in dressings, and a generous dollop of full fat mayonnaise wouldn't go amiss either!

D: meat & veg, v small serving of berries (e.g. 3 strawberries) with cream.

Again, difficult without knowing specifically what you're cooking/eating, but are you getting enough fat? Definitely give the strawberries and cream a miss for a bit.

Water throughout the day - usually manage 2l but not the 3.5 I ought to.

You must drink the water - it's really important.

I was away at a conference this weekend, so had to negotiation hotel food, buffet lunches etc, but was v proud of managing to stay low carb.

Well done! It's really hard to navigate situations like this, and it could be that your choices were higher in carbs than you expected - it's amazing how much stuff has sugar in it!

It's Off on a business trip to Portugal tomorrow until Friday which will involve unavoidable vino, it's hard not to think sod it and be a properly carby twat.

Sometimes there's nothing you can do - do your best, but enjoy yourself.

Could it be that this woe just doesn't work for me? Maybe I should do an Ubercamp fat fast when I get back?

I think it should work for you, if you make the tweaks suggested - each thing in its own right is only little, but together they could be causing you to stall.

Other things to consider:

  • are you eating enough? This isn't a WOE that's about deprivation; sometimes - often because we associate diets with 'less' - people don't eat enough when they're low carbing.
  • are you sleeping well? Lack of sleep can result in high levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which can impede weight loss
  • are you taking any medication? If you're taking painkillers, take paracetamol rather than ibuprofen
  • are you under a lot of stress? Same issue re cortisol!

Focus on what you have achieved so far, enjoy your trip, and plan lots of lovely low carb meals for when you get back.

If you look at the tabs on the spreadsheet, you'll see that there are several plans for ubercamp, which is a series of dairy-free, low carb day menus. There are three days' worth of meals based on meat and eggs, three days' worth of meals based on meat and no eggs and three days' worth of meals based on fish, no meat.

Good luck!

I like this idea Birdinacage I would really recommend increasing water first and then thinking about cutting out foods if things haven't improved.

we can't go wrong with having 2-3 liters of water. Esp now that summer's coming (I hope Grin)

BIWI · 12/05/2014 13:34

Great posts StuntNun

And yes, lots of people on a low carb diet report that their weight comes off in 'lumps'! Nothing for days, then suddenly 3lbs will disappear.

OP posts:
Uplateagain · 12/05/2014 13:43

Well done to all those losers!

Was feeling quite down about my 1lb loss this week as I had high hopes for 3lbs... Having read StuntNun's post about the Whoosh Fairy though - I'm guessing that's what's going on with me. We do have a problem with fairies in our house.. the tooth fairy has a very unimpressive record.

Really enjoying the camaraderie on here too - feel very motivated to keep going.

Uplateagain · 12/05/2014 13:58

Oops - also meant to say thank you so much BIWI and all those who post supportive and encouraging posts. You're fab! (thanks)

BIWI · 12/05/2014 14:01

My pleasure!

Here's a really interesting piece about ketosis

Ketosis is not the same as ketoacidosis, which is a dangerous condition for diabetics.

Lines the other thing I wanted to add was it's really easy to get despondent when some people are dropping huge amounts a week.

But last year and the year before I lost a stone each year. It averaged out at about a pound of weight loss a month. I cried many tears over that, gave in and ate something sugary in else of pity (thus slowing it much further, clever me!) and despaired that I just could not lose weight. And yet, here I am two years on and I get the achievement of being down 2 stones. And I look blinking fantastic. (Total weight loss about 5.5-6.5 stones now). Really, I'm so pleased I stuck with it even if at the time I crawled along.

6 pounds in 8 weeks is a nice healthy weight loss. It will double if you keep going and then you've nearly lost a stone. I was on a low fat diet and I am losing weight a bit faster this way, but I'm extremely sedentary and prone to cheating (was prone to cheating Grin ) so I know for me it will still be slow. But I have lost lots of inches on this woe even if the scales are still slow to budge. Keep going, it will be worth it. The pounds do eventually add up. I'm now a size 12 up top and 14 on the bottom. I used to be a 22-24.

ImSoOverIt · 12/05/2014 14:29

Never - I made bulletproof coffee with coconut cream and butter and it was fine.

Congrats everyone on all the great losses!

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 12/05/2014 14:31

Hi everyone,

We're camping at the moment and I have only the very tiniest bit of battery on my phone so I haven't read the thread yet.

biwi can I offer you a very unmumsnetty hug from yesterday? Thanks

I'm down 4lb so far (weighed yesterday morning as I didn't bring the scales with me!) Low carb camping food has been a success so far. I'm more worried about giving myself food poisoning than cheating! Our cool box is older than I am and I think we need a new one.

Happy bootcamping folks Grin

costababe · 12/05/2014 14:55

Off to look up stress and cortisol affecting weight loss,
Didn't know this has a bearing on weight loss, under masses of stress at the moment, but also towards the end of my weight loss journey so would expect slow losses??
Thanks once again BIWI font of all LC and BCGrin

PeonyStick · 12/05/2014 14:57

Good grief, I blink and miss 5 pages !
2lb off for me - which is good, as I am still going from last bootcamp and now don't have very much to go.

Well done to each and every one of you - some great and solid losses out there. pisseslikehorse thats phenomenal !

*CQ, I hope you are having a fabulous poshlunch - sounds ace. !

stunt I am trying to exercise my way into less saggy skin - I am doing HIt classes x 2 a week and bodypump x2 a week - along with pilates when I just need a lie down and a sneaky snooze I fear however my 45 year old skin has maybe stretched beyond return. My stomach looks ok if I am lying down but when I am standing up - or worse if I lean forwards even a little.... eeeuuuwww - looks like a a wrinkled shrivelled old balloon. thinks the answer is the lie down a lot
stunt your graphs are very uplifting. Hats off to you - well done.

pistey I have tried the cocunut oil/butter coffee this week as the thought did make me feek Envy sick sick - and I avoided it all last BC - but actually I am a real convert. Fills you up massively and is a fab way of getting fat but not more protein in.

beeny Stay alive my friend..... hope the camping goes well.

monkeyfacegrace · 12/05/2014 14:58

2lb off. Pleased with that as have been boot camping since Jan so not the 'first' week huge loss for me.

13lb left to go. Urgh it gets so hard when you get closer to your goal.

Well done everybody else!

linesandlines · 12/05/2014 15:00

Thanks Thanks so much everyone for taking the time to help me out, I really appreciate it. lowcarbil that's a really inspirational story. Congratulations on making such a positive change in your health & outlook.

BIWI thanks for breaking it down. I'll try the water, then berries & dairy. Dairy free will be a wrench, but worth a try! I'll use the travel time this week to re-read John Briffa's book to let the science sink in!

Congratulations to all the losers, there is some really impressive poundage going on! Smile

linesandlines · 12/05/2014 15:02

Oops sorry, lowcarbforthewin not lowcarbil, but she's no doubt lovely too.

cousinsandra · 12/05/2014 15:17

I have low thyroid function too, so am interested in the coconut oil effect. I also used to suffer PCOS and found that a low carb diet really helped.

pingufan · 12/05/2014 15:32

The BP coffee do you make it with instant coffee or do you have to buy a special coffe maker? How much of the butter and coconut oil do you add please? X

Hissy · 12/05/2014 15:40

I false started on the Monday, due to a flask of G&T brought by fab friend to a park... who said wino?

That said, have weighed in today so i can stick to deadline and am at 6lbs off, so DEE-LIGHT-ED.

Have practically no appetite, but am forcing self to eat meat and cheese. have bought creamed coconut (in the block, it was that one wasn't it?)

lowcarb that is so inspiring, thanks! Grin well done you!

PeonyStick · 12/05/2014 15:48

pingu I am not an expert at all - I think if you google BPC there are lots of variations . I used instant decaf ( Starbucks one) with a tablespoon coconut oil and a tablespoon of salted butter - wiz zed up with stick blender .
