So how did you all get on?

Just in case you've lost the link Here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I hope that your first week has been rewarded by good news on the scales.

Good luck for the next week Flowers

No weight off but that's not surprising as I've been maintaining or at least attempting to maintain my weight loss for six months. I also started exercising more since the end of March which interferes with weight loss. I think that your body can't easily simultaneously build muscle and lose fat (hence bodybuilders using cycles of bulking and cutting). I have been putting together some thoughts about weight loss, cheating and set points that I'll try to post this week to give people some extra insight into how out bodies work.

FelixFelix · 12/05/2014 09:52

Well done everyone! I'm weighing in tomorrow as I've been away this weekend and not back home until tonight.

Thank you for the new thread Smile

HolgerDanske · 12/05/2014 09:54

Oh that's interesting, StuntNun. I am just getting back into exercise with a view to quite intense lifting modelled on traditionally male approach, would you have any insight into how this might affect my weight loss?

I'm quite aware that I can't expect great deals of weight lost in the short term if I am focusing heavily on building muscle, but I am quite happy to go mainly by how my body is shaping up (or down Smile)

RoaringForties · 12/05/2014 09:55

3.2 loss for me today, started on Tuesday so I'm pleased with that. I've stayed on the straight and narrow and feel loads better. I'm sure that my eczema is better on this woe, maybe it's the fat or all the extra water.
Congratulations to all the losers.

gillyginger · 12/05/2014 10:00

Morning Smile

According to my dodgy scales I am 6lb down so delighted hopefully will be another food week, am just going to up water and fat, and to cut down dairy

B was avocado omelette ( blended 2 eggswith small ripe avocado (100g) turned out more like a pancake as finished it under grill but was really nice) and a bpc

Also could somebody please add me to spread sheet can't do it on phone and I can't put in New entry on weight tracker at the mo, 6 th May 160lb. 12th May 154lb
Thank you and well done on loses great to hear x

linesandlines · 12/05/2014 10:01

Thanks for the support everyone. They're the answers I was dreading because the dairy and the few berries at the end of the day get me through the rest of the lc'ing, but I have begun to suspect neither are helping.

antimatter you're right, but (excuses, excuses) it's complicated. I own a kidswear store, and it's my dream to design my own range. One of my designers has very kindly offered to take me on her factory visits this week. We both work alone, and she's excited to have company on the trip, and she's being so kind I just don't feel I can turn her down if she wants a couple of drinks at the end of the day. (She thinks I'm a bot of a pisshead) My future career, if not my life does kind of depend on this trip!

holger I haven't had the wine yet!

So, plan is: be as LC as possible on the trip except a couple of glasses of wine, then do a dairy free 2 week proper bootcamp on return. Hnnnnng. If that doesn't work, I'll book in for a Kerry Katona style liposuction and inhale my own bodyweight in cake.

HolgerDanske · 12/05/2014 10:04

Oh sorry I thought your meal plan was an example of your average day..

I can understand what you mean about still having the treats of berries and dairy, but maybe this is part of the problem? This way of life is difficult to navigate if you are still in the mindset that some foods are treats and others aren't.

I wish you a very good week and lots of positive thoughts!

antimatter · 12/05/2014 10:09

linesandlines - I understand now how important it is for you
maybe try to stick yo yhe diet (lots of fish in Portugal!) to adjust your tastebuds and habits and if you feel you have to drink - then do so
when you are back - you will have had 2 weeks of habit formation boot camp and just wine to drop Grin
I'll keep my fingers crossed for your venture as nothing better at ego boosting than your own project succeeding!

StuntNun · 12/05/2014 10:13

The Whoosh

On this WOE (way of eating) when your daily calorie intake is lower than required to meet your energy requirements, your body makes up the difference from your fat stores. (NB Whereas on a low fat diet your body makes up the energy difference by decreasing your metabolism.) Fat cells all over your body release some of their stored fat into the bloodstream but they take in an equal weight of water. The theory is that this preserves the size of the fat cell, presumably in case the calorie restriction ends and the fat stores can be replenished.

Now water is more dense than fat (remember oil floats on water) so the fat cells decrease a little in volume and this is why your waist or other measurements decrease sometimes even though your weight hasn't changed. When the whoosh fairy visits, some 'housekeeping mechanism' is triggered and a lot of fat cells suddenly release their stored water and shrink and you see a sudden drop on the scales.

Basically as you low carb your body is steadily using up its fat stores at a rate of 1-2 lb per week but your body's water levels are fluctuating all over the place so your weight varies significantly from day to day. This is why BIWI recommends weekly weigh-ins to follow the overall trend of weight loss. Note that the whoosh theory is just a theory. There is some supporting evidence such as that the water content of the fat mass increases during dieting.

StuntNun · 12/05/2014 10:31

On Weighing

Here are three graphs of my actual weight loss following this WOE over two Bootcamps last year with only minor wielding of BIWI's stick required. If you're on the MN app then you'll need to use a web browser to be able to see the graphs.

The 'daily' graph is every weight I recorded over the five months, not quite every day but probably most days.

The 'weekly' graph is with weekly weigh-ins plotted (there are some gaps when I was away from my beloved scales).

The 'monthly' graph is with monthly weigh-ins plotted.

You can see that with daily weighing, while the overall trend is downwards, there are times when weight loss slowed or weight actually increased which I'm sure was quite distressing at the time. On the weekly graph the downward trend is a lot more obvious but there are still obvious plateaus and gains. This is absolutely typical for weight loss on a low carb high fat (LCHF) diet and this is why BIWI advises weekly weigh-ins rather than daily. If you look at the monthly graph you can see that in fact monthly weigh-ins would probably be the best interval as the downward trend is obvious and you don't see any of the plateaus or temporary gains that can be so disheartening when they occur.

We're in this for the long-haul people so just because you don't see a weight loss every week, remember that it doesn't necessarily mean that you haven't been losing fat.

OMG we've run out of butter. What am I going to do?

Locarblil I tried to answer your question about the whoosh a couple of posts ago. I hope it made sense.

Ruby not all veg are created equal, it depends on their carb count and their density. You would probably be safe enough with unlimited lettuce but denser vegetables such as swede would rack up the carbs more quickly.

Drogo you may not be drinking enough water. One of the reasons for all the water we're drinking is to flush the ketones out of our systems as high levels of ketones in the blood can inhibit weight loss.

Thereinmadnesslies my weight routinely fluctuates by two pounds either side. I use the True Weight iPhone app which uses a weighted running average to account for fluctuations due to water. It's great for impatient people like me that can't resist daily weighings. See my previous post with graphs of weight loss for more info on why it's better to weigh less often.

Trash I had curry for breakfast too. I was very Blush answering the door to the postman with curry-breath at 9 a.m.

Lines as others have said you need to cut the dairy to see whether it stalls you. Caffeine can stall you as well. In your position I would do three days of ubercamp then a dairy-free bootcamp for a couple of weeks. Have you been taking measurements as you may be overdue a visit from the Whoosh Fairy. Make sure you're getting enough water and fat as too few calories can impede weight loss as well.

Holger that's the perfect approach to take IMO. I think there's a book 'Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess' that advises traditionally male weightlifting approaches to get the best results for women too.

linesandlines · 12/05/2014 10:49

Thanks so much, antimatter, holger & stuntnun. Your support is much appreciated.

I know, it's all about the long haul and the numerous health benefits that have nothing to do with weight. The support on this thread is clearly going to be invaluable.

HolgerDanske · 12/05/2014 10:55

StuntNun very glad to have your recommendation as that's the book I'm following Smile

Bugsylugs · 12/05/2014 10:59

Just quickly running in I really struggle to keep up with all the inspirational chat but I love it.

Lost 3 lbs. well done everyone

Lines personally I think (though I am a newbie this year) you are only drinking just over half of what you should be I think this is probably a major problem as far as the weight loss is concerned. Maybe concentrate on upping the fluid and keeping your incentives and then if that doesnt work maybe reduce the cream. Last bootcamp any week I went up or really plateaued it was always when fluid intake had crept downwards.

BeattieBow · 12/05/2014 11:02

No change for me, but I had an utterly disastrous week, ending in a children's tea party yesterday where I ate sandwiches and cupcakes.

I'm doing it properly this week.

What is Ubercamp? Maybe I need that.

MarcusAurelius · 12/05/2014 11:09

Marking my place here, I'm starting a week late. I had huge success low carbing a few years ago.

Restarting today. I'll just have to log in every time i feel weak until I'm properly in the zone.

EvaTheOptimist · 12/05/2014 11:18

Amazing graphs and advice Stunt!

GatoradeMeBitch · 12/05/2014 11:20

2lb loss Smile

GatoradeMeBitch · 12/05/2014 11:21

Beattie If you look at the spreadsheet there is a tab on the bottom that show you an ubercamp menu. But basically you cut out dairy.

willowisp · 12/05/2014 11:46

well done all you losers Grin

I've done appallingly & have gained a lb. Started week with a urine infection & was advised to drink lots of cranberry juice.

Then I made a cake..or 2...

This week, I am on it...omelette with clotted cream (I know...I need to use it up)
salmon & veggies for lunch...not sure for tea.

Drank warm water with coconut oil in earlier too.

Am inspired by the meals you've eaten & hoping it will spur me on for next week....

weaseleyes · 12/05/2014 11:46

I managed 4lb since Tuesday. It could have been more, but I have a bad cheese snacking habit, which I must rein in. I think both the snacking and the tendency to do it with cheese do me no favours, but am trying to be kind to myself. Mustn't let kindness turn into over-indulgence though! 4lb is a great start, though.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/05/2014 11:46

Fab whoosh explanation there. Never had one although obvs lots did. Maybe my housekeeping mechanism is broken?!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/05/2014 11:48

Lots of you talk about coconut oil. Is it nice? What does it go in/on/with?! Saw someone put it in coffee. Not going to lie, that makes me feel queasy.

olivesnutsandcheese · 12/05/2014 11:59

I just ate a couple of teaspoons of coconut oil Blush

In my defence it's supposed to be very good if you have an underactive thyroid which I have.

antimatter · 12/05/2014 12:20

In my experience coconut oil hasn't got any flavour - hence use in coffe or any frying.
I think I am likely to use less of it as it's solid and easier to measure accurate quantities.
