Hi all, can't believe I have to start the new thread

Slng, lol @ ds2!

Sfx, sparkle sounds nice!

I'm having to bribe ds1 to leave the house atm, that can't be right surely

He had his nativity yesterday, all lines remembered though there was a bit of yawning during it

Just wasted the past hour browsing holiday websites ...

DS1's interest is more physics than biology. Tried to explain the first law of thermodynamics unsuccessfully earlier. Though he is quite sick of Newton's laws of motions: yes yes yes it's inertia that made my toy fall off not because mummy is driving like a loon. (Always blame things on immutable laws of physics .)

sfx - where did you go?

sfxmum · 03/02/2010 21:30

very good laws to be teaching now might as well given those early experiences their proper names
we just went to local Pizza Express full of local parents and children

was thinking of going back to France at Easter any recommendations for Brittany?

tilly just catching up with Caprica

sfxmum · 03/02/2010 21:31

give not given

Kewcumber · 03/02/2010 21:32

I am horribly competitive (along with the rest of the family) however we have all been taught to be graceful winners as well as losers - unless you're competing with family in which case massive gloating and cackling is allowed

Strangely though I'm not at all competitive on behalf of DS - I want him to be happy. If acheiving success (academically or otherwise) makes him happy then I will try to help him if not then really shan't care.

That he is here, healthy and lovely and mine is more than enough for me

dustythedolphin · 04/02/2010 09:04

Quite right Kew

When parents push their kids its just coaching them to look more advanced, it doesn't make the child anymore intelligent in the long run whether they can recite their ABCs at 2 or 4 - reading is a taught skill, like driving or any other taught skill, not a sign of intelligence as such

VBUS at your pyjama tale!

slng · 04/02/2010 09:20

We are not even competitive within the family. The competitive gene seems to be missing. But we do quite well without it. Just goes to show competition isn't everything. Perhaps we just have superiority complex. Perhaps everyone around me have been competing like mad and I've just been oblivous.

slng · 04/02/2010 09:21

Confused Confused Confused Grin

sfxmum · 04/02/2010 10:25

good morning

vbus · 04/02/2010 13:43

Hi all

Yawns all round, DS1 had another nightmare last night. Took DS2 for his MMR today and decided against swine flu jab for both for time being.

Slng - LOL at superiority complex!

MIL is stupidly competitive and forever telling DH & I that DS1 need to be pushed bla bla bla. I'm definitely one for it being child led with the exception of swimming and riding a bike. I think those are two things I think are easier to learn as a child than as an adult so I will keep encouraging him if he refuses to try. Thankfully he now loves swimming and I'll try and get him a bike this summer so we'll see how that goes.

tillyfernackerpants · 04/02/2010 14:23

vbus, if you get a bike make sure its quite a light one. We got ds1 last year and its stupidly heavy! He can ride it but when he gets tired and wants to walk, we have to drag it round then...

Ds1 shattered today, he didn't get to sleep till late yesterday, ds2 woke him up at 6.30am and then we've had school & swimming, he's now asleep in the chair

DS was playing on the computer tonight (typing letters and numbers onto a word document - he's easy to amuse!). He typed "e" and said to me "what letter is that mummy?"

Helpful mummy says "It's an "eh" - what word begins with "eh"?"

DS: "Eh-ro plane?"

I couldn't really argue could I

slng · 05/02/2010 07:55

Good morning all!

Blueberry muffins for breakfast! It's all going downhill from here ...

Kew I heard a radio programme once about the most frequent sound in English, which is probably that one, and it's written in about a million different ways. I have a better memory for what I see than what I hear and have always gone for the "whole word" thing rather than phonics, but DS1 has taken to it like a duck to water and reading everything he can see, though he thought "Barons court" was "Born's carrot". DS2 now demands to be taken on the tube to Born's carrot.

sfxmum · 05/02/2010 12:24

hello all

slng/KC I guess it is different for me learning English as a second language when it comes to spelling I generally just say it and get a feel as to it is right or not , of course that is no way to teach anyone

dd often guesses in context what the word might be not bothering to sound it out

child protection training fir parent helpers at school - cheerful subject to start the day

the had parent over for coffee the went running

must find motivation to study then will be baking so if all goes to plan should be a balanced day

pcworld · 05/02/2010 13:06

Hello, everyone - apologies for being so out out touch lately, have a lot going on. Did you enjoy the night out? Is there a date for a half term meet-up? I would love to catch up if anyone is around. What a lovely day today, we went to Cheeky Monkeys and it was great to be back in Marble Hill park, haven't been for months! Sing, blueberry muffins, what an excellent start to the day, how can it possibly get any better. SFX, sounds like you are having a great, balanced life at the moment, how brilliant. Vbus, hope no more nightmares and plenty of sleep for everyone!

vbus · 05/02/2010 14:18

Hello!

Kew - 19th is Friday.

Quite like to see the orchids in Kew so meet in Kew fine with us. But if it's pouring with rain I don't mind hosting, if people can get here.

Took down stairgates. Feels really odd now. Had it since we moved in.

Birthday party tomorrow. But can you find a birthday card!? F**king Valentine day cards taken over.
