Hi all, can't believe I have to start the new thread

Slng, lol @ ds2!

Sfx, sparkle sounds nice!

I'm having to bribe ds1 to leave the house atm, that can't be right surely

He had his nativity yesterday, all lines remembered though there was a bit of yawning during it

vbus · 02/02/2010 19:17

Sfx- good luck with essay, hope you have a lovely birthday, esp with cake for breakfast

Tilly - I don't mind having a child over without parent if it's someone we know well and who's been to our house before, and would be equally happy if DS1 for DS1 to go on playdate without me in same circumstance. I too have left him at neighbours but only for short periods. Otherwise I'd probably insist on parent being there, they are still quite young and their behaviour can be unpredictable!

Slng - still undecided about swine flu jab, was all for it but cases seem to be declining so may not be necessary

slng · 02/02/2010 20:01

vbus - it's all too difficult to decide about vaccine. We decided that we won't seek to but will take it up if offered, and they sent us a letter last week.

sfx - happy birthday. What can be better than cake for breakfast. A bit jealous now ... No cake at home ATM.

stepfordwife · 03/02/2010 11:40

happy birthday, sfx

stepfordwife · 03/02/2010 11:41

....happy birthday, kew

stepfordwife · 03/02/2010 11:46

..yes, swine flu jab..had decided against it but have got a letter from doctor offering it..perhaps i'll take sing"s tack..

also, DH2 - where i was getting single MMR jabs done - gone bust and no supplies of single mump vaccine anyway so having a think about vaccines generally.
such a responsibility when it's for your kids, isn't it?
ho-hum

slng · 03/02/2010 11:58

Just been to dentist. Very clean teeth now.

Steppie - went for combined vaccine for booster for DS2's mmr. He has one more jab to go and we can stop thinking about stuff like this for a while ... Though primary care trust keeps badgering us about all kinds of jabs ... You'd think they have better things to do...

Happy birthday to everybody!

dustythedolphin · 03/02/2010 12:14

Steppy has DirectHealth 2000 Gone bust !!!?????

OMG...

Feeling very sorry for Dr Wakefield ATM as am sure he's been stitched .... His kids went to our school and they are such lovely ppl, he may not have followed procedures correctly re research, thus "invalidating" his results, but the fact is that UK Gov have already given compensation to several familes whose kids have been damaged by MMR so this whole GMC disciplinary thing stinks as its all about supporting government line and stitching the man who tried, with the best intentions at the time, to show that some kids are in fact unsuitable for combined jabs as they have poor immune systems

(pops down off soapbox)

SFX - would like some chocately motivation, hope your course work is going well

Kew/Kew - Happy Birthdays!!!!!!

slng · 03/02/2010 12:42

sushi - am having raw egg in rice for lunch, inspired by you on Saturday night!

dustythedolphin · 03/02/2010 13:20

Raw egg on rice ?

How was the meet up - where did you go, who went and what was consumed?

Kewcumber · 03/02/2010 13:31

thank you kindly - feeling my age!

Kewcumber · 03/02/2010 13:48

sushi - re pushy parent we are only talking about letters and DS can't write all of his name

Early years foundation is supposed to be about "each individual child learning through high quality play, that?s tailored to them, so they develop at their own pace, having fun, making friends and learning as they play". Not about a specific deadline of reading, riting and rithmetic.

DS is very very resistant if you try to "teach" him stuff. All in favour of feeding his need to learn but he hates feeling that he isn;t getting something right and it becomes counterproductive.

If it worries you then the Numberjacks comic is really quite good and appropriate for quite a wide ability range.

slng · 03/02/2010 14:04

It always makes me laugh when they talk about the "individual child" and "every child matters". The minute you set overall targets you contradict yourself to some extent, but I guess they can't set individual targets nationally . Even targets are not always bad things, but how evaluation is done is sometimes questionable. And then you want to collect statistics to prove that you are worth it... Sometimes I wish the individual child would jump up and bite them. Which they sometimes do, I'm told ... But it's difficult to bite ofsted ... >

dusty - hot rice cook raw eggs so not that raw anymore at point of consumption.

Kewcumber · 03/02/2010 14:14

to be fiar DS's very lovely nursery do genuinely assess each child (very high fees teacher/child ratio) and I'm not aware of any "targets" (of course they may have some but they certainly don't share it with parent or child).

DS has learnt some very important things this term - like what is a herbivore and what is a carnivore. So much more important than addition I feel

slng · 03/02/2010 14:26

I'm also very happy with DS2's nursery since DS2 seems to thrive on the random facts he glens there. I think they seem quite big on reading and writing as well which DS2 seems quite happy with too. (And the ballet and french which he positively wallows in.) My objection to targets is more a matter of principle than anything else. No one has inflicted them on us yet. So far ...

That reminds me - must pay nursery fees ...

sfxmum · 03/02/2010 14:47

hello people brief stop at home after lovely pampering
thanks for birthday wishes
will pick up child then wait for dh and go out for dinner

wave to dusty course going well sent latest essay at 2am proper student me

slng regarding raw egg was talking to thai friend about it she said I must try it and apparently want to take me for Dim Sum somewhere in Barnes

slng/kc have you seen the thread with the man who did the primary eduction review? quite sensible I though

it is like you say sensible targets can improve performance the interpretation of it can be hideous time consuming and ineffective wood for the trees type of scenario

like H&S legislation super important to protect people at work / interpretation often wildly off key with zero understanding of what a risk assessment actually means

dustythedolphin · 03/02/2010 15:54

at pampering, but you're worth it

Might try raw eggs & steaming rice for an eggsperiment

Wait until DCs get put into "ability" groups, then you will see all the neurotic middle class mothers coming out of the woodwork with their, "just being curious, but which group is your child in?" and sneaking into your DCs reading packets during playdates to see if your DC is "ahead" of theirs in reading

SushiMummy · 03/02/2010 16:22

sfx and KC - happy birthday!

slng - raw egg on rice, yum! Another fave of mine with a dash of soy sauce. Yes, it has to be on very hot rice.

As for the early learning at nursery, I am not too bothered/worried as long as DS is happy there. He can learn all these things at the big school.

slng · 03/02/2010 16:43

sushi - I like mine with congee, some soya sauce, lots of white pepper and some spring onions. But it should be breakfast stuff really ...

slng · 03/02/2010 17:19

Have never been competitive. I remember when I was about 11, thinking that I should be upset because someone did better than me but realising that my heart wasn't in it. That was a strange revelation and I've not notice any change since then. Don't know if I'll be competitive on behalf of DC!

tillyfernackerpants · 03/02/2010 18:00

Sfx, happy birthday, hope you enjoy cake for breakfast

kew, happy birthday also

Dh is competitive. He's is talking about buying the books they do at school so ds1 can get a head start. Tried telling him it won't make much difference in the long run but he doesn't listen to me

Ds1 seems quite similar to others on here, he always wants to know about things, the books from the library atm are v fact based, and we look things up on the internet. Much better way of learning I think!!

OP posts:
slng · 03/02/2010 18:39

tilly - google image very useful, though watch out if you are looking for pictures of thrush (the bird) ...

vbus · 03/02/2010 19:40

Happy Birthday KC!

Dusty - LOL, I guess we have all that to come! Even though DS1 could read and spell before he started nursery (initiated by him I might add), I like the fact he has a wide range of targets & topics as there's plenty of other good stuff for him to learn including social and communication skills. They are like sponges at this age and it is great to view the world through their eyes.

At the wkend, out of the blue, DS1 asked MIL if she had a pyjama (what he calls a vagina!) or a willy? She said she had neither and that she had a nightie. DS1 had never heard of a nightie so thought this was hilarious and fell about laughing

sfxmum · 03/02/2010 19:58

oh yes the vagina and willy question is raging here too with lots of giggles from the girls

back from dinner we thought dd's pasta tasted funny she seemed to be ok with it but I am apprehensive seemed off somehow we were not charged for it but she had a few spoonfuls

about learning I agree it is about wide experience and varied topics all children go at a different pace anyway

still dd's class has been divided into groups but I do not know what they mean

tillyfernackerpants · 03/02/2010 20:04

vbus, , we've had vaginas & willies here too. Ds1 also asked where ds2 came from if it wasn't a baby shop so have explained that as best I could when unprepared for it! Not sure if too clearly as he asked dh if he had a special tunnel for babies to come through
