Once we saw a bus plough into a parked car - mum and 4 kids inside were suitably shocked, and so were we! So was the bus driver, I hope, especially after being told by mum in no uncertain terms and decibels.

mellow2 · 10/10/2008 15:41

Sfx - That's upsetting.

sfxmum · 10/10/2008 16:06

oh cripes my washing machines's door came off in my hand when I opened it

xoxo · 10/10/2008 19:22

Mellow: yes, the schools do expect you to do anything and everything for free. You'll find that a handful of parents will happilly muck in and the rest will do nothing but complain. sorry if I sound peeved off about it but am fed up with doing loads of stuff for dd and ds's school and getting just gripes from other parents who are too busy/ unconcerned/ lazy to get off their asses to muck in. Their attitude is that because I am not working, I am obliged to do everything. Because they are working they can get excused from everything.

In fact, because I am not working, we do without a lot of stuff. Our house is small, our car is old and I haven't shopped in anything grander than M&S in many years.

phew Rant over; can breathe again. Thank you for the opportunity will switch on 'nice oxo' again!

sfx: you are either scarily strong or the wm was a bit duff. or sfx-lette was swinging on the door when you weren't looking.

slng · 10/10/2008 19:36

xoxo- What do the school ask you to do? I think I might fall in the camp of those who don't do much though. So far we've only been required to donate cakes, which we did because we accidentally have the right ingredients to bake. But then DS1 has only been in school a month, so it's early days yet!

MrsRecycle · 10/10/2008 19:36

Oh no sfx - I'm surprised it's hasn't fallen off yet the amount that ds climbs on it.

How awful about the accident sadly happens a lot on school run.

Slng - I am so with you on being a few minutes late but, as you'll fir d out each lateness episode counts as unauthorised absence.madnesseh?

Am struggling with keyboard so must go - sbs will be at cmver this weekend.

Sadly. Contract came thru so back to work Monday

sfxmum · 10/10/2008 19:47

good to know about schools and what is expected of us, I don't mind helping out but would be very annoyed if it wasn't a collective effort

mrsR good luck with new contract am sure you will sort them out in a no nonsense fashion

about the door no super powers just a lot of hard water it looks like it is a battle against limescale, should be more proactive but hate using harsh cleaning stuff
dd would not get near WM unless to load unload but she is not very enthusiastic about it, so much like her mummy bless

about the accident DH was too upset to make much sense earlier but apparently it was in Acton and it was a teenager who got hit, he was going on about the mother because he saw her face as she rushed back to the school and realised what had happened, it was just teachers students and parents trying to manage traffic etc, emergency services were yet to arrive

sorrysfx-had a date for tea in Teddington.

Am exhausted - went to acqua and for first time ever had to stop for a few seconds and sloe down as my arms just wouldn;t work A brief and disconcerting glimpse of aging there. Had a slightly concerning moment today when my nose started bleeding but it stopped quite quickly so paranoia didn't set in too badly . Annoyingly (understatement of the year) DS UK adoption will now be delayed further as as my medical done prior to the great mystery of the disappearing platelets will not be accepted and has to be updated/redone.

So somehoe have to get DS's right to remain extended and a visa for Spain in time for us to go on holiday at Xmas as her will not have UK passport in time it seems. Bugger it.

stepfordwife · 11/10/2008 00:48

yep, after 5 years of the school experience, just about mastering the art of sitting on my hands when volunteers are asked for...
having said that, am class rep again for ds1's class -was decided in my absence at pta meeting

but, on the positive side, while they were trawling for a pta secretary, managed to sit on my hands and not mention i can do shorthand...soooooo handy for taking (or not) those minutes...

kew, yes, yes, i know you're a rugby household, but it is england vs kazakhstan. still the wrong-shaped balls tho, eh?

Kewcumber · 11/10/2008 00:50

realised after my comment the Kazazh bit (doh). Surpring I hadn't heard really because KAzakhstan have such a good football team

stepfordwife · 11/10/2008 00:53

..as have england

mellow2 · 11/10/2008 09:08

Thanks for all the tips, ladies.

Well, I certainly learned my lesson. Next time I volunteer, I'll remember that they expect me to do everything for nothing.

Kewcumber · 11/10/2008 09:24

improvement on the bread front with one samllish wee caveat... I forgot to bake it. Did everything (tepid water vit C mixed white, malt and wholemeal flour) two stage sponge method. Left to rise.

Oops busy day - baked about 10 hours afetr rising so collapsed into brick shape again.

However, it is actually quite a reasonable texture and quite edible if a little small.

Don't think I am cut out for this bread business.

slng · 11/10/2008 09:37

Morning all!

Kew! Next time remember to bake your bread. It's not that difficult really. All you need is a wife. I could do with one too. In fact at this point in time all I need is some earplugs. How can two children make this much noise.

SJ99 · 11/10/2008 10:24

Morning all

MrsR - well done on contract , hope all goes well despite that back to school type feeling

KC - good luck with sorting out passport, what a PITA

Slng - thanks for offer of change mat but will reuse a lot of DS eqpt

Sfx - oops about wm door

Steppie - sorry to hear you're havinag manic time, hope not long before builders are finished. LOL at 1860's ref though

Busy day yesterday, car had to be repaired as someone kindly scraped the side of it a few wks back, parents arrived, then ended up meeting few friends in Twix in the evening which was nice but am tired. Luckily DH taken DS out all morning so I can rest. Off to wedding reception later on, think I will be have to be rude and eat and run, can't face a late night!

Hope everyone enjoys the sunshine!

sfxmum · 11/10/2008 12:32

stepfordwife · 12/10/2008 17:29

thankyou, kew
read and muchly enjoyed..
some classic lines
love how unintentionally hilarious OP is with her asides
(actually it was called acorn when i bought it, not cappuccino...)
and how [angry} she gets - it's not funny amid the 2-tier humour - two camps of people taking it seriously and taking the piss.
oh, and i agree, the labrador does look rather jolly

hope everyone's well and enjoying the glorious sunshine
toodlepip

sillybigsausage · 12/10/2008 22:33

Or can do Tues atother times - which days are you at home? Don't need to stay for coffee or anything if you're busy.

rosmerta · 12/10/2008 23:21

ahh yes, the rocking horse thread kept me amused for quite a while! There was a spin-off thread as well, did you see that one Kew?

Sausage, glad you had a good weekend!

Did anyone see Peter Kay's X Factor spoof show tonight? Very silly but also quite amusing, we did wonder how many people would try & phone in their votes!

bunyanvillas · 13/10/2008 09:09

Oh my goodness, Sausage - this is the sort of mini-break I need! So, do I need to start buying The Sun? Will be scouring the papers for offers in Tesco this morning!

sfxmum · 13/10/2008 09:11
