Have just finished reading Peter Carey's "My life as a fake". Great book. This Peter Carey is a genius.

UptoapointLordCopper · 06/09/2010 22:13

Starting on Moby Dick now. Hmm Has anyone read it? Is it any good?

sfxmum · 06/09/2010 23:57

yes I read Moby Dick and quite enjoyed it apart from the massive passages on Blubber which I think I skimmed over in a dazeGrin
there were many things I liked about it.

now at the risk of boring everyone once again with an old anecdote, dh once won a R4 competition by writing the end of Moby Dick in the style of PG Wodehouse which was then read by the guy who played Jeeves (not S. Fry)

sorry cannot read a book bout a whale. Just can't. I need a book about a middle aged slightly plump frumpy woman being rescued from a life of drug=dgery by a prince ( or millionaire or summat) - you know, aspirational reading.

UptoapointLordCopper · 07/09/2010 07:40

Digested read, apparently: "Man finds whale, man loses whale, whale finds man".

I like the opening, so far.

LOL at Kew's aspirational reading. Grin

sfxmum · 07/09/2010 08:38

'you know, aspirational reading'
LOL

OP posts:
tillyfernackerpants · 07/09/2010 12:21

lol @ aspirational reading!!

Sfx, sorry can't join you on Fri though would love to. Am Shock at teacher describing death, sounds a bit Hmm

Windy, know who you are now! Ds1 does 2 activities - karate & tennis. We might add another one but these two are after school as we quite like having weekends free so don't want to push him too much!

Copper, good luck with Moby Dick, never read it! Do like the digested reads as well

vbus, good to see you and dss' this morning, hope they had fun!

Quiet afternoon I think. I've got a load of plums & apples from my mum so think I'll make a crumble, a cake and will probably have enough for some plum parcels (plums in filo pastry)!

tillyfernackerpants · 07/09/2010 12:23

Actually, think I might make this

vbus · 07/09/2010 13:37

Hello

Tilly - do you think that recipe would work with damsons? I have tons of them and jam production line is going strong Grin Could do with make some other stuff too.
Nice to catch up with you earlier. DS1 said it was nice that he and Tilly DS1 would be starting school at the same time even if they couldn't go to same school

Sfx - teacher talk does sound bonkers Hmm Pity about Fri, champers at 10am would have been a treat Grin Would've prob bought something for friend's 40th coming up, can't they change invite to Thurs?

Copper - did read Moby Dic long time ago, was good

sfxmum · 07/09/2010 14:01

vbus since you are about is this the flatbread recipe from Hugh? I wanted to make some to go with spiced butternut squash soup tonight

speaking of jam making dd keeps saying she wants to make some now that she discovered a taste for itHmm I suppose it is kinda the right attitude

tilly bread sounds quite nice actually

spent yesterday with my aunt, took her to doctor appointment had forgotten just how loudly opinionated she is, and in London it is noty really safe to speak your mind on the poor parenting skills of the folk sitting opposite, particularly before hearing them speakGrin

OP posts:
vbus · 07/09/2010 14:09

Sfx - flatbread recipe is easy peasy
250g plain flour, 1tsp salt, 1tbs olive/rapeseed oil, 150ml water. mix all ingrediants to make dough, cover & rest 15min and then make 8balls, roll out and cook on frying pan!

I am also making roast squash soup for tea tonight with flatbread, how very spooky!

vbus · 07/09/2010 14:10

Forgot to say knead for 5mins before resting

sfxmum · 07/09/2010 14:13

thanks vbus less resting=good take it is dry fry?

was looking at dd's clothes and have loads to give away, trousers just pretty new but too short, thin will go for skirts and shorts this year

DS1's school shut today - roof in the process of being fixed and leaked due to downpour last night, apparently. Took him in to work. Just back via Okawari.

Tilly - plum bread looks good. But we've finished our plums! Our little tree had just enough this year to eat a few a day.

sfx - I have an uncle who was so unwise as to comment on a waitress in a language he thought the waitress didn't understand. Never found out whether the waitress did understand, but did refrain from trying his dish.

vbus · 07/09/2010 14:37

Copper -lol at story Grin

Sfx - yes just few mins each side should do it, good luck

Also need to get rid of loads of clothes to make way for Autumn/winter stuff, charity collection coming on Thurs

best go, friend coming soon

UptoapointLordCopper · 07/09/2010 14:49

UptoapointLordCopper · 07/09/2010 19:04

Why have post appeared twice?

New book shelf for kids' room. They are tidying up now so we can actually move the shelf in...

sfxmum · 07/09/2010 19:20

thanks for flat bread recipe, worked wonderfully after the first one, dd gobbled them up as they were being made and mostly forgot about the soup
apparently the lentils scratch her throatHmm it was a purée type affair and tasted more of butternut squash which she loves

OP posts:
sfxmum · 07/09/2010 19:20

oh yes wellies a must and keep a stone and stick handy to scrape them

OP posts:
UptoapointLordCopper · 07/09/2010 19:50

Been telling off kids for scattering toys everywhere. Why do I bother??

vbus · 07/09/2010 21:42

Copper - shelf fitted yet? Don't forget to take loads of plastic bags to shove wet stuff in

Sfx - glad you liked recipe Smile Have to say, took ages to do them on electric hob but still tasted yummy, just took forever to make

Back from gym, now I'm wide eyed and bushy tailed just in time for bed Hmm
