Thanks Cali - I have a slight hitch though. I usually buy vouchers from celebrationshop.co.uk but they are now voucherswork.co.uk and require a spend of at least 100 pounds! I am hunting for another website as I type and will let you know asap. Good grief!

GreatGooglyMoogly · 02/01/2008 16:56

Okay, I have found voucherexpress.co.uk and have e-mailed you!

OverRated · 02/01/2008 20:49

Can any of you help with places to go in NJ? And staying in Queens?

Is he a post-doc, Admylin? That is a fairly average salary for post-docs - there is a standard payscale for scientists. Also, if you are affiliated with a University you may be entitled to cheaper housing - either college owned rental properties or some help with a downpayment if you want to buy. Have a look at the University's website for that kind of info.

Which college is it? I have a few friends from the Dallas/ fort worth area who may be able to help.

admylin · 03/01/2008 08:35

Thanks overrated, he's been offered a job at southwestern - I think it's a med. school working closely with the UT but he was told the job would be privately funded so not through university or med. school so am hoping he can negotiate abit more. Maybe 2008 will be our year at last, hope so.

dodgykeeper · 03/01/2008 15:35

Hi Admylin,
It may not apply to you but I thought it was worth asking about. I assume that you have kids as you are on mumsnet? My friend works in research part of a uni here and she gets rediculously cheap daycare. She couldn't afford to work having twins if they didn't have this perk. If something like this is on offer you may be able to work to help balance things out. I hope things work out for you!

OverRated · 03/01/2008 21:15

Best of luck Admylin - let us know if we can help with anything. The daycare thing is a good point but it does vary tremendously from place to place. Definitely worth looking into. I'll ask my friends about Southwestern.

How is everyone? I'm exhausted - it's making me feel sick Hope it gets better because I'm off to the scrapbook store tonight as a special treat with my friend. Which reminds me, Target has tons of scrapbooky type stuff in their $1 area. Mainly valentine stuff but some more generic ribbons and the like.

Can anyone help with outlet malls nr NYC?

OP posts:

It's quiet on here, isn't it? Is it because Califrau's away?

Is anyone watching the Democrat debate in New Hampshire?

Questions, questions, questions...

OP posts:
chocchipcookie · 06/01/2008 12:34

Did watch a bit of the debate.

But on to more important things! Has anyone made one of those birthday cakes with ready-made fondant icing? How hard it is?

I want to make the fairy castle from a book called 'Two hour party cakes'.

I'm thinking of buying the cake so that the top is flat.

Can I make it the night before or will the fondant spoil?

I think doing it on the day might be a liiiitle stressful.

chocchipcookie · 06/01/2008 12:42

It's the one on the middle of the front cover

search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbninquiry.asp?r=1&ean=9781843306825

The turrets aren't real, they're covered cardboard tubes.

OverRated · 06/01/2008 18:56

From politics to birthday cakes...

You should definitely do the cake the day before to allow all the icing & 'glue' time to set/ harden.

If you bake it yourself, you can always cut the top off to make it flat. And, if you do want the turrets to be edible, you can use mini swiss-rolls. Don't know where youd get them over here though.

I love decorating cakes - it's not really hard but does require some patience. You will post a picture when it's finished, won't you?

Only if it's any good! I'm going to have a practice I think. It will get eaten anyway.

OverRated · 07/01/2008 00:52

California looks awful - hope everyone is ok over there.

Am sure the Target scrapbook bargains will still be here when you get back, Califrau - they were all Valentines day things. You will be back before then, won't you?

I don't think I'll have any need to make a cake like that either, but I'd love to. Let us know how it goes, chocchip.

OP posts:
dooneygirl · 07/01/2008 01:22

Last night instead of watching the debates, we actually went out. As in real dump the kids off and go out, out. Twas lovely.

Actually, I choose to blame Cali for me being so quiet. I heard her mention Etsy either on this thread or another, and have been on it for most of my free time the past few days.

Good luck with the cake. I love to bake, but decorating terrifies me.

I love Etsy too.

We just had a tornado

OP posts:
dooneygirl · 09/01/2008 04:45

It is not a craft porn addiction, it is a jewelry fetish. Please get my vices straight. And I did blame you. I told DH that whatever form of Califrau nickname you are using that day showed me this site. The only time I had ever heard of it was a friend linked her friend's Etsy page on her blog, and I looked at that and decided Etsy was a place for people who made ugly things. Thank you for clearing up that misconception.

Saw the news, OR. Looks like quite a few tornadoes over there. Hope it didn't get too close.

OverRated · 09/01/2008 05:28

Why is it that every thread I go on seems to end up discussing porn or fetishes? Thanks for clarifying though, Dooneygirl

I use Etsy for stealing ideas inspiration.

Where's everyone else?

OP posts:
dooneygirl · 11/01/2008 03:39

What do you make that you shamelessly steal ideas from Etsy, OR?

And why did you send tornadoes this way today?

(DH says every time he looks over my shoulder someone is discussing sex on here)

jabberwocky · 13/01/2008 02:32

Hi all

I have now recovered from my bout with atypical "walking" pneumonia and we have been out of town closing on our new house!!! I spent part of the trip to AR coughing and feeling miserable but things got done that had to be done and now everything's looking up on all fronts.

I have tons of catching up to do as did not have internet connection from New Year's Day until now.

Will try to do a more proper post tomorrow...
