Wow. DH has heard from or of some of our friends that got storm damage. What scary stories. One of his friends is a store manager on the Oregon Coast. He went to the store in the early morning the day of the storm. He had to cross a bridge, and it was already covered in water. When he got to work, the wind was blowing so hard he couldn't get the door open (they are big, bulky supermarket-style doors that slide open, not open in and out) and he had to ride out the storm in his car with 100 mph+ winds blowing. He said he saw a tornado of water in the parking lot across the street. He doesn't know any other way to describe it. The winds died down enough, he finally got the door open, which was good, because the water was really rising in his parking lot, and he had to wait until the water went down the next day to finally make it home. A lot of the roof blew off the store. His home has minor damage, but they're living in the family room of their house, because it has the fireplace, and electricity hasn't come on yet. School won't start for their kids until at least the middle of next month.

We've heard of our other friends in a small town, and I guess their house made it, but their small business flooded. They said the main street of town is a giant garbage pile, the only store in town is a loss, the only medical clinic is a loss, and they're trying to get the only gas station up and functioning. Without volunteers and donations, they wouldn't have anything to drink, eat, basic hygiene supplies, or cleaning supplies. I guess pretty much everyone has a really good attitude, though, and everyone is pitching in to help everyone else. It just really blows my mind what these people went through.

Is anyone else ridiculously cold? I want to hibernate.

What do you all eat for Christmas? It's going to be me, my Dad & DS. We always used to have duck but I need some inspiration.

Hope everyone is having a lovely weekend. Best of luck with the house, Ali.

Last year we had a Costco ham with cinnamon apples, green beans with pancetta and shallots and a not-marshmallow sweet potato casserole, but this year I got 2 free turkeys, so we're basically having a repeat of Thanksgiving. Except for Cooking Light had an amazing recipe for a chocolate pie that I just made, and I might make that instead of the pumpkin spice one I usually make.

I cannot get warm this winter, and it hasn't been that cold. I usually hate hot weather, but I sit around the house freezing. At night I wear DH's jacket backwards and slouch in front of the computer, so I can keep warm, while he sits in front of his with a short sleeved shirt and is fine.

yes, am cold here too. Largely because I almost fainted when I got last month's electricity/heating bill - and it's not been consistently cold here yet. The thermostat is set lower now, and we'll simply pile on the jumpers and socks.

I'm a bit partial to wooden toys too but we're overwhelmed with plastic tat. I live in a very Waldorfy neighbourhood though so have lots of recommendations for more traditional toys & crafty things.

I am baking gingerbread in an effort to compose myself & recover from the film we saw this afternoon. I don't like it when I leave the cinema feeling traumatised.

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

I don't know if I have my vest on, because I don't know what you mean by vest. I already learned NOT to say pants. Is a vest a jumper, is it a sweater (is jumper sweater? I forgot), is it a vest? I'm thinking it isn't a vest in my realm, because those usually don't have any sleeves. I could definitely go for the thermal underwear idea, though. My problem is I wake up about 1 am and I've warmed up so much, I get too hot.

Have you discovered Melissa and Doug toys, Overrated? Love 'em. My two are pounding away from their band in a box right now.

We got our tree and decorations up finally. DH got the tree yesterday, which was great timing, because it was cold and clear. Today it snowed. We made dough ornaments, and are just waiting for them to dry.

What movie did you see that left you so traumatized?

(goes and cowers in a corner trying to figure out the meaning of vest)
