Thanks Frau. I mix jars and homemade and the Hipp Spag Carbonara is the all time favourite...

OverRated · 31/12/2007 18:38

Pick your battles, chocchip! If she loves her bottle so much, worry about it later - unless it really bothers you. I'm sure it is partly a comfort thing. I still find milk comforting. Not in a bottle though

Sounds like your dd is feeling a bit better

chochip - ds1 was an odd little thing about bottles. Had nipple confusion so did ebm in a bottle then wound up putting cow's milk in bottle as well. He finally had his last when he was around, errrm two

As has been said, pick your battles. He's fine now and no strange looking teeth

btw, dh has gone to get the meds for my pneumonia

chocchipchristmascake · 31/12/2007 20:14

Thanks!!! Quite honestly I am not going to think about sippy cups right now for milk. She drinks water out of them so that's something. I think she loves that being held thing while she has the bottle, we have a rocking chair, and I love it too. I think I will wait... She ate solids for lunch today so yes she seems better. Her personality is quite fussy and clingy (unlike my son who was Mr. independent) and I think I need to take that into account too.

But the pediatrician won't like it. It's all about milestones for her...

You have really helped, gals.

Pneumonia, Jabberwocky?

Goodness. Hope you feel better soon.

Happy New Year everyone

Sorry to hear that so many of you have been ill - we have coughs and the DC have runny noses but otherwise we are quite healthy!

We had a quiet Christmas here, just the four of us, and DH and I watched a dvd into the New Year last night, which is better than going to bed before midnight as we usually do

Quick question - does anyone know if it is possible to buy M & S vouchers (online?) and get them sent over here direct? I know I can order them from here and get them sent within the UK but was hoping there might be somewhere that would send them here direct. TIA

Happy New Year to you all.

Anorak and jabberwocky - how are you both feeling today?

Quiet day here - thank goodness. The last week has been surreal with extended family sickness, visits to hospital, etc. Have decided to spend the day inside watching telly, playing with dd, Mumsnetting, cooking and eating far too much 'forbidden' food. Very therapeutic.

GreatGlowingMerrily · 01/01/2008 19:44

Ooh, Cali that would be perfect! I want to give them to my Mum for her birthday (Feb 20th). She lives in NZ but is a Brit and will be visiting family in the UK in April so can use the vouchers then [also longwinded] . I have to get on to it now so that they can make their way from the UK to the US to NZ by Feb 20th!

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE

lol at GGM's M&S vouchers - hope you get it sorted fairly easily.

Sounds like a lovely day Earlybird.

Hey Chocchip.
Hope your ds is feeling better. My two both reverted to bottles when they were ill, even after they had stopped using them. Ds was still taking about 15oz a day at a year as well as eating proper meals. He is now five and is exactly average height and weight for his age so it didnt do him any harm! My dd gave up the bottle no problem but ds was much more fond of his. We gradually made the hole bigger in the teat to smooth the change. Also we used Avent bottles who make a sippy cup part that fits on the standard bottles which is a great idea.
Remember that we all stress about these things and they always work themselves out regardless of what we do!

Happy new year to everyone. I hope you had a good night and aren't suffering as much as my dh was this morning!

Overrated, I totally know what you mean about guests! Its lovely to have other people around but trying to think of interesting, tasty food for every meal is just too much. I have realised that the range of food I actually cook rather than stick in the oven/ have delivered is quite limited. Also guests dont seem to appreciate pasta and ham as much as my ds for some reason. Got the new Nigella book for Christmas so I suppose I should find a few new recipies to cook.

Anorak, hope you are healing well. You sound quite upbeat which is a good sign. Take care of yourself.

admylin · 01/01/2008 21:33

Hi ladies, can I just crash in on you - dh has been trying to get a job in Dallas and they have just offered him 40k (dollar)which seems a joke or am I wrong? He's on alot more than that in Germany but I so want out of here, we couldn't live on that though could we...?

anorak · 01/01/2008 22:13

Happy New Year everyone and thanks for asking after me. I am fine, recovering well and will have more news after my appointment with the surgeon on Friday.

Something really nice happened to me today, lookie here

Earlybird · 01/01/2008 22:24

admylin - Are there other financial benefits attached to the offer - housing allowance, car allowance, private health insurance, etc? Will you try to live off that one salary, or will both of you earn?

Without knowing specifics of your family/lifestyle, I would have thought that salary is on the low side.

chocchipcookie · 01/01/2008 22:26

Anorak - you are an inspiration!!!

Admylin - 40k is not a lot in Dallas, I think that's very low to expect someone to relocate. Housing is pricey there?

There is no way we could manage on that and we live in Ohio which is cheaper. You also need to check on health insurance. You may have to contribute (co-pay and deductibles watch out) on most plans.

To give you an idea on prices, I had a dental crown done last week which was $900.00 dollars and every bloody pediatrician visit seems to come in at around $100.00. Petrol is around &3.00 a gallon and set to go up. Our heating bill runs at about $250.00 a month in winter and the same in high summer for air-con.

OverRated · 02/01/2008 00:17

Oh yes, we used the avent sippycups (because I had the bottles from the breast pump and was determined to use them for something) - they were great.

Admylin, 40k is not much. At all. But we have lived off that for the past 3 yrs and survived (in Chicago, where things are not cheap. And our sales tax is almost 10% ). If your health insurance is covered, it is certainly do-able but it depends on your expectations and lifestyle.

How lovely, Anorak I wasn't sure whether to lol (at the picture not the situation, obvisouly) or at (.)_

OP posts:
dooneygirl · 02/01/2008 02:15

Admylin, are you sure they didn't mean 40K Euros or something??? (no, I don't think you got it wrong, but seriously, that little for a relo?) My best friend lives off of her husband's income, which is about 1K less than that. They have to watch every penny, and I do mean EVERY penny, and they go in the hole a few hundred dollars a month. They've finally depleted their savings, and she's taking on odd childcare and cleaning jobs here and there to go as long as possible as a SAHM. I know the housing in Dallas is cheaper than here, but they bought back in 1991, and their house payment is several hundred a month lower than the average apartment payment. They DO have great insurance, which they pay nothing for through the company, and it pays almost all of their medical bills.

alipiggie · 02/01/2008 03:13

Admylin - what does your dh do? If it's IT, let me know as that's the industry I'm in and may be able to investigate further for you. Another word of warning, car insurance if you get a car will be very high as you won't have a US driving license. You will also need to do a driving test as well as there's no reciprocal arrangement.

admylin · 02/01/2008 10:17

Thanks for the input, it was 40k in dollar not euro, he even has more than that in euro!
The health insurance would be included as the job is at a medical school (dh is a research scientist) so now I have to convince dh to try to negotiate a higher starting wage for sure but also decide if we should just do it and suffer for the first couple of years just to get out of Germany. We've lived on poverty line as a student family so I know I can do it.
