lol @ the frantic waving.

Glad you are ok, Ali. I only have a social life because I take DS to places. If it weren't for him, I think I'd be the weird cat lady who never goes out but stands in the window and scowls at passers-by. Or perhaps that is what I will become [self-pity]

I may need support next week because my mum is coming. I love her and am really looking forward to it but I will be mean and stroppy and generally unpleasant and she will wish she hadn't bothered to come and I will feel guilty and I'll know I'm behaving like a spoilt 13 yr old and I will know I don't want to but won't be able to stop myself and... oh dear.

So, who's looking forward to more snow?

GreatGooglyMoogly · 21/03/2008 14:41

Welcome betty . I am in NY State though we are heading back to the UK at the end of August. They are a lovely bunch on this thread so do join in!

It is mighty windy here too, ali - lots of branches down in our backyard. I am actually wondering whether my 2 year old might blow away if I take him to the playground!

Happy Easter all! After spending our first US Easter last year with only horrible American Hot Cross buns, we have stocked up on English ones (though most got a bit squashed in transit!) and my lovely sis in NZ sent a pack of Choc Cross buns too! Definitely no dieting in my immediate future

Earlybird · 21/03/2008 14:59

Hi everyone - haven't been around much, but do lurk, though often late at night when I struggle to stay awake so don't post when all of you are here chatting. Guess that's why I'm called Earlybird!

Have any of you been on spring break yet with your dc? We've had a great week in the Los Angeles area visiting friends and making our first ever visit to a Disney park. Great fun, though hugely crowded.

Jabber - can't believe we haven't managed to meet yet, and now you're moving! Sounds a great place for you and the family though, and hope you'll all be very happy.

Thanks All! Left Mumsnet open after writing my message as I meant to check any replies but went to bed instead. DH ended up reading my message and now thinks he is forcing me to move across the pond. Don't feel like that - but just wonder why I'm not more excited about "moving home". Maybe I'm just weird. I'd probably feel the same way if I would move to another county.

Hi Ali, I grew up in Fort Collins. My Mom lives in Loveland and one brother in Erie and one in Westminster (so not like I wouldn't have lots of family around if we moved!). Boulder is a lovely area!

Weather report from the UK (to join in with the rest of you!) it's cold, rainy, but have had lots of sun earlier in the day. Spent the day decorating eggs with British friend who had never done it before. Ah, the smell of vinegar and hard boiled eggs takes me back. ha ha. Hope you all have a lovely Easter.

fatbettty :-). I lived in Erie , before moving here to Boulder. Fort Collins and Loveland are great. Westminster great for commuting to all areas. Two ares for you to really consider - Superior and Louisville, depending on whether you want modern or older properties. Louisville keeps being voted #1 place to live. I have many friends there and Superior as well. Erie is very up and coming and the new community center there is awesome - fabulous with a great pool, climbing wall etc.

You really will be down the road from me . I"m so excited.

Does your H have a sponsor for the visa. Do you work? If so what do you do? Loads of questions. Let me know what I can do to help as well as your family obviously. Tell your H it's wonderful here and you will all truly have a wonderful quality of life.

I hope you are all busy doing Easter/ Spring type things. Do you think the zoo will be busy tomorrow morning? I am not good at knowing how things will be on Easter Sunday over here.

I have an important question: Does the Easter Bunny lay eggs? I was under the impression that the bunny just brought them in a basket but my friends say it lays them I pointed out that Bunnies don't lay eggs but that didn't seem a strong enough argument. Please tell me I am right. My whole vision of Easter will be shattered if I find out I am wrong.

Off to collect my mum later. I'm excited. And nervous. I suspect she will bring a collection of cadbury's eggs

Sounds like loads of fun, Cali. We did all of our Easter stuff last week, because PIL were here, and it was just much more fun with them.

We did the big geeky thing yesterday, and went to The Wiggles. The kids both love them. DH went, too, and he said he had loads of fun. Both of their little faces lit up, and they sang and danced along. We got really good seats, we weren't on the floor, but on the very bottom rows of not the floor, and were even with the stage, so very good view. DH was freaked out by the number of women who were obviously quite enamored with Captain Feathersword. He thought it was really scary they were in lust with the characters on their kids' shows, and I have to say I don't really disagree with him.

Before I forget again, for all you in Ohio, I highly recommend Easy Off no fume oven cleaner.

I am going to attempt a cottage pie within the next few days. I had what was called a Shepherd's Pie (thanks to MN, I now know it was a Cottage Pie) at a restaurant years and years ago, and found it to be downright disgusting. But I was also beyond picky back then, and pretty much disliked everything that went in one except for the mashed potatoes and cheese. I have spent a long time trying to find a good recipe, and hopefully found one that I really will enjoy.

at the thought of instant mash. Potatoes are truly my downfall. I have a sweet tooth, but can deal with small portions of dessert, but can't help myself when it comes to practically any potato product.

I don't like lamb. At all. Ever. I am still picky when it comes to lamb. So Cottage Pie it is for me. I actually found a recipe where you slow-cook seasoned beef the day before to use in the pie, so it will be a two day affair.

ScienceTeacher · 24/03/2008 08:19

CCC/Dodgy, have you been to the new Ikea yet?

chocchipcookie · 24/03/2008 12:18

Have not been to IKEA (or Mumsnet come to that for ages). Am working nonstop and have been to London. Hooray! Still snowing here but very lightly. I'm also on a no-carb diet. Yawn.

anorak · 24/03/2008 12:40

Hello all, gosh you have covered a lot of subjects since I last looked, easter eggs, shepherd's pie, moving to colorado, chopsticks, egg-laying bunnies

I developed sore eyes last week as I had been feeling too unwell to do much and had done too much sitting looking at the internet, sewing, reading, and TV. So I consigned the computer to the bare minimum for a few days.

And I finally was able to take up invitations to people's places - first time since I moved to Bermuda on Nov 1st. Not one party but two, one on Friday and one on Saturday. Met heaps of new people, got a sunburn, sampled traditional Bermudian Good Friday food (fishcakes inside hot X buns!) and I actually drank alcohol without it making me sick!

All back to normal today, as it's not a public holiday here. But feeling much cheered up by the weekend's events. Feeling reasonably well and don't have another chemo till Thursday. Have to take DD to the airport later she is going on a school trip to Washington DC.

I can't remember how much the trip cost, about $1600 I think, for a week. We thought it was really good value for flights, hotels, and the number of activities crammed in - museums, Amish village, White House, memorials, bowling, cinema, restaurants, shopping and so on...DH and I both wanted to go too! School trips have changed from my day, it was all old churches.

DD was soooo horrible at the airport, she had a go at me for getting 'all dressed up' (I changed from old leggings into a T shirt and jeans and put a wig over my bald head) saying 'no one will see you'. Like I'd go out with my bald head exposed anyway. And she got really arsy when I insisted on going into the airport with her to make sure she met her group ok. I don't understand how she got so spoilt.

Eyes ok now, just have to make sure they stay that way. Glad you got your Feminax - it's the difference between happiness and misery, I reckon.

chocchipcookie · 24/03/2008 15:40

Anorak, she sounds just like my son to whom I am a perpetual embarrassment and failure.

I think $1600 is quite good value.

My son is 16 and i have just paid $4500 for a four week uni summer school excluding travel.

UnderRated · 25/03/2008 04:17

Yes, I agree with Cali re Cottage & shepherd's pie. Mine is a combination of the two she described, but never ever instant mash! Have you made yours yet, Dooney?

Sounds like you had a lovely weekend, Anorak, although the fishcakes in HCBs must be an acquired taste. Hope your DD enjoys her tip. Sorry she was arsey. She sounds like a teenage girl to me - all hormones and lack of control. I'm still a bit like that tbh - I think I am still mean to my mum at times, knowing I am doing it but not meaning to but unable to stop myself. And I feel horribly guilty. I think we have ishoos! Is lovely to have her here though and I am sure your DD loves you more than she lets on. Kids, eh?

We're going to brave the Rainforest Cafe tomorrow.

fatbetty · 25/03/2008 10:53

Hello All! Glad to hear you all had a good Easter. We had snow in the UK, which was a strange way to spend Easter. All the lovely flowers that were blooming are now hunched over. DH and I meant to have cleared out loads of stuff over the weekend and got nothing done. Oh well.

jabberwocky · 25/03/2008 18:25

We're back from a week's trip to new house. Still one truckload to go in 6 weeks and then it's done!

earlybird - good to see you again. I really would like to try to get together at least once before we move. I'll do my best to find a day for a mommy trip into Nashville

re: Easter Bunny - I like the story about how the goddess Oestara revived a frozen bird, except its wings didn't work anymore so she took pity on the flyless bird and turned it into a bunny, which then laid eggs!We had an abbreviated Easter celebration as that was the day we had to drive back home. Just plastic eggs with chocolate inside tucked into a little basket. I usually really get into dying eggs the night before.

dooneygirl · 26/03/2008 01:32

I don't think she's spoiled, Anorak, I think she's just a teenager. I would have acted that way at her age if I wasn't petrified of my mother.

Was wondering about you this weekend if you were at your new place, Jabberwocky.

Why yes I did make my Cottage Pie, UR. It was amazing comfort food, I'm telling you. Colin told me it was the best dinner ever, however, I've heard that about 8 or so dinners, I'm afraid. I settled on this recipe, there were so many, I couldn't figure out what would be "authentic". Instead of baking the pot roast, I braised stew meat in everything but the veggies, and added them in at the end. I made us cumin pork tacos with avacado/pineapple salsa tonight, and Caitlin wouldn't eat them, so she's having left over Cottage Pie, and seems to be eating that.

We saw Horton Hears a Who today. Cute film most of the way through, but was worried about the kids thinking it was too scary at the end. Colin decided that the bad guy was cool, and Caitlin was on my lap anyway, and seemed to do fine.

It will probably snow here in the next few days. That would make it the latest snow ever in the Portland area by 20 days. I was invited to the beach with my friend this weekend, but didn't go, and am glad I didn't. I'm holding out for when they go again in summer, and it has to be nicer. Doesn't it???

anorak · 26/03/2008 11:16

Well I've figured out why DD was prickly on the way to the airport. It seems she has taken her laptop with her, against our advice. It is missing from her room and when I did the bins I found a note she had left herself with what to pack in her hand luggage and it was on the list.

She must have been s**tting herself wondering if I would find out and make her leave it behind - which I would have done.

If it gets lots or stolen - her problem. I just hope the teacher won't think what an idiot I am for 'letting' her take it [anger]
