BFP after IVF - anyone want to join me in the wait for first scan?

Sensitive

Hi everyone,
I’ve just had our first cycle of IVF and although we had very slim odds of it working (low AMH, low AFC, male factor, which led to only 2 mature eggs which thankfully led to one perfect day 5 blast). We are absolutely amazed and over the moon that it worked despite everything, but I am really struggling with the wait for first scan. I almost feel with infertility (we TTC for 6/7 years) that it does make you anxious and I’m finding the wait to my first scan (6th June) unbearable. I don’t want to seem ungrateful but I really wish I could enjoy it or relax a little but instead I am worrying about miscarriage and things I can’t control. For me this has been the worst bit of IVF so far, and I’d love to just be able to be happy so I don’t look back (if it does work) and wish that I hadn’t been so anxious and scared.

Is anyone else in the same boat who wants to keep me company? 🥹 Or can provide some tips on how to distract myself and cope better? I know there’s nothing I can do to change the outcome and what will be will be, but I don’t think I’ve ever worried so much in my life.

Thank you 🙏

@LouP87 Hahaha I booked mine for the 24th ☺️☺️ already looking forward to that. Just hoping to have atleast a week of no worrying and chilling. I’d love a week of no anxiety to be honest!

@AnnieStar12 Make sure you have at least a week in between scans - I think too many close together can be harmful. I asked them
today whether I can have one in between now and the 12 weeks and they said yes as long as a week or so apart because of the heat. Not meaning to scare you but I was unaware of it so thought I’d tell
you. I think the advice is 2 weeks in between scans (and it says that where I booked for private scans), obviously totally get your need for reassurance with your past experiences though. ☺️

@HopefulllHolly oh I’ve never heard that scans can cause a physical harm to the pregnancy. I thought the two weeks advice was just to be sure there’s enough time for growth.

HopefulllHolly · 06/06/2024 12:24

@AnnieStar12 Yeah I hadn’t heard but the nurse and obstetrician said today to avoid too many of them because of the risk. Surprising but it did feel warm once they’d said it!

Weird! I had to have many scans throughout my whole pregnancy with my DD, especially in the early months. Defo was often less than two weeks apart. No one ever said that to me. But now I’m obviously worried!

HopefulllHolly · 06/06/2024 13:12

@AnnieStar12 Ah don’t worry! I’m sure it’s fine! Was just surprised when they said it today. I asked if I was ok to have one in between this scan and the 12 week and they just said yes but make sure you have them with more than a week gap between them because of the heat. Anyway! Everyone should do what they need to do to get by, the journey is hard as it is. 😊

@HopefulllHolly thanks, maybe I’ll ask my ivf clinic to move my one with them so there’s over a week between the one with the EPU.

Hope you’re feeling happy and anxiety has reduced now you’ve seen the little heartbeat!💓

DippyDuck19 · 06/06/2024 13:51

My scan went well. Measuring 7w+5 and heartbeat was 172 ❤️ so relieved! They couldn't see where the bleed is coming from but they are not concerned. We are officially discharged!!!

@AnnieStar12 I've had 3 scans in the last 12 days. My clinic have just said there is no harm to baby.

HopefulllHolly · 06/06/2024 14:55

@AnnieStar12 Sounds like it’s another thing clinics tell you differing stuff on! 😅😅 Sorry I hope I didn’t scare you - was shocked myself!

Thank you @SETTC87 ☺️ Take each day as it comes and hopefully it goes quickly. It’s worth the wait, so magical! I’ve not stopped crying with happiness today.

@DippyDuck19 Congrats on being discharged and having a good scan ☺️

Congratulations @DippyDuck19 @HopefulllHolly @LouP87 such good news, you must be thrilled!

We had our first scan brought forward to rule out ectopic as I had some pain, but now I wish I had been able to wait … I know the further on you see the heartbeat, the better the outcomes. Whilst we saw the heartbeat, it was only 108 as so early. I'm back in anxiety land counting down the days to the 8 week scan now (one week Monday). We are planning that one and then if all well, an 11 week one with an NIPT. I registered for maternity services today, which felt very scary / real too.

AnnieStar12 · 06/06/2024 15:50

@DippyDuck19 Congratulations on a positive scan! What a great feeling it must be to get discharged.

Been doing some googling inbetween work meetings it seems there’s no evidence to say that scans pose a danger, but it is suggested that you should wait two weeks inbetween just incase🤷‍♀️
So I will have a think about my scan plan..

DippyDuck19 · 06/06/2024 16:09

@HopefulllHolly @LouP87 congratulations on your scans too!!!

My 12 week scan is the 11th July. Think I'm going to book a private scan on 23rd June when I'm 10+1 as July seems so far away! Am hoping to combine the scan with the sneak peak blood test to find out sex of baby.

HopefulllHolly · 06/06/2024 16:09

@Leaf86 Oh bless you! I thought once you have the heartbeat the risk goes down. They didn’t tell me the pace of ours, said they don’t do it. I’m kind of glad as it means I don’t have something to fixate on. I’m sure your baby is totally fine! Try not to worry.

@AnnieStar12 I feel terrible for telling you now! I’m sorry! Hope I haven’t worried you or scuppered your plans. Sorry 😔

I feel much less anxious this afternoon, been really happy and it feels real now. Maybe it’s seeing it in there and knowing all my lack of symptoms recently meant nothing at all, I don’t know, but I feel much more content. I have been absolutely shattered today though, treated myself to a long nap, and I still feel like I’ve been hit by a train i’m
so exhausted. My other half’s been talking about all the stuff he wants to do in the house before a baby arrives which is really cute 🥹

Are you guys going to find out the gender (that feels like a long time away I know) but just curious? My partner wants to but I wanted a surprise but now I’m thinking maybe it would be nice to know, I think it would help him feel more bonded with it too. So surreal even thinking about it after 6 nearly 7 years of TTC!! 🥲🥲🥲

HopefulllHolly · 06/06/2024 16:11

@DippyDuck19 Oooh just saw you’re going to find out the gender. 🥹 I’m so excited either way! Boy or girl as long as it’s healthy. The thought makes me really excited ☺️☺️☺️

@HopefulllHolly dont be silly, useful to know what other clinics say. And it seem that’s quite standard advice to wait two weeks between scans. I’ll speak to my OH later and might revise our plan.

As for gender, I plan to do the NIPT test at 10 weeks if I get to that stage and you can get gender results from that same blood test. It’s what I did before so just gonna do the same again.

DippyDuck19 · 06/06/2024 16:17

@HopefulllHolly I really don't mind what I have and pre-TTC I always said I wouldn't find out for the first one. But going through ivf I have felt so unprepared and hated the lack of control, I've decided I'd like to find out. I know I can't control what it will be but at least I can feel prepared. I feel like waiting for the unknown again may raise some anxieties which I've experienced through my 3 year ivf journey.

Leaf86 · 06/06/2024 16:38

@HopefulllHolly thank you! Yes the miscarriage rate is something like 10% at 6/7 weeks (post heartbeat) but drops to 1-2% at 8 weeks if you don’t have symptoms and haven’t had one before. I read that they want it over 90 at 6 weeks and over 120 at 6.4-7 weeks so I’m not worried per se, it’s just wanting to see / know that progression! 🤦🏼‍♀️

HopefulllHolly · 06/06/2024 16:55

@AnnieStar12 I feel very unprepared for all the next steps. Is the NIPT done on NHS? That’s not the one they stick a big needle in to the baby is it? I might do the same as you then.

@DippyDuck19 Oh absolutely I totally get that, I think I feel the same. I’m more just excited to know what it is and have it to look forward to. Exciting!!

@Leaf86 I’m sure baby is perfectly fine but I definitely get how you feel. It’s draining all the waiting and what-ifs.

OP posts:
AnnieStar12 · 06/06/2024 17:00

@HopefulllHolly no we don’t get NIPT on the NHS in England as standard.
It is much more accurate than the NHS tests they do at 12 weeks. So you’d need to do NIPT privately, but gives almost 100% accuracy for the main chromosomal issues, including downs.

HopefulllHolly · 06/06/2024 17:12

Thanks @AnnieStar12 I’ll look in to it ☺️ Gosh I don’t want to think of any more issues!!

AnnieStar12 · 06/06/2024 17:35

@HopefulllHolly yeah don’t think about it! Just enjoy your scan results for now :)
you can’t do any of that till 10/12 weeks anyways

DauntedAF · 08/06/2024 06:49

Hi all

Daring to believe that I can join this forum! 9dp5dt today and have my bfp pic below, can barely believe it! Only have bloods on Tuesday so it'll be another two weeks I guess until I can get my scan but feeling cautiously optimistic which is unusual for a doomsdayer like me!!!

Anyone else similar timeline? How ye all doing??

Vian67 · 08/06/2024 07:49

@DauntedAF congratulations!

my scan is this coming Thursday and it can’t come soon enough 😣 good luck with wait

HopefulllHolly · 08/06/2024 07:51

Congratulations @DauntedAF ☺️☺️☺️ Hope the wait for the scan goes quickly for you. Not sure if anyones on the same timeline as you, but a couple not too far off. We can keep you company 😊

AnnieStar12 · 08/06/2024 08:44

@DauntedAF congrtas! Does that make you 4 weeks pregnant today? I’m 5+1 today so not too far ahead of you.

@Vian67 Thursday is only 5 sleeps away! How many weeks will you be by then?

I was having period pain type cramps for hours yesterday. I’ve slightly lost the ability to think rationally, and of course that could be a good sign, but I got myself worried so got my OH to buy me extra tests. I just did one with FMU and it’s showing 3+ so I’m delighted to have a little bit of reassurance this morning. Last time I tested was last Saturday and it was 2-3 so shows I’ve progressed which is all I needed to feel calm again.
