Is it too soon?

Hi Is anyone starting IVF in January/February next year?

We had our first failed IVF cycle in October and looking to go for our second cycle but the way my periods are it falls over xmas when they are shut.

So we are starting in Jan :)

I had a single fresh embryo transferred last time, implanted but then ended in miscarriage. Clinic have agreed to try two for my FET next month. I’m just turned 43, and currently have 7 in the freezer, so if it doesn’t work I can try again but my personal cut off is 45 so with that time frame if I don’t try them in pairs I probably won’t get through them all.

Gardenlady543 · 12/01/2021 20:39

@Mancbear88 I discussed it with my specialist before my fresh cycle. I was originally quite keen for a double, I had always wanted twins and the chance of success is higher than a single transfer. I really wanted my first transfer to be successful and even discussed implanting 1 good and 1 not so good embryo. She said she wasn’t for a double but that if I wanted it she would allow it. Then the day of the collection the embryologist said their interpretation of the HFEA guidelines to prevent high risk pregnancies meant they were not doing any double transfers no matter what the reason. From what I’ve seen the chance of pregnancy is the same from implanting the same embryos in single transfers during separate cycles as a double transfers.

Mancbear88 · 12/01/2021 20:52

@Gardenlady543 I’d love twins too (saves going through it again!) but I know they’re high risk.

I’m 99.9% sure I don’t even want to discuss it with them for this one, thinking more for the future.
I’ve got two frozen ones left then one more NHS cycle. However if these two don’t work and I get two or more embryos from the next cycle I think I would be more inclined to then as that would be something different.

Gardenlady543 · 12/01/2021 21:02

@Mancbear88 that seems sensible. My opinion on double transfers changed during my fresh cycle, I had issues with progesterone, first I reacted to it and then it didn’t seem the dose was high enough and I started bleeding early so my first transfer was unsuccessful. I’m lucky that I have 8 frozen (we’re with access fertility and have paid for the 2 fresh cycles plan). Until I’m absolutely certain that we’ve got the protocol right, especially the progesterone, there is no way I want to risk 2 embryos at a time. I’m 35 so doubles aren’t usually considered but for ladies over 40 clinics may be more willing, because of the higher chance of aneuploid embryos.

There is still a higher chance of identical twins with IVF so 🤞 it could still happen! All I care about right now is having a healthy child though.

Mancbear88 · 12/01/2021 21:57

@Gardenlady543 100% would be happy with the one. It threw me a little when the nurse mentioned it as I’m just 33 with top quality embryos so I didn’t think it would be an option. It’s kinda my thoughts if I did a double and it failed that’s two gone in one go!

I think after a miscarriage, two Covid cancellations and a failed fet in the last year im due some luck this time!

Progesterone is tricky isn’t it, I think it’s right to make sure you have that right and with so many eggs you’ve got a great chance.

Hey everyone. I've not been online in so long - but thought I'd check in as now CD1 and start stims tomorrow for my fresh second cycle.

I stimmed for 13 days in cycle 1, so looking around 26th Jan for EC if all goes the same.

I am on 200IU Menopur

MF1981 · 12/01/2021 22:13

@Mancbear88 I’m nearly 40 and am having a double transfer - my clinic suggested it and we were happy to do it. My thinking is I am not getting any younger and have 2 As, a B and a C in the freezer and this FET is taking so long that I want to move quickly to another fresh if needed. Obviously I’m hoping that this FET works but just in case. My clinic said that once you get beyond 38 your chances increase with a double transfer versus a single - they said by about 10%. So I’m putting both A grades in this time and hope they stick. If they don’t then we’ll re-assess. I’ve requested a progesterone test on transfer day as I’m worried my dose is low.

kikisparks · 12/01/2021 22:18

@Mancbear88 I am wondering about it for my last 2 embryos as they are a 4BC and a 4CC but to be honest I’ll probably just do single transfers. I don’t want twins if it can be avoided (although of course we’d very much take them over not having a baby at all) and I don’t like the extra health risks. I may change my mind down the line though as if my FETs don’t work I want to do my next egg collection before I turn 35, and the FET process is so long. I’m pretty sure my NHS clinic won’t allow it until I’m older/ had more transfers though.

Anyway maybe (hopefully!) this transfer will work and it will be a moot point!

Doremifasol · 12/01/2021 22:27

@unknownscot I am starting tomorrow too! It's my first fresh cycle, I am on 125 Bemfola.

Mancbear88 · 12/01/2021 22:52

@kikisparks it’s the extra miscarriage risk for me, if it works I’m going to be a nervous wreck as it is without adding extra risk. So many things to consider isn’t there!!

Why’s your FET process so long? Mine was just two weeks of oestrogen then 5 days of progesterone.

unknownscot · 12/01/2021 22:55

Good to have someone on a similar timeframe 🤞🏼✨

IVFat43 · 13/01/2021 00:55

It’s pleasantly reassuring to read your my age, I turn 43 in Feb but this will be my first go, we start tomorrow on a short plan taking Norethisterone twice a day for 10 days to then bring on a bleed followed by Menopur and scans etc..
Well done to get 7 in the freezer, that’s really positive.. I hope we’re as lucky..
We’re opting for the genetic testing for peace of mind and hopefully reduce miscarriage but it does worry me reading they may not survive the freeze, that is if I get to that stage in the first place.. also hoping to have 2 Embryos transferred done, but they’re a little reluctant as I’m having the genetic done it reduces miscarriage..
Good luck 🤞

MF1981 · 13/01/2021 07:11

@Mancbear88 I’m having a fully medicated FET with down reg which is why it’s taking so long. I asked for the version you’re doing but my clinic don’t do it anymore as they say they get the best results with the fully medicated cycle. They said they would support a natural cycle if I wanted to do that but not the version you’re on. So I’ve been down regging since 20th Dec and started progynova almost a week ago. Next scan is 21st Jan and hoping to switch to progesterone and then transfer the following week. So it’s almost 6 weeks in total.

kikisparks · 13/01/2021 07:52

@Mancbear88 it’s fully medicated, like @MF1981 they didn’t offer me any other option.

So it’s:

Call on day 1 of your period to book in
3 weeks later prostap injection
2 weeks later first scan- if that’s ok, start meds
1-2 weeks later next scan
1-2 weeks later FET
2WW

So can be 2.5-3 months per FET and if it’s unsuccessful you have to wait another month to book in again. So 3 FETs will take about a year if there are no cancellations and you never have to wait to book in (sometimes they’re full so you have to call the next month).

kikisparks · 13/01/2021 07:53

And that’s also assuming there are no lining problems or cancelled cycles due to lining not thickening enough.

IVFat43 · 13/01/2021 08:08

Sunbird24, post last night was a reply but not sure, it looks like I missed your name..

Sunbird24 · 13/01/2021 09:47

@IVFat43 I thought it might be from what you wrote! I didn’t do genetic testing, but they did offer it after my fresh transfer ended in a MMC. It would have meant defrosting them all, testing and then refreshing though, so I figured I might as well have another go first. Because I had a MMC from my only natural pregnancy as well my dr agreed to run all the blood tests to check if there was anything going on with me, but they all came back fine so it was definitely the embryos. If it happens again I’ll maybe have a rethink. The alternative was to do a whole new ivf cycle and do genetic testing before freezing.

Sunbird24 · 13/01/2021 09:47

Refreezing not refreshing, stupid autocarrot

IVFat43 · 13/01/2021 10:00

Sunbird24 I do hope you didn’t find my post offensive, it’s just that my age is a worry and not that I find comfort in any other struggling with fertility it’s just the one other person on here that seems to be my age going through the same thing.. and I totally relate to some of your previous comments, but by the sounds of it you’re far more experienced with this treatment and understand the process a lot better than me.. I’m totally new to all this.. I think I’ll be reviewing all options as we go along as best as I can.. it’s a mind field of what to do for the best by the sounds of it.. thank you 😊

Sunbird24 · 13/01/2021 10:09

@IVFat43 not at all, don’t worry! I went through my IVF in Sep/Oct - I don’t actually know if I have fertility issues as I’m doing this solo, I’m really bad/unlucky with relationships! 🤭🤣

Mancbear88 · 13/01/2021 10:24

@MF1981 @kikisparks I didn’t even know there was other options, my clinic tend to tell me what to do, this was the only option I was given.
Although to be fair I never ovulate and so there no point in a natural cycle or one that turns any hormones off.
It’s annoying how long it takes but at least it’s their most successful option!

Gardenlady543 · 13/01/2021 10:56

I am now finally on day 1 of medicated FET without down regulation having woken up to my period, to be honest I think it’s better when it comes as I can start looking ahead, rather than being in that uncertain stage.

I’ll be taking oestradiol three times a day and have my first scan a week on Friday with a plan to transfer between day 17-20 so towards the end of January.

IVFat43 · 13/01/2021 11:37

Sunbird24 Well done you! My friend enquired about doing it solo but never did it, it’s a brave thing and I admire you actually doing it. The scans, bloods and medical history will have provided a brief fertility profile, we had an ectopic 5 yrs ago and I lost a tube and suffer PCOS so I kind of know our reasons.. but it is hard to detect for sure.. I just hope if we are lucky enough to get to transfer it sticks after all this expense.. 🤞

Sunbird24 · 13/01/2021 12:08

@IVFat43 fingers and everything else crossed for all of us on this thread!
You’d think someone might have worked out how to create and attach a replacement tube by now wouldn’t you?

IVFat43 · 13/01/2021 13:50

Sunbird24 yes very true 😂
