Firstly apologies if this already exists. I had a look and couldn't find anything.

I've name changed as I feel like I have maybe been found out under my usual username, or maybe it's the paranoia settling in!

I'm late 20s, TTC 1 year.

I have been driving myself insane: stopped drinking alcohol, started eating dairy and fish was a hardened vegan for 10 years, stopped drinking caffeine, tried Brazil nuts, fertility smoothies and pineapple cores.

Nothing worked because it turns out that DP is effectively infertile, possibly due to a historical varicocele. We thought that may have been a factor but GP waved us away with "not necessarily - and anyway, you haven't been trying that long!" So we got a private sperm analysis and the results were Not Good.

However, DP got a (relatively) speedy referral to a urologist and after a few back and forths has had surgery on the affected vein. He's recovering, but we won't see "results" for at least 3 months as obviously sperm take 70 days to produce, although the testosterone production is supposed to be fixed/affected almost immediately.

Even then, research shows that only 30-50% of men with successful surgeries went on to conceive in the 12 months following the op, so my hours are not high. I mostly just feel that I will never be pregnant or have a baby, I'm convinced that next we'll find out that something is horribly wrong with me.

DP is being great. He says that we can look at donor sperm if this doesn't work, he wouldn't deny me the opportunity to be a mother. This just makes me cry, I have been very weepy the last few months.

Anyway, I thought it would be good to speak to others also affected by MFI as I feel very lonely and isolated as no one in real life knows that we are TTC, never mind that we're having issues.

Hi all, I was @Steenac72 on this thread. Congrats @Embri and @ProbablyPertunia on your babies.

Unfortunately we have now done 6 rounds of IVF and no pregnancy. I respond badly to the meds so we get very few eggs and with the male issues fewer embryos. We have 4 frozen embryos but did a test of uterus and lining which showed I have 0% good bacteria, low progesterone and high % bad bacteria and high levels of natural killers cells which means chances of sustaining a pregnancy in that current environment are nil. Shows why we’ve never been caught lucky before with both the sperm issues and now turning out that I’ve tons of issues too.

Alwayswithhope2 · 25/06/2021 16:20

@TheBeesKnee have you both been referred to fertility clinic? You should get treatment on NHS with the years you’ve been trying? I understand how you feel. We are over 4 years of trying now, so much injections meds and operations and still no baby or even pregnancy. All my friends are on number 2-3 and I have 3 friends who needed IVF and it worked first time for them all so I’m really on my own now. So I’m now jealous of people who are infertile but IVF works easily 🙈

Sending everyone struggling support. Flowers

@Alwayswithhope2 I'm so sorry you've had to go through so many unsuccessful rounds of IVF! What are your plans going forward?

@TheBeesKnee that's amazing though that his numbers doubled!

Embri · 25/06/2021 19:06

@TheBeesKnee @Alwayswithhope2
Thanks! Things are good over here, I have a 7 month old little girl. We were so so lucky that our first cycle worked. I will say a little thank you to the scientists who created ICSI until the day I die.

Sorry to hear neither of you have had the same luck 😔
I hope that you get your babies soon xx

PossiblyPertunia · 26/06/2021 20:42

Oh @Embri I'm so thrilled for you :)

TheBeesKnee · 19/10/2021 14:31

Hellooooooooo again!

There have been some developments: DP has recently had another embolization! He was one of the 10% of people who develop a new varicocele off a small side vein Envy the original coil had not budged, which is good, especially considering how active he is.

Unfortunately he did get a hefty dose of radiation during the procedure, but we'll be in the clear to start trying from January 2022. In the meantime we'll both be cutting out alcohol, caffeine, and improving our diets in preparation!

How has everyone else been faring?

OP posts:
PossiblyPertunia · 24/10/2021 21:05

@TheBeesKnee oh wow I didn't realise they could get another one! Also I had no idea about any radiation from the procedure?! I really hope this second op is the answer for you!

We've unfortunately had 3 consecutive miscarriages since June. Going through investigations now but everything seems to be fine so not sure why we can't get a pregnancy to stick.
We're thinking of maybe doing a private sperm analysis to check for DNA fragmentation but that's expensive as not covered by NHS.

TheBeesKnee · 25/10/2021 22:02

PossiblyPertunia

Apparently only 10% of people develop a side varicocele, he's lucky in all the wrong ways Grin

The radiation was from a fluoroscopy scan, they injected him with contrast to check the there were no other veins that were missed. Luckily it was all clear. I don't know if they usually use contrast, they didn't last time.

I'm so sorry to hear about your miscarriages Flowers I think a private analysis is definitely worth it if you can find the money.

@TheBeesKnee how are you getting on? Has your DH had a follow up SA?
We had another early miscarriage in December but I've been prescribed a few things to try if we get pregnant again and my DH is now taking Proxeed Plus.

Hello! I started a new thread but no one replied ☠️

DP had an appointment with the urologist in January. He gave us the go ahead to start TTC again but advised against rushing into a SA as he expects the numbers to increase as more time goes by since the op and doesn't want us to waste money. HOWEVER, I did buy a microscope and an at home preview found that there were a lot more sperm present than before the operation, although nowhere near "normal" levels according to Google and YouTube.

So sorry to hear about your miscarriage. What are you taking? And how long has DP been taking Proxeed?

OP posts:
PossiblyPertunia · 27/01/2022 15:49

Oh that does make sense not to rush in to an SA @TheBeesKnee
Was his last sample the one in June when it was 2mil? My husbands was 800k prior to the embolisation if I remember rightly.
I would like to do a follow up SA just to know what his levels are like now but lots of the clinics in London aren't doing them currently and I'm not sure how it would help us at all.
I've been given progesterone suppositories, aspirin and a blood thinning injection to try next time we get a positive. I testing positive for a mild blood clotting disorder which they combo is meant to help. I still think though that we're more like to have a chromosomal issue due to poor quality eggs or sperm (or both)!

TheBeesKnee · 28/01/2022 20:52

PossiblyPertunia

Ooh I think it must have been. Annoyingly, the urologist said that the increase was not significant, even though it was technically doubling from 1m!

The urologist also sent a letter saying that there's nothing more that they can do and if we've still not conceived in 6-12 months then we might want to consider IVF. So I'm going to give it until June then get the ball rolling, I think we can use his letter to get a proper referral going. At this point it has been 3 years and 4 months of TTC. I'm turning 30 this year and a few people have made comments about that Hmm

I'm sorry about your clotting disorder, have you always known about it or is it a recent discovery?

PossiblyPertunia · 29/01/2022 12:36

@TheBeesKnee

Had no idea about it until we started testing for recurrent miscarriages!

Gosh 3 years and 4 months is a long old slog isn't it! You've done so amazingly to get through it all. I was 30 when we had my son and will be likely 33 when we have another.

I've read so many positive stories about IVF with MFI as they pick the best sperm for each egg. I hope you don't need to go that route but if you do I am so sure it'll be a great outcome and you'll finally get your little one!

PossiblyPertunia · 30/08/2022 19:20

@TheBeesKnee how are you getting on?
We are now 21 weeks and things seem to be going well so far. I think the combo of meds plus my husband taking proxeed for 4 months are what made the difference but we will never know for sure!

Alwayswithhope22 · 30/08/2022 20:36

@PossiblyPertunia just got an email with your update. I am pleased to say I welcomed a little girl two months ago. Still can’t believe she is here. We took some months to sort all the issues I outlined above and the next transfer we did worked!

glad things are going well for you.

PossiblyPertunia · 30/08/2022 21:32

@Alwayswithhope22 oh that is just incredible news! So so pleased for you!

Ooooh congratulations! Do you know what you're having yet?

We have had DP on ZMA and coQ10. I think it's helping. We have a home microscope and saw a significant increase in activity. It was fascinating to watch 🤣

I am currently 9DPO and itching to test. Doing my best to hold out though, and as I am in the office tomorrow I think I can manage another couple of days. Unhelpfully, my boobs were sore today at the gym.

If this month is another fail, DP is going to get a private SA and go to the GP with the results and get the ball rolling for assisted conception.

Congratulations Alwayswithhope22 that's lovely to hear!

@TheBeesKnee we aren't finding out! All still feels a bit surreal, don't think I've accepted it's actually happening yet!

That's amazing there has been an improvement! I'll always keep everything crossed for you. If your DH does have another SA let us know how his numbers are looking!

TheBeesKnee · 02/09/2022 22:30

I am sharing your feelings of surreal disbelief @PossiblyPertunia because I tested yesterday and today (at 11 & 12 DPO) and got a BFP 🤯

I am trying not to get too excited yet, but I am also planning a mooch around the John Lewis baby section this weekend.

@TheBeesKnee ahhhhhh! Oh my god that is just the best news!! Is it your first ever BFP? A mooch around JL baby section sounds like the perfect plan!

It's my little boys 2nd birthday today. I've just reread this entire thread and I can't quite believe how far we've come!

Thank you so much 🥰 my second positive, I had a chemical back in 2020.

I have been testing every single morning 🙈 just look at how dark today's line is!!

I can't quite believe it's happening.

Happy belated birthday to him! It's crazy to think how much time has passed, and I'm really glad I started this thread all those years ago.

@TheBeesKnee wow that's an amazing line! How are you feeling now? Any symptoms yet?

I am 5+3 today and over the past 3 weeks I have had some cramps, bloating, my boobs have grown 2 cups so I went to buy a new bra today; I've been dealing with nausea almost every day, and I have thrown up once. I'm very sensitive to smells and become absolutely enraged about cleanliness 😅 I'm much more tired, and feel like I'm constantly peeing. I've been waking up at 6am or earlier, which is madness for a night owl like me.

So far all is well. I have self-referred to the maternity department but not heard back yet. I am hoping to have a private early scan at 8-9 weeks.

We haven't told anyone in real life yet and I am kind of loving this little secret bubble DP and I are living in 🥰 October is going to be tricky as there are 4 birthdays - dinner, parties, etc - and I'm not sure I can avoid them all!

OP posts:
PossiblyPertunia · 19/09/2022 18:14

So many symptoms that's amazing!

We didn't tell anyone this time until I was about 11 weeks and had had 3 scans. Still didn't believe it until then.

The nausea and sickness can be rough, I hope it doesn't get too bad for you!

Make sure you show us the scan when you have it. I'm now 24 weeks which is just crazy, having a 4D scan in 4 weeks, I always think it feels more real after that!
