Just seen a ticker on the BBC website saying that

all the reports i have seen and heard have said that the police who shot him were plain clothes officers...which makes sense if they were conducting a surveillance operation.

as someone else has pointed out, if i was being chased by a man/men in jeans and trainers waving guns at me in the stockwell area i would run for it.

i feel dreadfully sad for the man, his family, and the men who were afraid enough of what he might do to shoot him.

frightening times to live in: times which make extraordinary demands of the police. i for one hope-and feel i have the right to expect- that policemen armed with automatic weapons and empowered to 'shoot to kill' are extraordinary men acting with extraordinary care and restraint.

I was told earlier that permission has to be gained from the home secretary before police can be given automatice weapons to use - so did he give permission in the quest to search out the suicide bombers? Or is it another group all together.

The other thing I have kept on meaning to say on here but have kept forgetting is... When these extremists are caught they again try to take as many as possible with them as they kill themselves. That is what happened after the Madrid bombings. Just another reason why the police felt it necessary to shoot to kill.

Sorrry!

Flossam · 24/07/2005 00:30

I mean why the police might have felt it necessary

Janh · 24/07/2005 00:32

And you, Flossam

(Sorry for lowering the tone - I'm going to bed now!)

Flossam · 24/07/2005 00:33

Fran1 · 24/07/2005 00:41

Love to you too Janh!

MSN news says they have raided a house in Brixton late today - not sure of outcome.

jampots · 24/07/2005 00:45

what? no love for me ?

Fran1 · 24/07/2005 00:52

Of course you're loved jampots! it goes without saying - hence no need to mention your name

QueenOfQuotes · 24/07/2005 00:53

Something's just occured to me.........if the man was chased from the entrance to the station down to the trains.......surely if he HAD been a suicide bomber he'd have set it off as soon as the chase began????

OP posts:
Fran1 · 24/07/2005 00:55

How can anyone know what goes through their minds?

You could argue that he would have just stopped when told so and set it off.

QueenOfQuotes · 24/07/2005 01:01

I'm not being awkward at all - I just thought of this as I was making a hot chocolate. I've always understood it that a suicide bomber would rather kill himself, than be killed by the police (because then he's the martyr). It just seems like an awful long way to run with a bomb strapped to you if you knew you were going to die as a result of setting off your bomb anyhow why not just set it off before the police have any chance to catch you???

For those who want to criticise the police can I just repeat what other sensible people have posted on here, Please wait for the enquiry. IF you think , whilst perusing your morning newspaper, that you could have handled it better, faced with the few facts you have been given, PLEASE JOIN THE METROPOLITAN POLICE SERVICE, we obviously need people like you. As for those who think that training etc is all you need, well can I ask this, how many times in London have you experienced the fear and the pressure of such terror on the tubes and buses? How frequently do you think these incidents are going to occur? Cant answer? No, well the armed officers involved, for all their training, are just like me and you. This is a first. Do not underestimate the power or fear, adrenalin and the overwhelming desire and requirement to protect the greater public at large. Do NOT even begin to think about "trigger happy racist cops". None of you know the anguish involved in pulling that trigger. You do NOT know the facts and you were not that officer. I would like to see all those from the "this was a poor innocent man" camp, taking action, faced with HIS actions, having the knowledge that they had at the time, whether it was wrong or right. YES, someone has to take responsibility, but until facts are proven, DON't AUTOMATICALLY blame the police. Until the enquiry, blame COULD lie with the SECURITY FORCES or elsewhere.

QueenOfQuotes · 24/07/2005 01:11

"This is a first"

Yes it's the first person killed for being a 'suspected' suicide bomber, but it's by no means the first time the police have killed the wrong man/killed someone for the wrong reason.
