''but don't see why I should pay for them out of my taxes''
As a SAHM do you pay any taxes?

pooexplosions · 14/01/2010 20:42

Why do expect us to be tolerant of your intolerance? How bizarre, you beleive in freedom of expression, but only for people you approve of?
Anyone with half an ounce of sense should see that all children should be taught that homosexuality is normal because it is, as a matter of fact, normal, in that it is an established way of being that millions of people are. Whether you approve of it or not is neither here nor there, you can teach your children whatever you like in your own home.
Schools, funded by ALL taxpayers (cos you know the gays pay taxes too), should teach facts. And the fact is that a certain population of human people are gay, it has always been that way and always will be that way, and there is nothing you can do about that, other than judge quietly to yourself. If you choose to be a narrow minded bigot.

And no I don't think its trite to ask you why if your god thinks homosexuality is unnatural, why it was created? I don't believe in a deistic creator god so theres no dichotomy for me, but don't catholics beleive that god created everything? And man was designed in His own image? So homosexuals are also made in gods image, created by god, and celebrated in gods faith? Plus all that love your neighbour stuff doesn't say anything about "apart from the gay ones" does it?
I don't think you can really square homophobia with proper Christian or Catholic belief.

daftpunk · 14/01/2010 20:44

Aitch...I'm ok...honestly..

Mollyroger....My dh pays taxes...that's what I meant.

MIFLAW, faith schools used to be independent until the 1944 Education Act, so to be fair, it's not about rich organisations poncing off the state when they could just be independent. They can't unless the Govt decides they can.

LurcioLovesFrankie · 14/01/2010 20:47

Daftpunk - you've got me worried. What if children are as impressionable as you suggest? In his first year, DS attended 2 straight weddings (1 church, 1 civil), 2 civil patnerships and an ordination. Tell me honestly, have I corrupted him for life by this early exposure to alternative lifestyles? Will he grow up to become a conservative evangelical clergyman?

whydobirdssuddenlyappear · 14/01/2010 20:48

"I don't think you can really square homophobia with proper Christian or Catholic belief".
No. You can't.

pofarced · 14/01/2010 20:54

ok let me just state the obvious here and say the bible evidence supporting homophobia is pathetically scant. There is NOTHING in the New Testament criticizing homosexuality and the only thing in the Old Testament also in the same paragraph criticizes eating shellfish and anything with hooves. The other reference is criticizing promiscuity, both homosexual and heterosexual. So the bigotry in the Catholic and Anglican doctrine stems purely from bigots and not from the bible and certainly not from Christ. So dp, this really is a completely pointless argument.

ItsGrimUpNorth · 14/01/2010 20:55

"As a SAHM do you pay any taxes?"

As a family, we pay a lot of tax thanks.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 14/01/2010 20:56

well what's this about, then? you KNOW that a post like this is going to hurt people. we might not all be gay on here (although some of us are) but our sisters and brothers are, and our friends and our colleagues. there were other ways to bring this up, always assuming you had to in the first place. i don't get it.

i'm a catholic, my mum is stauncher than most, but she has got her head round the fact that her beloved pope is just plain wrong on this one. even the way you were saying 'their marches' or whatever it was you said, it's just so fucked-up. we're us, we're them, they're us... gosh this is upsetting.

whydobirdssuddenlyappear · 14/01/2010 21:00

DP - if you are that concerned about where your money goes, save it for the duck houses, the clock towers etc, not the teaching of tolerance which, if done sensitively, doesn't have to either conflict with the ethos of a faith school or marginalise groups within society. Who wouldn't need marches if they weren't marginalised.

stripeywoollenhat · 14/01/2010 21:21

may i just say, as a filthy homosexual, i am untroubled by daftpunk's bigotry? she's quite upfront with it, i'm confident she's wrong, she has no power to influence the course of my life, or anybody else's apart from those of her children, who will no doubt just wind up feeling embarrassed about her views and asking her to keep them to herself... so no need to ban on my account.

(the pope, on the other hand, does influence the course of people's lives, so it should be pointed out regularly that he was the man who worked so assiduously to cover up the widescale abuse of children by his organisation during the last century, and his moral authority should be considered in this light. i think he should be banned from mumsnet... )

TheFallenMadonna · 14/01/2010 21:36

Nasty.
Nasty, unnecessary, and very unkind.

I hope you'll be confessing soon.

GrimmaTheNome · 14/01/2010 21:36

I don't think we'll ask him to do a webchat either.

did someone say that 10% of the population was gay. I thought it was more. didn't someone establish, in the discussion between the choice of words, between natural and normal, that 'normal', thus is not the right word.

Given the choice, I don't think I would want my ds's to be gay. i am not that bothered, but prob, given the choice.
I think life is prob a bit easier if you are non-descript, middle of the road, same as everyone, etc etc.

pofarced · 14/01/2010 21:50

You must be very bored dp.

Then you must be pleased your dss aren't red- haired Oblomov. Or left-handed.

onagar · 14/01/2010 21:51

Normal is an often misused word I think. I suppose anything that is in the minority is not 'normal' in one sense, but that includes being a chess player or a catholic so it is twisting it when people try that.

It is normal (in the more everyday usage)for the human race to include (in no particular order) heterosexuals, red heads, tall people, left handed people, gay people, geniuses and idiots.

Wastwinsetandpearls · 14/01/2010 21:53

Have not read all the thread as I am busy but it makes me so angry whe datfpunk sees herself fit to speak on behalf of all Catholics.

I am a strict Roman Catholic ( althougb I di have issues with my church). I keep to many of the church teachings, so I only got divorced because my husband was divorcing me, have never remarried, don't use contraception, I am quite certain I would not have an abortion etc. But I see my faith as my discipline not an excuse to hate people and encourage prejudice.

I would not want my dd being told that being homosexual is abnormal.

onagar · 14/01/2010 21:54

Oh I think Oblomov has a point about it being easier not to be gay. It shouldn't be that way, but even nowadays I reckon most gay people will have had to put up with some crap.

GrimmaTheNome · 14/01/2010 21:55

Well said twinset! (dunno about the 'was', you clearly still are...have you been away?)

Oblomov · 14/01/2010 22:00

pofarced. ds2 is redheaded. a total ginge. I didn't really want him to be, but he is, hey ho. and i think he may be left handed aswell.
so thats me scuppered.

UnquietDad · 14/01/2010 22:04

I'm not going to read all of this (sorry) but I love the delicious irony of a Church of England spokesman saying "the notion people should be forced to teach as fact what are arguably matters of belief is disturbing."

arf arf

You give it up first, guv...
