making a bit of a habit of defending Daft Punk aren't you Harpy?
Live and let live is a nice idea and all, but some people believe in social responsibility and standing up to offensive bigotry. You may think its fine for people to state their racist and homophobic stance as its all a matter of opinion, but one could argue that is taking moral relativism to an extreme. Not all opinions are equal and not all beliefs are allowable once they have left your head and turn into speech. There are laws and rules and no such thing as free speech.

GrimmaTheNome · 14/01/2010 22:26

I think some comments overstep the mark, like the two unfortunately snide SAHM/tax queries when obviously DP just meant her household and frankly it'd be none of our business if she's got a pile of taxable savings. That sort of thing annoys me - its personal and irrelevant.

2snowshoes · 14/01/2010 22:30

oh dear more attention seeking

stripeywoollenhat · 14/01/2010 22:32

but poo (may i call you poo?), she isn't inciting a mob or anything, is she? not all opinions are equal, it's true, but it's also surely socially irresponsible to suppress expression which falls short of incitement to hatred? in a society which makes some attempt to be free, i mean. daftpunk has an opinion which has been roundly repudiated, as you would expect (she may be a masochist as well as a bigot, what do you think? oi, daftpunk, are you a masochist, then?) - no actual harm has been done here

morningpaper · 14/01/2010 22:42

start talking about "us" and "them" and you may as well incite a mob, frankly

Wastwinsetandpearls · 14/01/2010 22:47

I have no real issue with daftpunk deciding to hate, sneer at, feel uncomfortable around homosexual people. That is her choice and she is free to make it.

I have a problem with Daftpunk claiming to speak for my church. She can speak for part of my church, I don't doubt, but not all.

I also have an issue with her wanting a school, funded by the public purse, to teach that homosexuality as wrong, abnormal or icky.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 14/01/2010 22:49

well from my perspective it's upsetting because of the us and them thing, but principally because i LIKE dp very much but her behaviour recently has pretty much been nasty, attention-seeking trolling. she says she's fine, so that only leaves me thinking that i have her pegged completely wrong.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 14/01/2010 22:51

plus this isn't really one for gay members of mn to pronounce on, any more than dp is representative of all catholics.
when you start slagging off members of my family i'm always going to take that harder than if you slag me off.

Unfortunately, twinset, you don't need DP to speak for your church on homosexuality when you've got JR doing it to the world - as quoted/linked earlier.

onagar · 14/01/2010 22:56

The bible defaults to being a yarn until someone comes up with any reason to suppose otherwise and the existence of God/Allah/Hanuman is therefore on a par with the existence of the tooth fairy.

Feel free to consult the Racial and Religious Hatred Act and see if it requires people to believe in Christianity as if it does you will have to arrest lots of Hindus Muslims etc. As well as arresting Christians for not believing in Allah of course.

I don't shout that at people in the street (unlike some religious people) but make no secret of my position when it comes up.

morningpaper · 14/01/2010 23:01

feck off, boys

Wastwinsetandpearls · 14/01/2010 23:05

I am religious but am not offended by making a comparison between the tooth fairy and God, infact I did just that in a Philosophy lesson the other day.

Grimma I have issues with my faith. In my eyes the "sin is to do with having sex that cannot produce children. That is a sin I also commit and the reason I am not in full communion with the church. Let he with no sin cast the first stone....

stripeywoollenhat · 14/01/2010 23:06

aitch, i shouldn't post on this because i'm gay...?!

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 14/01/2010 23:11

lol, no you eejit, you shouldn't pronounce on it as unimportant just because it doesn't bother you personally. unless there's been a big gay election i'm unaware of.

clearly dp's recent trolling behaviour on here is causing some consternation.

yes but this isn't diversity or debate. dp saw the news story, rubbed her hands together and thought 'i'll wind mn up with that tonight'. she knows that this is a hostile audience for homophobia.

the only debate seems to be whether it bothers people or not.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 14/01/2010 23:16

(tbh it's one of the reasons i didn't bother reading for the first 250 or so posts, it's so clearly trolling).

Oblomov · 14/01/2010 23:17

i don't understand the calls to ban DP. Under what criteria ?

stripeywoollenhat · 14/01/2010 23:20

gosh, i wonder if anybody would vote for me... seriously, i never speak for the community (it's a sexual preference, not a political party) - and i'm not saying it's unimportant, actually i think it's pretty insidious, that whole 'my poor wealthy, influential institution, being picked on by the nasty liberals and gays' argument. i just think that in the context of mumsnet, it's pretty harmless, unless she has an especially persuasive posting style that has completely passed me by... i'm also of the opinion that people shouldn't be banned unless they are being exceedingly abusive

pithyslicker · 14/01/2010 23:29

I'm not bothered if someone is homosexual, I think most organised religions are pretty rubbish, but I have no issue if people want to peacefully worship.

But I do believe in free-speech.

'I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.'
Evelyn Beatrice Hall. (often misattributed to Voltaire)

I can't quite understand the (sometimes)almost hysterical reaction to DP.

It is just her view. One person.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 14/01/2010 23:41

hmm i don't know so much about the banning, but i can see the argument being made that UCM was banned for being islamophobic. and persistent trolling is another bannable offence, so you could argue on that basis also i think.

much as i personally would be sad to see her go, i should say. but this is a shitty line, guaranteed to cause hurt and offence to MNers as have others of hers been recently.

daftpunk · 15/01/2010 00:06

hi aitch, thought I'd get this in before I'm banned.
You are being totally unfair and I'm actually shocked at what you're saying about me. I linked this news item because it's relevant to me and probably quite a few other parents. This is a site for all parents, it's not a homosexual forum. You said I posted it to cause offence, that's bollocks and you know it. Did the poster who started the thread about the pope start that to offend all Catholics..?
MN is a puplic forum, it is open to all, if mnhq only want liberal lefties on here, or anyone who isn't religious then they have to change their membership rules.
I know you're sticking by morningpaper, I understand that, but you're hitting me too hard.

dp think for a minute;
heaps of folk post that they are upset/offended by the things that you put on MN

do you like upsetting people, what do you get from the constant negative feedbackyou receive?

Is it the attention ?

I am genuinely curious as to why you cannot curb your fuckit goblin fingers and join in with more mainstream topics on MN

I never see you posting on Style and Beauty, or contributing to Castles of North Wales or poking fun at Dotty Fox from Lapland UK

You don't contribute much to MN apart from homphobic racism

Why are you here at all?
