Why can't people just leave us alone

And you'd know this how, Tapas? Psychic?

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 18/01/2010 17:00

tapas you are praising DP for her non-WishyWashy religious views and her ability to stand by the bible no matter what, whilst condemning others for not following the bible to the letter. But DP herself admits she is just as WishyWashy when it comes to other aspects of the bible.

Are you only praising her because this particular belief falls in line with your own? I cannot see any other motivation for praising DP in this instance.

Arguing that religion is contradictory and illogical is not making a groundbreaking statement.

You seem to be on here to condemn all religion, not to discuss the point at hand.

Can't help thinking that if you send your child to a faith school, they are going to be taught lots of things that are utter bunk religious in base, including,

  • position of men in relation to men (did anyone say separate but equal, hahaha, or how about just having different rigid roles in life). Back in that kitchen, you, and stop it with those opinions!
  • there are some racist elements in the bible too, cane and abel etc
  • and yes homophobia traditional views on homosexuality.
  • creationism. Oh don't get me started.
  • traditional views on relationships, sex before marriage, etc.

It seems to me that you can't just single out one thing. Surely parents that want their children to have an education in a faith school, should have just that.

Faith schools should stick to their guns, it will show them up for what they are!

Peachy · 18/01/2010 17:00

Tapas I know the history of the Bible, I have a degree in world faiths.

I chose it becuase Jesus is who I beleive in, you don't choose beleif, it is just there. Whilst I believe Mohammad,Guru Gobind, etc were goodpeople, I don't beleive they were the chosen ones.

I do believe that I have no right to dictate to others what to believe though, and that has toreach to sexuality surely?

Also, the Jesus commandment is a part of Christianity- hoew much emphasis one aplces on it is a matter of faith, it is nevertheless there.

AS for ditching things- Jesus ate with gentiles and had them as Apostles, tiny now but huge in his era.

Nemofish, most faith schools in the country are CofE schools that do not promote an anti-homosexuality agenda at all. People just think we do.

Nemofish · 18/01/2010 17:01

sorry that should be position of women in relation to men

lol apt in the circumstances...

pooexplosions · 18/01/2010 17:01

Perhaps if you read th entire thread you would see some of them above.
I have diplomas in Religious Philosophy, Christian Theology and comparative religion. Your knowledge seems a little sketchy though....

Peachy · 18/01/2010 17:03

Oh and Nemo I would actually agree with you,if somanya reas such as the village where I live didn't only have a faith school to serve them.

I am not anti faith school, but I beleive strongly that there should always be alternative, local provision in place first.

amberlight · 18/01/2010 17:06

Over the last ten years I have advised the CofE, Quakers, Roman Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians, Jewish Faith, Muslims, Hindus, Jain, Bahai, Buddhists...in other words the lot. And I write and speak on the subject of multifaith social responsibility issues. Just so you know.

Peachy · 18/01/2010 17:06

Actually no,scratch that- whilst I agree with faith schools in principle if alternatives are provided (and I dont mean out of catchment alternatives or anything like that), I don't for one second think that nastiness such as homophobia should be perpetuated in any school.

Oh and Tapas in case you don't know me, I will apologise for typing and spelling now- I have marked eyesight probloems, and whilst I can spell my typing is poor and I cannot proof read.

Ditto that from Christinaity also Ric, wrt to tolerance, judging etc.

Tapas if you really want to understand a broader take on it, and if you ahevn't encountered him, you might want to read the works of Vivekananda: he was a HIndu but one of the great pioneers of multifaith dialogue and I think one of the great writers and thinkers of all time on general faith.

Must admit I was thinking of catholic schools rather then C of E amberlight.

pofarced · 18/01/2010 17:25

Tapas I'm sorry if I've offended you somehow but I really don't think asking you to read the thread warrants being told to piss off. I was a bit exasperated that the thread was getting circular, as often happens in these threads, and there have been quite a lot of information in this thread about the tricky task of gleaning what the scriptures actually mean in cultural and historical context, and the problems of multiple translations.
