"on mumsnet this week" in the Mail. Is this a new thing

jujumaman · 13/08/2009 10:32

Came across this this morning when I should have been working

Is this a new weekly rip-off by the Mail? Or has it been going on for months and I'm behind the times as usual

I'm not quite as virulently anti the Mail as mnetters, find it silly rather than the end of civilisation as we know it. But still ...

Good night MP.

giraffesCanRunA10k · 13/08/2009 23:20

Thunderduck just read this - beenthinking of you last few days and meant to message you re cousins baby - do you accept CAT? I was so excitd when I read that I though you were pg. Im fucking raging. What a piece of shit. What next...my daughter said her first words or something? Honestly I feel a bit wierd about it. Having a shitey few days anyway - and then today SANDS closed and now here is being a pain...aaaargh where the hell am I meant to vent now??!!

Nancy66 · 13/08/2009 23:21

Why don't you wait and see if any of you are traced, tracked down, hunted, stalked or murdered - rather than just wildy assuming you will be?

K999 · 13/08/2009 23:22

Nancy- I dont fancy waiting to be murdered thanks very much...

JustineMumsnet · 13/08/2009 23:22

We copied our copyright notice off someone else eons ago iirr - possibly Gina Ford - so not sure how efficacious it is tbh and as I've said we're in the process of changing it to sound far less stringent - Gerry's got the new stuff up her sleeve but she's on hols right now - but you're right it is a bit nonsensical because my understanding that it's not really a tenable position wrt to fair use, but as said, I'll check.

i think that's pretty unfair, tbh nancy. there is some sort of principle at stake i think.

scottishmummy · 13/08/2009 23:24

i will type slowly so you can catch up MP.as Justine et al said nothing on MN is private

the responsibility for the content of individual posts lies with that individual

anyone can reproduce MN.so bit of internet savvy needed.weirdos and stalkers aplenty out there

no no one asks to be stalked, but common sense boundaries can help

we spend so long as adults educating our children about internet and disclosure, we too should abide to good practice

Nancy66 · 13/08/2009 23:24

I accept the principle Aitch - I don't accept the nightmarish fallout that everyone is predicting.

Thunderduck · 13/08/2009 23:26

I'm sorry you're having a bad time Giraffes.

I don't have CAT but I don't mind sharing my e-mail address here as I have others that I can use if need be.

If you ever need to vent/rant feel free to e-mail me at [email protected].

I hope things improve for you.

AitchTwoOh · 13/08/2009 23:26

me neither, as it happens, but i do think that it's astonishingly bad practice and has the potential to damage small lives in big ways. but that's what teh papers do every day, tbh.

IOnlyReadtheDailyMailinCafes · 13/08/2009 23:26

Why don't you wait and see if any of you are traced, tracked down, hunted, stalked or murdered - rather than just wildy assuming you will be?

But people have been, I am not aware of any murders but have seen people be tracked/ stalked on mumsnet.

FluffySaysTheDailyMailsCrap · 13/08/2009 23:27

So you lifted the copyright notice from someone else Justine!!

Sorry. I've done some at Uni, not insured though but can give you a hand if you need it.

Here, have a brandy dear. I'll make it a double for you.

K999 · 13/08/2009 23:27

MP may well stick her norks in her tea but I am sure she is more than capable of keeping up!!

differentID · 13/08/2009 23:27

Just ONE incident of fallout is one too many. The possibility should be minimised by the Mail not doing a bloody column based on our lives.

Nancy66 · 13/08/2009 23:27

Yup...you should see what I'm writing right now (evil cackle)

pointydog · 13/08/2009 23:30

Her real name in nancy666

Nancy66 · 13/08/2009 23:30

Yes, people have been tracked down on MUMSNET. Which shows the risk is already there because they've been careless with the information they post.

The incidents you mention have nothing to do with the DM column I assume?

oopsagain · 13/08/2009 23:31

i don't expect to be stalked or murdered tbh...

I suppose i thought what was written on MN stayed on MN unless there was a specific request.

But that may well be niave of me and I may have misunderstood.
I know anyone can read it- but there is an audience that usually has children and can actually acess the internet- so some of my posts were failry hidden IYSWIM.

Posting them inot an article in a national newspaper changes the impied audience and opens it all up massivey.
And i didn't/don't choose to post in that audience.

So it's not that i am worried about the practicalities- but I do feel that the nature of the way Mn works has changed forever and it saddens me and i am a bit too that it was thoguht to be ok...

BitOfFun · 13/08/2009 23:31

Well it's my birthday in 30 minutes, and as I missed Chistmas for Moldiegate, I'm going to steer clear of Mailgate from now on

Night all!

TheWiltedRose · 13/08/2009 23:33

Happy birthday for 30 mins BOF!

Nancy66 · 13/08/2009 23:34

Yes, HB BOF.

Thunderduck · 13/08/2009 23:35

Good night BOF and Happy Birthday.

Quattrocento · 13/08/2009 23:36

It's a bit odd and sad that someone lifts threads to make a column. Shows a startling lack of originality IMO. Sorry to all those who may be outed or caused any problems through this regrettable development.

scottishmummy · 13/08/2009 23:36

scams, stalking, pram huns all other MN not DM. MN too has had some ole ravers
