"on mumsnet this week" in the Mail. Is this a new thing

1009 replies

jujumaman · 13/08/2009 10:32

Came across this this morning when I should have been working

Is this a new weekly rip-off by the Mail? Or has it been going on for months and I'm behind the times as usual

I'm not quite as virulently anti the Mail as mnetters, find it silly rather than the end of civilisation as we know it. But still ...

gonna think twice about what i put on the bumsex threads from now on thats for sure!

AtheneNoctua · 13/08/2009 12:14

Perhaps e should start advertising MN in the FT and the Wall Street Journal.

Calm down dear!

The DM is linked to daily on here- some of us must read it, and we aren't a bastion of bigotry yet. Let's not get hysterical about what is basically a bit of a free plug.

BitOfFun · 13/08/2009 12:15

Athene, I reckon we could ask Marxism Today to link to us too, that should keep us right...

AtheneNoctua · 13/08/2009 12:16

Really??? Can I have a link please to info/T&Cs that say MN is responsible for what I type.

I think Sarah Palin (and a lot of other people) could sue MN for slander if this is true.

vonsudenfed · 13/08/2009 12:16

Ah, I just reported my own post to get a response and then there is one.

FWIW, I think this is a Really Bad Idea. I don't think there's much common ground between MN and the DM's incessant and insidious misogyny, and I don't like the link at all.

Why make a link - from which you get no financial benefit - with people who are stealing your copyrighted material to fill their unpleasant paper, and who - judging by the links - are not held in much regard by most of your members.

It's a bit like the Baby Fair. There's getting the word out, and then there's being associated with undesirables - not good for the MN brand. Especially for free.

Poor judgement call if you ask me.

The day I see a Friday bumsex feature in the Mail, I might just buy it

AtheneNoctua · 13/08/2009 12:17

Marxism Today??? Oh God... please no. I prefer the DM I think.

JustineMumsnet · 13/08/2009 12:18

Mumsnet isn't an exclusive club though - we're not really here for like-minded people only. Though obviously we hope that through a process of discussion that unreasonable views and positions will prove untenble.

This is not an "official partnership" because we've not been involved or consulted in the process of it appearing at any point but on balance are we unhappy about it, no because as others have quite rightly said, everything that's on here is in the public domain anyway.

GivePeasAChance · 13/08/2009 12:19

How ironic that the Daily Mail is Mumsnet's Number 1 fan.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2009 12:20

Another thought we've had. Many of us post in chat because we know our posts will expire in there. But I doubt they will expire from the DM archives.

JustineMumsnet · 13/08/2009 12:20

By the way the Daily Mail is the most visited media site from Mumsnet - but I suspect there's a lot of folks going off to look at something that's caused outrage involved.

RustyBear · 13/08/2009 12:21

It is pretty careless not getting the name of the OP right though... She should know better!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/08/2009 12:21

'we've had' (frets that I might be developing a split personality) I meant 'I've had'!!

seriously, my above point does concern me.

Surely anyone who posts anything on here does so knowing their words are visible to the world.

vonsudenfed · 13/08/2009 12:23

I agree that MN isn't a liberal club; but I am surprised about the association with what I see as a very anti-women pov. It sits uncomfortably for me.

I'm surprised that you're so laid back about the copyright issue though, as it would make defending any other breach much harder (could I then write a book based on what is on MN and sell it? and if not, why not?)

I also think the privacy issue is quite a big one too - the story in this week is quite a rare and recognisable one too. And while it has been 'published' on here, it would be hard to Google and find it unless you were very lucky. But friends and colleagues are far more likely to stumble across it in the Mail.

MaggieBelleVirgo · 13/08/2009 12:24

It is a surprising link..... I wonder if it will attract a different kind of MNer, do they care?!

tbh, I wouldn't know where I fit in! so not judging! I'm not a two-home kinda gal with a cambridge education or a multimillionaire husband, but lately I have noticed threads about 'poor people' and slagging them off, bring back hanging....

groan. Mind you, as a genuinely poor person, I do sometimes buy the daily mail because it's cheap. It is possible to read that paper and be a liberal. It actually is, and I know that because I am.

Although I read and even buy the mail occasionally, I read about mumsnet for the first time in the Sunday Times magazine! Can I stay!?

LG: when does a strapline become a ticker....

Maybe we should have tickers after all then? Or signatures? I'm thinking

PerArdua thinks that cutting and pasting is the lowest form of journalism
poopscoop · 13/08/2009 12:25

We need to spend the entire week creating threads that slag off the daily mail or Bumsex. Then watch with interest as to what they put in their column
