"on mumsnet this week" in the Mail. Is this a new thing

Came across this this morning when I should have been working

Is this a new weekly rip-off by the Mail? Or has it been going on for months and I'm behind the times as usual

I'm not quite as virulently anti the Mail as mnetters, find it silly rather than the end of civilisation as we know it. But still ...

OP posts:

mollyroger · 13/08/2009 12:28

gonna change my name to ''quotethisyafuckers''

PerArduaThinksFucktheDM · 13/08/2009 12:28

Oh good one molly!

daftpunk · 13/08/2009 12:29

excellent...the more daily mail readers we have on here the better...even things out.

PerArduaThinksFucktheDM · 13/08/2009 12:30

DP - if it's likeminded people you're after why not just stick to the DM forums?

MaggieBelleVirgo · 13/08/2009 12:30

this from the girl who wants to bring back hanging! yikes!

so, who is the mumsnetter who's now in the evil paypocket of the dm?

BitOfFun · 13/08/2009 12:31

Look I disagree with Daftpunk on loads of things, but I think it's a bit poor that she gets squashed as if she's Attila The Hun every time she opens her gob. Give her a break PerArdua!

vonsudenfedhatespauldacre · 13/08/2009 12:32

will this do?

notwavingjustironing · 13/08/2009 12:32

I do think there is a big difference in the fact that even if you are on this website you actually have to do a physical search for something, whereas if there is a direct "quote" in the DM it makes people much more likely to be "outed" as it were.

Let's face it, they are unlikely to be interested in what everyone is having for dinner, and far more interested in some bizarre and unusual relationship problem aren't they? - Which in itself makes people more recognisable.

I get the bit that what we write is available to all - but there is a big difference in being interested enough to look for it, and being handed it on a plate via a link.

I'm not particularly controversial or indeed post anything of particular secrecy, but I do think that vulnerable people who post here as a last resort thinking that no-one in real life would find out, might be put off from asking for help.

not just for my sake perardua...for the good of mumsnet....daily mail readers are the voice of reason...

It would be interesting - and potentially reassuring - to get the journalist involved on here to discuss issues regarding privacy and so on. Any chance of that?

BitOfFun · 13/08/2009 12:36

Good idea Von.

UK Copyright service explains concept of 'fair use'. There is apparently no set amount you can quote - it says 'each case is viewed on its own merit'

I note that one of the requirements is to 'quote the name of the author', so perardua & molly may well be safe if they use those names...

notwavingjustironing · 13/08/2009 12:38

I just find it a bit odd that if the Mner involved in this is such a good egg and "gets" what we are all about, would surely realise that most people might have an opinion - and a lot would hate the idea.

Oh, and maybe have been asked in the first place if MN minded. If nothing else, it's a bit rude.

PerArduaThinksFucktheDM · 13/08/2009 12:38

bumsex - good name, horrible mental image...

bumsexscoopsyapoop · 13/08/2009 12:39

do you think they will have me in the DM next week?

vonsudenfedhatespauldacre · 13/08/2009 12:40

No, I agree, and I've made sure that I'm pretty unidentifiable via all my posts.

But if - as in this week's scenario - the situation is likely to be identifiable to friends and family, it's a very different issue. It would be almost impossible to discover this via Google, but very easy to find in the DM. That's the problem for me.

What happens if, for example, the OP's boss reads that in the DM. He then goes to MN and finds all her other posts, some, probably, complaining about them. He would not have found them without the article. And now imagine that scenario in a relationship query, or even domestic violence...

BitOfFun · 13/08/2009 12:41

Ooh, my google number one is a site "sharing humour, beauty and art"...I'm still under the radar then
