Margaret Thatcher to be given state funeral.

Is this true? because the Daily Mail reported it so obviously I need something more reliable than that

Last year Guardian reported 'there were no plans' for a state funeral.

Anyone heard this from anywhere other than the DM?

Cos she was the first female PM? Was she the longest serving PM until Blair?

Also wondering how representative this thread is - ie all wanting to dance on her grave? IL's northern family hate her (ex miners), my southern family love her as they did well in the 80s. Wondering what % of the public voted for her?

My immediate reaction was "is she dead?" too.

That's a no, then?

Oh well.

Heated - don't think the Tories ever got more than 50 per cent of the vote in GEs under her (and that's just the people who actually voted), so those who voted for her are going to come to considerably less than 50 per cent of the adult population.

I don't see why she qualifies though, unless all other PMs after Jim C will get a state send-off too?

I don't see why that is a good reason, swc.

PMs don't generally get state funerals, do they? WC was an honourable exception & deserved it for his wartime service & stonking oratorical contributions

Am a bit bemused that you feel the need to equate lefty with labour, yes traditionally it is the party of the left, that does not mean that left thinking would be voters would now vote for them.

Having said that, there isn't a cat in hells chance that I would ever think the Tory party would represent my views either.

I really really don't see why she should get one for being the 1st woman PM. (Why didn't Disraeli get one? Or Lloyd George?)
