Dispatches . Russel brand .

I actually like Russel brand . And I don't think he's ever hidden what he used to be in his heyday. He's always been very open about his drug use, and promiscuity.

I read his first book . I watch his videos on fb , and while I don't always agree with him, he seems to have totally overhauled his lifestyle, attitudes, is into yoga, self care, seems to be a decent husband and father .

Is this newsworthy ? Young famous comedian in heyday slept with lots and lots of women , consensually he says ?

Hes never hidden it.

On drug misuse I alWays had time for his views that it should be dealt with as a medical issue not a criminal one

What's the news story ?
I always feel like there is much glee and salivating before the media try and knock someone down.
I don't think this is a huw edwards where people would be shocked at him trying to pick up young women behind his wife's back

It seems that brand has settled down , lives a fairly mundane lifestyle and is happy with his choices .

Or am I completely missing something?

Well maybe watch what the programme has to show and see?

If there are allegations of rape and sexual abuse, I think the alleged victims have a right to be at least heard before anyone goes 'oh this old hat again yada yada'

fabmaccawhackythumbsaloft · 16/09/2023 16:31

Absolutely they do, but why is this just coming out now ? He has always been a promiscuous man as a single man , why wait until he has a wife and 2 kids ?

I don't feel comfortable with these media circuses of conviction without trial by TV.

If someone feels Russell Brand has committed a criminal offence against them, then they should be contacting the Police not a TV show.

I understood this country's legal system is innocent until proved guilty. I can't help thinking that this programme is not going to take a neutral stance.

I actually rather like Russell Brand. If he's committed crimes then obviously it needs investigation but Dispatches isn't who should be doing it. I also dislike the sensationalism. This really isn't the news of the year.

I'm absolutely with you on this

Trial by media . If he has committed CRIMINAL offences notify the police

Ffs.
Being promiscuous has no connection with being a rapist.

Such ignorance astounds me.

I think it’s a smoke screen of some bullshit politics he’s made no secret of the fact he is anti establishment has a big following through commune it’s a set up to detract from some political shit

Well similar was said about Jimmy Savile, about victims 'waiting' until he was dead.
Until it transpired that actually people HAD tried to report, and weren't listened to, because <shock horror> the establishment actually enabled him to keep abusing and for victims to be dismissed...

Cornettoninja · 16/09/2023 16:37

It’ll be clarified in the dispatches programme (personally I’ll probably wait for the inevitable slew of reports about it after). I’m holding judgement till then.

I do wonder if it’ll prompt Katy Perry to talk about whatever it was she said prompted the end of their marriage but she wouldn’t talk about.

fabmaccawhackythumbsaloft · 16/09/2023 16:37

It's the "all felt ready to speak after being approached by reporters"

Really ?

Fair point about the police.

However, how can you be minimising accusations of rape and coercive control? It doesn't matter whether you like him or not. To be so dismissive of rape is, quite frankly, disgraceful.

And there is no way that channel 4 and The Times would be running this unless they were VERY confident in the story's veracity.

FuckingHellAdele · 16/09/2023 16:40

You don't know that the police haven't been notified at any point.

And also, there is strength in numbers- if you believe you are one small female voice speaking out about a powerful male it can be easier to stay quiet. If you hear other voices speaking out about a powerful male, it becomes easier to add your noise.

The same media outlets crowned him "shagger of the year "

What an utter shit show .

@fabmaccawhackythumbsaloft Was it Channel 4 or the Sunday Times that crowned him shagger of the year or was it, in fact, an entirely different media outlet?

What a revolting thread.

Lelophants · 16/09/2023 16:45

Unfortunately I’ve heard rumours of this for years. No one likes to hear it about someone they like.

Doesn't that prove that people wouldn't believe a rape allegation and would inevitably say things like "she must have sex and regretted it" or "she's jealous that he didn't get in contact again" ? When footballers have accusations made against them there are always loud minority of people saying stuff like "she was a slag who threw herself to him"

MeToo has forced media to report public allegations. Before that, it was standard practice to publish kiss and tells. The media get their women in underwear pics using other angles but I understand why women feel more empowered when others also voice their experience.

Insommmmnia · 16/09/2023 16:48

Since when is the '00s a different time FFS

I'm not really interested in rape in the 60s or 70s being dismissed as it was a 'different time' but I was in my late teens early 20s in the '00s and fully understood consent and no meaning no thank you very much

Or maybe he's actually a rapist

Everything's not a conspiracy despite the slant he's trying to put on it
