Express reporting that working theory is that they were washed off the lower deck of the pier by wash from a jet ski

mynameisnotthis2 · 01/06/2023 12:27

I live in the south west and my first thought was of an incident which happened at durdle door a year or so ago, where young men were fatally injured/paralysed from jumping into the sea from a great height. Of course we don't know what's happened yet and I don't want to speculate at all, but in general I feel that there isn't enough understanding of the risks when swimming in the sea. It was a "oh no it's happened again" feeling, very sad.

LotsOfBalloons · 01/06/2023 12:28

Still TEN people injured. That's not just people jumping off is it?

FlipFlopShopInHawaii · 01/06/2023 12:31

RIP to those poor children who lost their lives.

Thoughts with their poor heartbroken families 💔💔

toomuchlaundry · 01/06/2023 12:34

Police are going to give a press conference shortly

Sugarfree23 · 01/06/2023 12:35

@LotsOfBalloons it's definitely more than just 10 people jumping in.

Thoughts with the families and prayers for the injured hope they make a full recovery.

TokyoSushi · 01/06/2023 12:52

Just watching the police briefing now, it still doesn't make much sense but seems to be indicating it's the wake from a boat or similar that caused it.

electricmoccasins · 01/06/2023 13:01

The two children were not related

neveradullmoment99 · 01/06/2023 13:02

IamThegreaterMole · 01/06/2023 02:33

It sounds like they were jumping off the pier, maybe there was an adult with them encouraging them to do it?

News says this. A man was encouraging them to jump off.

AmyFl · 01/06/2023 13:03

The police briefing specifically said that no-one was jumping off the pier.

AlanJohnsonsBeemer · 01/06/2023 13:03

The press conference said there was absolutely no suggestion anyone jumped off the pier and all 10 were already in the water

LotsOfBalloons · 01/06/2023 13:05

I'm so cross with the Daily Mail who led with the "jumping in " story. The others didn't say this (especially not local press as was pointed out earlier) but its how rumours spread. Particularly the mail saying "a source says x MAY have done y" which is just saying "I guess it could have been this." Is so bad taste when it's not known.

Still. Are daily mail known for factual reporting...?

LotsOfBalloons · 01/06/2023 13:06

Yes the press conference made clear the people were already in the water.

Billyho · 01/06/2023 13:07

neveradullmoment99 · 01/06/2023 13:02

News says this. A man was encouraging them to jump off.

What news says that then?

LindorDoubleChoc · 01/06/2023 13:08

dancinginthesky · 01/06/2023 08:54

We used to have lots of public safety films - why did they stop? Relying on the public and younger generations to just know some things doesn't seem wise to me.

I agree. It was my first thought after the young boys died falling through ice on a pond in Solihull in the winter. They were Government funded public information films and I really think we need them back. They could be shown on Tik Tok or SnapChat, no problem.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 01/06/2023 13:12

so what we do know now is that they were not jumping off the pier and got caught in a rip tide so can we stop with the children need to learn water safety about jumping in, it's inappropriate on a thread about dc who did not do that. These children died and not from their own actions from the sound of things so can the victim blaming about need to know better stop now please and lets focus on the poor children and their families.

LolaMoon · 01/06/2023 13:14

The telegraph says this:

With an investigation continuing at pace into the deaths, officers have revealed that they are working on the belief that there was no actual contact between “a vessel and any swimmers”.
The two children may have been overcome after being hit by the wash from a boat.

Sugarfree23 · 01/06/2023 13:17

Remember there are another 10 people injured. It does sound like a jetski or something has been far too close to swimmers. Deliberately.

watermeloncougar · 01/06/2023 13:20

The police briefing again mentioned the man who's been arrested was 'on the water' which presumably means some sort of involvement from a vessel

mynameisnotthis2 · 01/06/2023 13:30

After watching the press conference, I feel they are still trying to establish if someone was at fault or not for manslaughter, and once that has been decided I'm sure we will be told everything.
Thoughts are with the families.

Kidsandcat · 01/06/2023 13:30

So sad about this. Its so near me. RIP to the boy and girl, poor family and friends. Such horrible social media speculation. Daily mail seem to have made their story up.

Quveas · 01/06/2023 13:30

Does this site never learn?

Police: This is a tragedy which is being investigated, please have some respect for the families and the investigation and don't speculate
MumsNet posters: Nah it's our inalienable right to speculate and if the Daily Mail hasn't made enough stuff up we'll make it up ourselves.

BonesBrennanz · 01/06/2023 13:41

The lunchtime news specifically said no jet ski was involved. They say the group were swimming, not jumping from the pier.

LaSelkie · 01/06/2023 13:44

None of this makes any sense....it's totally incomprehensible

watermeloncougar · 01/06/2023 13:49

@LaSelkie it can make sense if you see it as the police ruling things out rather than explaining what happened. They have said the victims (the 8 injured as well as the 2 who died) were in the water, and had not jumped off the pier. They've said the man under arrest was on the water. They have said their was no physical contact with a vessel. They have said a jet ski wasn't involved.

I agree it all sounds odd, but the police are being careful to state what didn't happen rather than what may have happened
