May they rest in peace.

Sugarfree23 · 01/06/2023 18:07

The police have also given credit to the lifeguards, most of whom are teens themselves, there are being supported by RNLI
They must be traumatised too.

Dozens of witnesses I imagine; the sea and beach get pretty packed on sunny summer afternoons

Strangely on the radio earlier they said they had spoken to lots of people who were on the beach that afternoon but all reported witnessing the aftermath and not the actual incident.

Pacflan · 01/06/2023 18:10

Apparently they've impounded a pleasure boat, it would explain why theyve been careful not to say anything. It's really desperately sad all round, those poor children and their families. I live locally and I'll be honest a statement saying they don't believe there to be further danger to the public would be appreciated, but aside from that thoughts with the families and the emergency services and lifeguards- some of whom were likely teens themselves.

To be honest it's harder to notice stuff when the beach and the sea is crowded in my experience. I wasn't there yesterday but it gets so super busy and it's hard to find family and friends amongst the crowds let alone really note what happened. I expect some in the immediate area will probably know but have rightly been advised not to speak about it, but the amount of I saw x, y definitely happened I saw it is predictable but sad.

BonesBrennanz · 01/06/2023 18:16

I think they cleared the beach to allow the rescue so most will have been focussed on grabbing their stuff to clear the beach. Then you have the fact they were a little way out to sea. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is mostly those involved who actually know what happened. Even they may not have seen the cause.

For 10 swimmers to be hurt (albeit minor injuries for most) and need to be rescued it's hard to imagine how it could be anything else, given the man in custody was 'on the water.' The wake from a power boat could easily force people underwater or into the piles if they were near the pier. If it turns out it was a powerful vessel involved I hope they throw the bloody book at the driver.
Id like to see any sort of jet ski/ power boat restricted ideally to lakes where swimmers aren't allowed or to very separate demarcated areas if they're at the coast. The situation currently is a joke - regardless of this specific incident. I'm fed up of swimming in the sea when idiots on these machines don't understand the need to keep the fuck out of the way.

so jet skis are the MN cyclists of the sea?

BonesBrennanz · 01/06/2023 18:24

BBC news says police have ruled out speculation that they were struck by a vessel.

LizzieSiddal · 01/06/2023 18:30

Jet skis arent the problem. Idiotic drivers of them certainly are a huge issue on some beaches.

Should’ve said jet skiers obviously!

We don’t know that was the case on this beach yet though?

toomuchlaundry · 01/06/2023 18:39

I assume whatever caused the accident happened very quickly so people wouldn’t necessarily have seen it happen. But if it happened near to the pier, people may well have assumed it was due to people jumping in.

neveradullmoment99 · 01/06/2023 19:27

Billyho · 01/06/2023 13:07

What news says that then?

Im sure it was the daily mail. They usually have every single detail going. However, the story has now changed and there is even more detail about a boat that has been impounded.

neveradullmoment99 · 01/06/2023 19:29

Its not the same article but one previous to that said the man was encouraging the children to jump in. No idea if it is not true.

Bunnycat101 · 01/06/2023 19:31

From some of the reporting it doesn’t sound like there was great visibility of what was happening. There are some witness reports of people notifying the lifeguards once it became obvious there was a person washed ashore. It wouldn’t surprise me if there weren’t many witnesses to the events before evacuation given how silent drowning can be.

Jump in from where?

toomuchlaundry · 01/06/2023 19:52

@Billyho the pier. That story has obviously been discounted

Wintersgirl · 01/06/2023 20:06

It just doesn't make sense, the "Dorset Belle" a pleasure boat that operates from Bournemouth has been impounded and is under Police guard tonight (GB News) and yet the Father of one of the survivors said no boat or jet ski was involved and it was a rip tide that took them out to sea..

BonesBrennanz · 01/06/2023 20:19

He Daily Mail article says a rip tide alert was issued on the beach before the incident. Not sure I trust them though.

Billyho · 01/06/2023 20:21

toomuchlaundry · 01/06/2023 19:52

Exactly!

Wintersgirl · 01/06/2023 20:22

I knew that rip tides can be dangerous if you don't how to get out of them, but apparently they can sweep you out to sea at 6-8 feet a second, bloody hell how frightening

Sugarfree23 · 01/06/2023 20:26

There has to be more to it than a rip tide. Although a pure accident, natural causes has to be easier to live with than it being the result of someone's actions.

They have the Marine Accident Investigation involved and the Maritime & Coastguard Agency involved too.

I hope they get answers for all concerned.

LotsOfBalloons · 01/06/2023 21:18

The boat that's been impounded does tours from bmth pier. I wonder if it caused an accident/wave?

Sugarfree23 · 01/06/2023 22:03

I'm stunned at the size of the boat. I was picturing something much smaller, speedboat sized.
