What was going on! A crash in which 2 teens are killed and then a riot, with cops in full gear and shields and teens chucking rocks?

Ely is a really deprived area. The heat, people out on the streets, 2 deaths, perfect tinderbox.

MayBeeJuneSoon · 23/05/2023 15:09

Nobody worried about their job....getting to work? No?

Northernsoullover · 23/05/2023 15:10

Unfortunately, it's not the first time this has happened in this part of Cardiff. I feel awful for the parents. They couldn't move the bodies because of the riots.

SquashPenguin · 23/05/2023 15:15

Two kids had a collision with a bus whilst on an electric bike. The police turn up to seal off the area, it descends into ‘anti- police’ chaos. Quite why anyone felt the need to chuck paving slabs and fireworks at police, and set fire to random cars is beyond me. Idiots the lot of them.

RIP

Tragic

If a such a tragedy. Reading up it is a very deprived area with over half of children on free school meals. Multi generational unemployment isn't uncommon. Hopefully this will spur the welsh government into trying to systemically make changes, give hope

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 23/05/2023 16:04

Locally there's a real issue with teenagers on electric bikes and scooters basically playing chicken with motor vehicles, being an anti social nuisance and being drug dealers.

Because of this, the assumption in the 'community' was that the local lads that tragically lost their lives was somehow linked to police action for the above issues so when the police turned up all blue lights flashing it took a very short amount of time for the rumour mill to kick in and for the local thugs to make their thoughts about the police well known. The police were absolutely not involved in the initial incident where the lads lost their lives.

In the meantime, the real community of Ely which is generally decent are terrorised by these teenage/young adult thugs on their own doorstep with the escalation of their property being damaged because the police dared to turn up for a fatal road collision. Plus the poor parents of the lads who lost their lives having to deal with the extra grief of knowing their child was nearby and left in an undignified manner because it wasn't safe for the emergency services to relocate them.

All public transport for the area was cancelled too so anyone needing to get into the city for work will have needed to walk a fair distance to do so.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 23/05/2023 17:23

Scrub that, the police were involved. There's CCTV footage of them chasing the electric bike. Very disappointing that they've lied again, it does them no favours at all.

Not condoning what happened at all BTW just correcting my understanding that the police weren't involved in the initial collision.

I may have missed some of the item on the radio but it sounded like they were saying that the police had been near the bike before the crash but not when it hapoened

There are young lads like this near me and sadly every time I see them I steer clear as its an accident waiing to happen

Very sad for all involved

Toddlerteaplease · 23/05/2023 18:11

The BBC has said that the police were not involved.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/05/2023 18:12

Kids on bikes like this near me as well. And on scooters. They make me very nervous when driving.

marshmallowmatcha · 23/05/2023 18:17

They insisted there was no police chase. But then there's a video of a police chase. So what's that about? Different kids? This is all a bit odd and I can see why the community are upset. (Though riots and destruction don't help)

ashamed1235 · 23/05/2023 18:18

Watch the video on BBC news. The police said no police vehicles were on the road in question. They lied.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/05/2023 18:19

It looks to me like the van was just driving along the road.

GabrielAgreste · 23/05/2023 18:47

There’s some speculation on Twitter that the time stamp of the video jumps by 10 seconds between the bike going past and the van - which would mean the interval would be more like 11/12 seconds not 1/2. It’s very shaky footage filmed from a screen so I can’t be sure but I think I see it.

If this has been done it seems an inflammation move to release it like that.

Hmm how weird

Meixo · 23/05/2023 19:18

I've just read they were riding suron e bike capable of 40mph can be rigged going at 70mph with no helmet or protective gear. They retail at 4.5k a piece where did they get those from?

EmmaEmerald · 23/05/2023 19:22

When I first heard this last night, it seemed so odd that I thought the accident moght be gang war related but nothing I can see points to that. All very odd.

GabrielAgreste · 23/05/2023 19:26

The thing that makes me stop and think (I have no skin in the game, but I’m concerned this footage may trigger more trouble) is that if it is unedited CCTV footage, why hasn’t the file itself been shared instead of the screen being recorded on a phone.

ThreeFeetTall · 23/05/2023 19:29

Surely the police have trackers on their vehicles and so know exactly where their van was and when?

GiveUsACwtch · 23/05/2023 19:33

Those mindless yobs really do not represent the rest of us decent folk that live in the area! Yes it may be a deprived area, but the vast majority of the community are wonderful people who will go out of their way to help others... and that is the part that the media etc will never show!

Those poor boys, regardless of the circumstances really did not deserve to die! And thanks to the dickheads causing carnage on their own doorstep they were still laying on the floor under a tent until the early hours of this morning😢.

GabrielAgreste · 23/05/2023 19:35

@GiveUsACwtch absolutely, they didn’t deserve to die, very sad all round. Here’s hoping for a peaceful night.

EmmaEmerald · 23/05/2023 20:23

Give I don't think anyone's judging. I only went to Wales once, holidaying alone, and I have never felt so safe and looked after by locals. Can't wait to go back.

FunkyMonks · 23/05/2023 20:43

It's tragic what's happened but I think these bikes should be banned it makes me nervous I've seen a few lads on them in our area and I'm worried they will kill some innocent child, elderly or vulnerable person they have no regard for road safety they have been driving them up on the pavements no safety gear on either.
I have sadly seen the damage and mental anguish it has caused to family when a loved one has been involved in a motorised bike and a pedestrian collusion.
