What was going on! A crash in which 2 teens are killed and then a riot, with cops in full gear and shields and teens chucking rocks?

You're right to say that sometimes children from what might be seen as "nice families " do go off the rails but I think we can see that this is not what's happening in that area.

What can you tell about the boys' families from the photos you have seen?

Wearing Monclear and Canada goose retails at 1000 smoking spliffs put on social media for everyone to see road man persona. Live in a deprived area , riding SuR Ron motorbike retails for 4-5k drug runners are fond of them. I'm not sure where 15-16 year olds get the spare cash to buy those on a low income area. If the parents are loaded they surely would have moved out of area.

It doesn't take Poirot to work out..

Really?
The photos in the news say it all.
One of the mums they've used social media photos of, she's a grown woman with a teenager and she's doing duck lips selfies.

Yes @ReformedWaywardTeen I saw those pics in the Daily Mail she is the mother who is saying the police killed my son

That's all stuff you can tell about the boys, not their families. There was a discussion earlier where people agreed that even DC from nice families go off the rails through no fault of the parents. And someone said that's obviously not the case here. The evidence they gave was a selfie of the mum? I don't get it.

(The only selfie I can see looks like a million others and like it's from years ago given that the mum is now in her 40s, but apparently it tells us all we need to know about this family?)

If my child was doing the above things I'd move them away or ask social services to take them to protect them. In kids a TV show about kids in care SS took someone groomed by County lines to a rural area. There's only two outcomes being involved in gangs death or prison. I'd rather they were alive but removed from me than the alternatives.

Parents , SS and the police need to be clamping down on child explotation and moving these families and children. Grooming children for drug dealing should be life in prison its child abuse.

ilovebrie8 · 26/05/2023 12:50

The pics that are out there of the clothes, the bike smoking a spliff etc it’s quite clear what was going on and where the cash was coming from. No way could the parents not know what they were mixed up in and where the money was coming from it’s clear as day. They’ve possibly turned a blind eye now crying foul as a tragedy has occurred! It is a tragedy no doubt but life style choices led to it not the police ...

ilovebrie8 · 26/05/2023 12:54

Police and courts need to come down hard on drugs and the misery they cause ...we are way too soft hence the mess things are in.

SoTedious · 26/05/2023 14:36

Where would you move them to where there would be no drugs or kids getting up to no good? How would you finance the move and find somewhere to live if you were on a low income? What if your 16 year old said no, he wasn't coming?

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 26/05/2023 14:55

Not Ely, I'm a valleys girl, but I saw plenty of kids from good families mess up at the very least their teens/early 20s in one way or another, whether drug related or girls pregnant at 15/16 by a boyfriend in his 20s.

It was basically normal and I was unusual in that I didn't do any of those things.

They managed it with the boy in Kids tv show a documentary about kids in care. He was involved in county lines , ss police Council would assist the moves.

Meixo · 26/05/2023 15:42

Moving them away does work, I know someone with who was being exploited by gangs they were moved to arse end of nowhere and now very happy.

I spent my teenage years in a leafy bit of Surrey and there were a lot of drugs about. Same at my (private) school in the south west, we all knew who the dealers were. I'm sure the reasons vary from DC to DC and from community to community but it's a bit more complicated than just blaming the mother because however many years ago she did a selfie with a pout.

Brotherlove · 26/05/2023 19:17

On 1st may Keely Morgan was killed in Ely Cardiff by a driver. The community was upset as they viewed it as police not doing enough about drivers/scooters.
Then boys on scooters were by chance seen by the police - not chased but thought to be followed - and rode away to their death.

The community in uproar that the police had caused their deaths - live streaming on YouTube until one of the mothers pleased for peace so her son's body could be removed from the street where it lay.

I have family living in the community who watched it unfold online, who remember the bread riots years ago.

There are many projects in the community for youth/community to get involved in - trelai youth centre, the dusty forge, Grow Cardiff. Yes it's a deprived area but no more than the Valleys (less so actually).

Schools in the area work really hard, and the catchment Welsh speaking high school is rated outstanding by Ofsted.

Tragic all round really. They should never have been riding those scooters.

SoTedious · 26/05/2023 19:35

They weren't riding scooters?

Which Welsh school? The one in Fairwater?

SoTedious · 26/05/2023 19:55

Ofsted don't rate Welsh schools. Plasmawr was rated adequate by Estyn in 2019 but looks like it might have just been done again.

GCWorkNightmare · 26/05/2023 20:03

@Brotherlove doesn’t seem to be too hot on details. 😬

Brotherlove · 26/05/2023 20:14

Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr in Cardiff
A-level A*-B (%): 68.3

GCSE A*/A/9/8/7 (%): 38.4

2022 UK rank: 280 (tenth in Wales)

My point is...it's not all shit. There are options and opportunities if kids in the community are supported.
People saying there is nothing for kids to do are wrong...as I pointed out there are youth clubs & groups. Football teams, Girl guides/rangers. Volunteer work really hard for the community I'm told.
I don't live there but I have relatives who do, whose kids went through the school and are now away at Uni. You can succeed coming from that community - there are no excuses to behave like that...then blame the police for trying to keep the community safe.

Iwrotethissong · 26/05/2023 20:31

@Brotherlove most kids go to Cardiff West High School from Ely. A Welsh medium education is still seen as a bit elitist and is often chosen by...dare I say....more engaged parents.

SoTedious · 26/05/2023 20:37

I wonder how many kids from Ely and Caerau go to Plasmawr - I would imagine more of them are in English medium education and Cantonian for example is a different kettle of fish.

Or the kids have just joined in with the ‘family business’…..

Brotherlove · 26/05/2023 21:06

All of the kids from Ysgol Gymraeg Nant Caerau will as it's the feeder school..and those siblings still in the pentrebane Welsh school as it used to serve Ely.

Ely kids won't normally get a cantonion place. It's either Cardiff west or Mary immaculate (Catholic), or some CofW church going families can get into Bishop of Llandaff.

It really isn't as bad as it's being made out to be. There are always options and choices for parents to improve their kids lives.

Yes @Surelyitscoffeetime that crossed my mind....hence trying to deflect blame on to the police .

mydogisthebest · 27/05/2023 07:58

I see a vigil was held for the boys last night and they let off flares, fireworks and balloons! How great for the environment and wildlife

Scrub that, the police were involved. There's CCTV footage of them chasing the electric bike. Very disappointing that they've lied again, it does them no favours at all.

Not condoning what happened at all BTW just correcting my understanding that the police weren't involved in the initial collision.

Cans can't undertake pursuits. They can't chase anything. They may have been behind them observing and feeding back to the control room what the boys were up to but they would not have been trying to catch them. Not all police are pursuit trained either. You can be blue light trained to attend incidents but if you aren't pursuit trained you absolutely cannot chase anyone. It's disciplinary if you do. There are also rules about pursuits of individuals on bikes etc with no helmets on. It's frustrating as generally authorisation to pursue is not given if it's people just causing a nuisance.

Also the van may not have even been driven by a police officer. It could have been a member of the fleet team who has picked it up to take to the garage or be returning it to the station.
Probably best wait for the investigation to find out the facts.
