Just heard this on the radio, does anyone have an actual source? Can't see it anywhere yet, I'm sure that is what I heard, assume not 'serious' as in risk to them?

Anyone ever been in NYC and spotted a celeb- it’s usually a very, very low key situation, everyone lets them get on with their business. I’m thinking they would be no different safely inside a cab, bit of a pain having the paid paps running along the sidewalk trying to get a picture if you’re knackered and just want to get home. It comes with the territory, so best stay out of the public eye if you want to avoid that…oh, wait

Mackerson · 17/05/2023 19:45

4plusthehound · 17/05/2023 19:22

Sorry @Mackerson I was not clear.

It took them two hours to get home.

They drove off, were followed, pulled into a police station, waited a bit, left and tried again, did not work, went to another station, tried the diversion with the cab, eventually got home.

More fits and starts than fast and furious.

So it wasn't a constant chase lasting over 2 hours then? If the paps were being so dangerous, why didn't the police just warn the paps off at the station or arrest them for threatening or dangerous behaviour?

All these different stories don't seem to hang together with the Sussexes press release. I guess it'll all come out in the wash but I think they need to get a new security detail. Maybe they're hoping the Met will come and take over. 😉😄

MrsFinkelstein · 17/05/2023 19:41

Just to add, they could have phoned ahead and had the doormen at the apartment waiting and ready with massive umbrellas to block the paps when they left the car to walk in the building.

But they still would have known what building they were staying at

DinkyDaffodil · 17/05/2023 19:47

I don't know the truth about what went on behind the scenes and what are lies etc .... but feel this relationship will end tragically. I hope I'm wrong

Shall we all just wait for clarification.

NYPD says paparazzi made it "difficult" but it wasn't "catastrophic". I suspect there are huge numbers of videos to come in. And if the paparazzi were driving over pavements and going the wrong way up one way streets I trust that will come out too - including number plates and charges. From the current description it sounds as if other drivers and normal people were most at risk.

However leaving by a back door as Princess Diana did in Paris doesn't mean safety if the paps are involved. Proper security is key - and seems to have been missing here. Rather than expect this country or any other to pay for a British detail running into millions, perhaps a few grand for royal detail to train the celebrity detail on what to do and what not to do would be useful.

NY CCTV Department have said there isn’t any video coverage of the ‘chase’. The taxi driver denies that there was a chase.
🤷🏼‍♀️

Probably because the paps were not being threatening or dangerous, just annoying and intrusive. And there's no law against that.

Mackerson · 17/05/2023 19:49

fajitaaa · 17/05/2023 19:39

No one is thick enough to think that would work

That's not a nice way to speak about Harry.

Sarvanga38 · 17/05/2023 19:50

According to their fans on Twitter Charles & William did this to try to kill them.
Makes a change from Philip I suppose.

Death by traffic jam. Novel.

BiggerBoat1 · 17/05/2023 19:50

But Harry and Megan hate publicity and just want a quiet life. They've said that very clearly on Oprah, in his book and on a televised therapy session!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/05/2023 19:50

What if this was orchestred to show the royal family that they do in fact need better security

This is what some were suggesting from the start, but if it's true I can't quite see that the clearly exaggerated statement will have helped
More likely, it'll just do further damage to their credibility ...

NeverEverMore · 17/05/2023 19:50

H&M keep repeating the same pattern. Make wild claims that portray them as victims but it never turns out to be the truth. I wonder what the Walses are making of this latest escapade?

Neverfarfromasong · 17/05/2023 19:52

That recollections are still variable?

But Harry and Meghan are saying that they were dangerous and their actions were a threat to people's lives. Surely the police would investigate that? I'm sure, Harry's team will have recorded it all.
It's so confusing to know what to believe.

mumda · 17/05/2023 19:55

Recollections may differ.

Diorinthecountry · 17/05/2023 19:57

The both of them will dine out on this for months. Then when people question what happened, they will deny what they said in the statement and blame us for the way we interpreted the statement.

Rinse and repeat with the next drama for the headlines and £

I wondered if it was more of an attempt to get Charles to beg for their return to the UK with promises of H&M being ‘looked after’ by the palace. The video on TMZ doesn’t look like Meghan is worried or distressed, she’s smiling.

OnedayIwillfeelfree · 17/05/2023 19:58

Northernlurker · 17/05/2023 15:31

Shouldn't they have some sort of plan for this? Like stop their car for a start? Being pursued is awful and the paparazzi need to stop but I can't understand why you'd keep driving? It's cameras not terrorists. Although they may not have known that of course.
Agree it won't help their state of mind.

Who knows if it is cameramen, or terrorists? Or anyone with malicious intent? The NYPD have a duty to protect the people in the city. If that means providing police outriders, then so be it.

Sounds like exaggerated facts to me!

chaosmaker · 17/05/2023 20:00

Channel 4 news said they didn't want the paps to know where they were staying, hence not going straight to the hotel. They could wear masks to avoid having their photos taken but if nobody cared then there wouldn't be a market for the photos, surely.

spanieleyes · 17/05/2023 20:01

Surely if there were cars, scooters and everything else involved, there would be lots of mobile phone pictures and videos from pedestrians/tourists/passers by that could be used as evidence.
Or is NYC abandoned at night?

BadNomad · 17/05/2023 20:04

They weren't going to a hotel. They were going to a friend's house and they didn't want the press to know where the friend lives.

This is the stage I’m getting to with regards to my thinking about the two of them.

I keep trying to balance on the fence, but it’s becoming harder when their own words/recollections keep appearing to be reworked down the line.

AliceOlive · 17/05/2023 20:04

The taxi driver denies that there was a chase.

Where?

PleaseJustText · 17/05/2023 20:05

It's all very strange. Actual A-listers can happily take the subway in NYC but Harry and Meghan spend a couple of nights in New York and end up in a kerfuffle. The taxi driver has said he wouldn't call it a chase. There's a video on TMZ that shows two photographers chasing their car on foot, no doubt to get that photo of Meghan smiling in the backseat of the taxi that's been published. Ironically the photo I've seen is from Backgrid, a paparazzi firm "celebrities" can pay to photograph them. Prince Harry had another hearing on his quest for funded security listed in the London administrative court for 16th May 2023.
