Just heard this on the radio, does anyone have an actual source? Can't see it anywhere yet, I'm sure that is what I heard, assume not 'serious' as in risk to them?

The taxi driver confirmed that they were being followed and that he had to take them back to the police station after 10 minutes.

Ellaelle · 17/05/2023 20:07

Praying for Prince Harry and Princess Meghan and their little family Hope they stay safe! Some deranged people really have it in for them. The British (dm)paps trying to cause an 'accident' on US soil. John Miller former nypd deputy commissioner said exactly what happened, the paps tried to knock over civilians and police in the chase to get to princess Meghan. Anyone trying to downplay this is just as sick as the paps

Is that you Meghan?

Shhhquirrel · 17/05/2023 20:09

Why on earth didn’t they just drive to the nearest police station, rather than engaging in a dangerous ‘chase’?

Cornettoninja · 17/05/2023 20:11

Ironically the photo I've seen is from Backgrid, a paparazzi firm "celebrities" can pay to photograph them

I noticed that. I’m also suddenly very aware PH signed a three book deal.

They did. Twice.

The taxi driver?

Wiseflower · 17/05/2023 20:14

Hate the paparazzi! They will dare do whatever to get what they want. The whole media is part of the paparazzi.

Emotionalsupportviper · 17/05/2023 20:17

Don't believe a word of it - far too "pat" when they are fighting to have IPP status returned.

They cry "wolf" every two minutes. I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be a put-up job.

But even if they are genuine, the NY police would have done something about any cars breaking the driving laws that these paparazzi have supposedly flouted - this isn't Chief Wiggum we're talking about. They know what they're doing.

They have a security team of their own, (and in NY you can actually hire off duty police officers - who retain their police powers of arrest) - to act as security if you have enough money). Their security team seem to be a waste of money if they couldn't avoid/ get them out of this sort of situation.

A two-hour car chase? Really. Colour me skeptical.

Harry, Meghan and Ms Ragland were reportedly followed by half a dozen blacked-out vehicles which were being driven by unidentified people.

The vehicles are said to have driven on pavements, jumped red lights and reversed down a one-way street.

It has also been said at least one driver was using their phone behind the wheel.

At least one other is reported to have been photographing while driving.

One of the cars is said to have illegally blocked a moving vehicle.

I agree.

The paparazzi in some countries are scary and it must have brought back so much trauma for him.

That's patently ridiculous.

Sodullincomparison · 17/05/2023 20:18

In a previous life in a job in New York, I had dinner and events with some very high profile people. They often had their own entrance and their cars would their waiting.

I once tried to go in their entrance showing my invitation and was told “you might be British but you’re not the president ma’am, go round the the corner”

never saw any ever get into a taxi. My boss would never get in a taxi- she had her own driver.

also agreeing with PPs that I’m not sure how you have a chase in NYC given the amount of traffic lights, traffic and police everywhere.

you would phone the police surely and ask where you should go.

The police were involved and helped escort them.

Meanwhile, New York's mayor Eric Adams has said two police officers could have been injured as they assisted Harry and Meghan's private security team while their car was being followed.

CuriouslyDifferent · 17/05/2023 20:22

It takes 48 mins to go from one end of New York to the other.

assuming it was a high speed chase, looks like they stopped off in Oz, to pickup Dorothy, the Tin Man and the cowardly Lion.

wonder what fabrication they will come up with next.

#yawn except I find this a bit sick considering how his mother died.

BadNomad · 17/05/2023 20:24

It wasn't a high speed chase. No one claimed it was. It was a journey that took two detours to the police station and switching vehicles. All that takes time.

What made it "near catastrophic" then?

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 17/05/2023 20:27

In a statement, the New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed the outline of the Sussexes’ account but described it in less colorful language. The NYPD “assisted the private security team protecting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex” on Tuesday evening and “there were numerous photographers that made their transport challenging,” said Julian Phillips, the NYPD’s deputy commissioner for public information.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at their destination and there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries, or arrests in regard,” he said.

A local law enforcement source corroborated some of the couple’s account, telling CNN that the couple were followed by a “swarm” of paparazzi in cars, motorcycles, scooters after they left the event on Tuesday. A protective team from the New York Police Department (NYPD) followed Harry and Meghan in another car, and was forced to make some avoiding maneuvers to get away from the paparazzi, the source said.

Paparazzi on scooters and bikes zoomed down the sidewalk to keep up, the source said. There were many close calls, including short stops between front and backs of cars, but none resulted in a crash, the source added.
The couple’s convoy was escorted to a police precinct, where they were able to regroup, the source added.

Bluemuf · 17/05/2023 20:25

What made it "near catastrophic" then?

The stress of doing 10mph in New York City and a police escort.

Near Catastrophic…. about as near as London is to NY.

Shakespeareandi · 17/05/2023 20:29

Really. What happened to "be kind" ? Some really horrid, toxic comments on here. None of you know any of these people. Why so much hate. None of us know exactly what has happened between members of the these families. Does it make you feel better about yourself to post mean, bullying comments like this? Doubt it. Reading tabloids or negative stuff on-line will make you feel like this. They want to attract more readers so journalists and "influencers" will spin it for maximum effect. Be the bigger person and rise above it, don't just follow like you don't have a mind of your own. The royal family fall out has no impact on your life whatsoever. You don't need to "pick sides". Just leave them to it. Celebrate positivity.

BadNomad · 17/05/2023 20:30

Bluemuf · 17/05/2023 20:25

What made it "near catastrophic" then?

The recklessness of the people pursuing them. If they had have hit pedestrians or caused a crash on the busy roads, it would have been catastrophic.

WheresSpring · 17/05/2023 20:31

If you want to be left alone by the paps then STOP courting them, it is that simple. They keep demanding attention and then saying “oh please leave us alone”. It’s bloody ridiculous. They have (& had) enough ££££ to live perfectly well, they wanted more. More fool them.

Shouldnt those people have been arrested then if they had knowingly, and willingly acted recklessly, endangering innocent people, and the people they were pursuing?

So why engage it and out people at risk?
