I couldn't see another post so thought I'd create one.

There is a police press conference this afternoon. I can't see a time for this but it's sounding like a routine one.

She's obviously got mixed up as it's Blackpool Lane, then changes to Garstang Road a bit further up, presumably there's a parish boundary there. Not particularly inspiring that she's conflated two road names!

I still don't understand how, if the river was particularly slow moving where she was, how she managed to be swept to the fast moving part, then potentially out into Morecambe Bay. The Bay is treacherous though, and the number of rivers flowing into it make it even more so. The tidal bore can be extremely fast, and it's full of quicksand. Not an easy place to find someone.

It could be Morecambe or Fleetwood/Knotted as it goes both ways.

weightymatters73 · 07/02/2023 16:47

It's highly likely she is in the river, I have to be honest until a friend got into trouble near a river I was utterly unaware of the dangers - in his case he fell, hit his head and came to floating in the river. If he had not come to, he would have been dead.

Bodies can go missing for extended periods in rivers particularly if they have snagged on something underwater...I don't understand the private diver who says she will be close to where she fell in...if its a river of sufficient depth, she could be miles downstream.

I think it is rather suspicious that the CCTV camera at the caravan park was broken when she disappeared. Could it have been deliberately tampered with so there is no evidence of her disappearing. In this case I think the 2 scenarios are she has gone off of her own accord with someone pre planning the CCTV to not be working or someone has abducted her and the phone and dog were left specifically to make the police think she had entered the river.

I do enjoy reading thrillers and it does sound far fetched but what other explanation is there!!

CCTV not working is not an unusual occurrence at all.

I am not going to comment on the rest of your post…..

I'm not having a go its just curious that a man who has released a book within the past week, railroaded himself into being an unofficial spokesperson for the investigation even though he is not privy to most of the investigation is seen as more of an expert than the specialist diving teams and other professionals who have been working on this with the police from the start. Of course the police base their view on the input from these professionals that they have assigned to assist.

He's done this for years, and carried out hundreds of searches himself. He does this every day in southern britain with the police. I would say there is probably almost no one who knows more about him that searching for bodies in water.

I think this is the weir in St Michaels www.geograph.org.uk/photo/869245 That doesn't look like something a body would easily travel over in a period of low flow. If the body is down stream of there it HAS to go over that weir.

Thank you. I would be interested to hear Peter Faulding's view on this.

He has his own agenda. Note how he primarily said no way she's in there but if she is we will find her in a day, to actually it is likely she is but it will take several days, to now covering all bases and saying its probable it was something else entirely. Sure he provided his services for free, but not before making sure his name and that of his business have been plastered all over the news.

Well he's put his neck on the line so to speak.

They conducted forensics on the bench the day she went missing, are you expecting them to keep repeating them? It's seems as always the police can't win, and it's mainly around peoples ignorance and arrogance that they for some reason know better. The NCA have confirmed they have no doubt the police have followed all lines of enquiry from the start, there are no additional they feel were left out. They are an independent highly specialised body, do you feel you know more than them? Someone asking why they have 40 detectives assigned when they believe she entered the water- its because they have never said we aren't looking into any other options.

Imagine working in a really challenging job and seeing crap online like this. The guy who has launched himself into the spotlight (nought to do with his book of course) isn't privy to the full details of the investigation and rightly so, if you believe him more than the police, or random retired officers who should know better then that's up to you.

Agree. Unfortunately, the police can't win whatever they are doing.

I think this is the part that is fuelling speculaton. I know the police officer in the presser asked for no speculation, but when the police say something that doesn't entirely make sense, and the expert who has many years experience contradicts them as to the flow of the river then it's only going to make people ask questions.

If they'd said it was a fast flowing river and we think she drowned, then we saw pictures and film of a fast flowing river then most sensible people would think, oh no what a shame but believe the police.

But there seems to be a contradiction, plus faith in the police generally is pretty low at the moment, add to that they haven't got the name of the road correct. No wonder speculation is rife.

Staged disappearance?! @WimbyAce why? Did she owe a fortune, was she about to be sentenced to a prison sentence? She has two young children. How could any mother live away from their children with no identity just to avoid........ what? she wasn't in trouble. What money could a person make from disappearing and even if there was money to be made, who would put their children through this.

Does it matter?

Seems like a “win - win - win” for the family, his company, the investigation?

If he gets more media coverage for the case or even raises awareness of the risks of walking near open water - then all good.

If he is efficient and effective and nothing is found it will force the police to refocus elsewhere.

Plitvice · 07/02/2023 16:54

Well, if he had simply got involved and not offered his opinions in interviews and made dramatic claims then I would not have known anything about him for starters. He has done them a good turn while also raising his profile.

Laiste · 07/02/2023 16:54

Has the police mentioned the weir?

I wondered about the weir last week tbh.

The police won’t be “forced” to refocus, the super was clear that all lines on enquiry are being investigated, not just the river

Well that's what he says, years.

Do you not think that the North West Police Underwater Search & Marine Unit, who cover the whole area from Abersoch to the Scottish Borders also have significant expertise and have been doing it for years?

The difference is that they don't go in for self-promotion and don't go on TV criticising the work if other organisations.

There are plenty of properties backing on to those fields. If it's anything like our local park then at least some of those properties will have direct access into the field (whether they are supposed to or not) so could it be possible for her to have exited the area without going down one of the few official exists?

This is a really good point

Women do do this though. My dad’s mum « popped to the shops » when he was 3 and his brother 4. She never came back. No debts, no affair, just left with her coat and purse.

She turned up 40 years later and admitted she just didn’t want to stay. Nothing in particular to run away from, she just wasn’t happy.

melonraspberry · 07/02/2023 16:58

The police just aren’t explaining why they are so convinced she fell in. Seeing that I would conclude they think that as they suspect suicide due to info they have, but that clearly isn’t the case as her family and friends don’t think that. So they aren’t explaining why they are so convinced she fell in. Why not say they don’t know, they are searching the river , and searching the land and asking for dashcam footage. Why be so adamant when they have no evidence at all? In fact surely the phone / harness on the ground, not on the bench, the teams call plus a dry dog are all circumstantially pointing away from her going in the river .

Or for someone to take her, unwillingly, out of the field that way?

BlueSphere · 07/02/2023 16:58

Watch this video

Pay especially attention from 40s the diving expert says "when Nicola went in" ... slip of the tongue? Maybe they do have evidence that she went in but are puzzled why she cannot be found? Odd, odd odd!

No they haven't. You'd have thought a sensible thing would have been to put a camera above there, if there isn't one already. Any body isn't getting through there without being seen. And it's hard to see how in low flow, a body would get across that weir. This weir is just a few hundred yards from the bench, maybe closer.

There is absolutely no need for the police to reveal that information to the public. The only people who need to know that is her family.

Why do people think the public’s should be told the intricacies of the enquiry?

Unless it's within 20 feet of the phone and above water, it won't be saying anything
