I get why we haven't but when the Ukrainian president begs for it I think about how I'd feel, if it was my country.
We are surely just delaying the inevitable, we are consoling ourselves that trucks full of supplies is enough when in reality we are showing weakness.

Mary I'm not stupid, but how much do we allow, where would you think enough is enough?

RJnomore1 · 04/03/2022 23:37

Enough has long passed for me.

Invading a NATO country.

You put boots on the ground in Ukraine or planes above Ukraine. Russia has been given reason to attack NATO.
That happens... Buh bye.

No more Xmas.
No more fresh food.

Just war, radiation, death.

ThisIsGroundControl · 04/03/2022 23:38

@TwentyTOoo

I have to say I think if he invaded a NATO country there’s every chance that article 5 would be quickly forgotten and it would be a case of letting him do it to avoid a nuclear war, and again and again just hoping he gave up sadly.

Look at the agreement Ukraine had if they gave up their nuclear weapons ……

Agree, Ukraine did as they were asked and gave up nukes. Where does it stop? What world are we living in if the playground bully can do as he pleases
OP posts:
ThisIsGroundControl · 04/03/2022 23:40

Mary so as Ukraine weren't allowed (but wanted to) join Nato they are just collateral?

And Russia invades Poland, what do we do, nothing because we want to save Xmas and fresh food?

OP posts:
TwentyTOoo · 04/03/2022 23:40

Where does it stop ? In all honestly I think he could do as he pleases and get away with it NATO country or not until he got to France - then it would be an issue . For France the U.K. or US but up till that point I think other countries would be sacrificed rather than risk a nuclear war. It’s all looking very bleak

I do t think you understand, and I don't think I want to try to explain it to you any more.

You're not standing up to a playground bully that you may beat and he leave you alone. You're poking a 15ft black bear with twig..

ThisIsGroundControl · 04/03/2022 23:44

@RJnomore1

I agree with you op.

I understand the reasons given but I cannot shake the feeling we are cowards for not stepping up, and that not tackling dictators directly has never ended well.

There will be many posts disagreeing with me now but Putin has already breached our boundaries and he won’t stop without being stopped. I can only hope he does indeed run out of money.

I keep thinking about history lessons, when we questioned why Hilter was allowed to build an army, to stop reparations and told because we were too scared of a repeat of the great war so we didn't get involved in the beginning we just waited it out. The annexation of Crimea, the build up of troops on the border, all ignored by the world. Hitler himself said that at each turn he expected a country to raise an objection and yet they didn't.

The west will have been expecting a possible situation like this arising with Russia for many years and will have planned for it.

I suggest you leave it to the experts to know what’s best, not just for us but for the whole world.

Why do you think that even China hasn’t backed Russia in this dangerous war?

It’s a complex situation that needs great care.

wanttomarryamillionaire · 04/03/2022 23:44

@ThisIsGroundControl im utterly disgusted that we just sit back and watch this happen with no intervention. Sanctioning the ogliarchs is pointless because we have given them to much time to remove their wealth. We are now just sitting back watching Ukrainian children die!

ZenNudist · 04/03/2022 23:45

You need to get a grip with your bloodthirsty bollocks.

Itsnotover · 04/03/2022 23:45

Hitler didn’t have nuclear weapons. I can’t believe I’m reading such ignorance.

How exactly can we help Ukraine if we get attacked ourselves?

Mary and I wish not to explain it to you. But above articulates it well, although I'd say Germany would be the sticking point

China and there response will probably be the most important factor. I hope they will provide the route to peace, but that will come at its own price.

Instead of speculating, read what the experts are saying about how we handle not only this but any future threat to NATO members.

It is NOT a case of we’re going to have to be bombing eventually. This has really pissed me off.

TwentyTOoo · 04/03/2022 23:49

It’s utterly terrifying he holds all the power once he has invaded one nato country if he decides to and gets away with it , which I think he would then he will do as he pleases.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 04/03/2022 23:49

@MaryAndHerNet fair play to you for showing patience for the ridiculous OP, who opened her post saying that she understood why a NFZ wasn’t an option, but clearly doesn’t have a clue.

Sanction oligarchs, boycott a few companies, send a few trucks, absolve us from reality.

No , I understand why they haven't chosen to have a NFZ, doesn't mean I agree.

Re Nato, it has been announced today we will defend every inch of Nato land, is this not true?

OP posts:
Namechangedforgoodreason · 04/03/2022 23:55

Erm...that was announced a while ago. Plus is kind of in the treaty for all NATO nations. Really not sure what you are trying to do on this thread

RoseRedRoseBlue · 05/03/2022 00:00

@Namechangedforgoodreason 👏👏

Selkiesarereal · 05/03/2022 00:00

Because we will all die in a nuclear attack, simple as that, is that what you want, to be annihilated in the first attack or survive and enter a cold winter, dying a slow lingering death.

Itsnotover · 05/03/2022 00:01

Worry and stress people probably? Like a lot of people on MN these days Hmm

Viviennemary · 05/03/2022 00:02

They just can't.

MaryAndHerNet · 05/03/2022 00:04

"No , I understand why they haven't chosen to have a NFZ, doesn't mean I agree"

You don't agree.. whilst acknowledging you understand that it could lead to 90% of human life being killed in a world ending nuclear war.

Yeah.. ok..
