Russia conflict is terrifying me

I've seen another of threads on here and to be honest to scared to look through them. I've got my 2 children off for half term and encouraged them to watch films and play as there is so much on russia. My teenage ds has come to me today dating its all over the news on his phone etc and he's scared and to be honest I am. I won't show that infront of my children but I am. I had a massive fear of war when I was little, no idea where it came from but I was always asking questions about war and if we will die etc. My anxiety on this since boris speech has heightened and I'm so scared now. What do we do if there is war? Will there be a war? I'm just so scared. I know there's alot of people who are scared but please put my mind at ease.

@Libraryghost

You have got more chance of Putin joining a boy band than nuclear weapons beings disarmed. They are here to stay. There is absolutely no chance in the world that Russia, China or the USA would disarm. We will keep ours and I am glad about it too because it’s stalemate if we all have them. Obviously I would prefer they had not been discovered in the first place but they have and we have to live with it.
Just imagining the name for Putins boy band, the Putrid Asshats came to mind. Sorry, worry is making my mind a daft place atm.
Miracle29 · 04/03/2022 07:59

@bakermanits impossible to avoid, I've tried too. Like this morning about the nuclear plant it came up on my phone as breaking news. So just as I think I'm calmer today sonething else pops up.
@marmelace i was thinking the same thing about the boyband lol.
Why have they not assassinated this vile human yet?

Well I was feeling calmer until I've just seen putin rages West is declaring war as kremlin warns uk heading for open conflict with Russia. I was in quite a good mind set and now I'm feeling nervous and anxious again...just when I think it won't cone to uk I read that! Why is no one stopping this man.

Turn off the notifications and delete the news app. Just don’t engage with it. There is absolutely nothing you can do about.

MagicFox · 05/03/2022 17:01

@Miracle29 was that in the daily Mail? I think he's said he'd consider it declaration of war by west if no fly zone imposed. In terms of UK Russia has said they will respond to sanctions by undermining British interests in Russia

Miracle29 · 05/03/2022 17:15

It was daily mail and the sun I think. I didn't read it to be honest I just saw the headline. Am I right in think we are not imposing a no fly zone? Or has something changed? I haven't seen anything to set my nerves off this week then saw that.
My little dd was watching a film on TV last night as I was doing tea and I hadn't realised it had finished and gone back to the channel it was on before and the news was on and she saw it all questioning me on it. She said mummy thats scary is it coming here...my heart sank. I reassured her then read that just now.

Yes you're right

Marmelace · 05/03/2022 17:40

My 16 year old autistic son has offered to buy a water filtration system and solar panel out of his savings, I've told him not to worry and tried to distract him. It's horrible to see him so scared. We are having a poker night with his brothers tonight.

It's so hard to know the right things to say.
marieantoinehairnet · 05/03/2022 17:48

Putin is being incredibly inflammatory though, and I really don't like how he seems to have a real focus on the UK, his guard dog Maria Zakharova is s awful. I worry that this whole thing is a ruse for global domination.

Miracle29 · 05/03/2022 18:14

@marmelace bless him that's so thoughtful. It is so hard to know what to say.
Just when I think to myself we are safe and my nerves are calm i read a breaking news headline. It's just so scary. I'm currently sat at home with covid which isn't helping either everytime I change the channel something else is said. As I said before I'm not very knowledgeable at all with things like this, hence the thread so I'm very confused as to why he's so focused on the uk.

Because that is exactly how world wars start.

I'm very confused as to why he's so focused on the uk.

He's not. You are getting your news from UK sources, hence the focus on the UK.

I go from not thinking about and trying to do something mundane to it all hitting me at once. I feel guilty for all the dread in my stomach when all the Ukranians are enduring such terrors.

Miracle29 · 05/03/2022 18:30

Exactly how I feel @marmelace.
I've always feared wars but always been told don't worry, it won't come here, we are safe, as a matter of fact i was laughed at for having such a fear, but this time people are saying it is coming here, we are not safe, plan ahead, all sorts of things and my mind then just races in what to believe. I know not every news source is reliable and some twist the truth abit but I never know what to believe.

Ok - Putin is not focussed on the UK. He is focussed on Russia and rebuilding his supposed empire. Virtually every country in the world has condemned Russia so the UK is no different . Even China are pissed off with him.
Planning ahead is a waste of time, plan for what? Nothing has happened to a NATO country and as it stands we are not at war. What are you going to do? There is nothing you can do.

China are not pissed with him, they censored the Paralympic chair this morning when he condemned the war. The muted his speech and removed the person signing, censorship = approval
youhadmeatjello · 05/03/2022 19:10

Daily Mail (!) is reporting specific threats against Britain today so I think we are definitely part of his focus - not sure why he’s singling us out though! Maybe he’s extra pissed because the tories have taken so much Russian funding.

Weirdly I’m feeling less anxious about it all now. I think I reached peak anxiety and it wasn’t possible to maintain that level without completely burning out.

I agree that limiting news is the best way to start dealing with it.

There's a lot to be said for sticking to reading a broadsheet in the morning, and watching the news once in the evening. Prob OK to hear news updates if you have the radio on during the day, as it's less immediate without pictures

Miracle29 · 05/03/2022 19:22

@youhadmeatjello yes I've seen a few specifically at Britain today that's what made me more nervous. I'd just got myself in a I think we are OK, we've got this place to reading them and thinking oh shit! Though I do also read the comments because sometimes strangely I find some of them calming.

youhadmeatjello · 05/03/2022 19:25

@Miracle29 weirdly I feel calmer now despite all of this. It sort of feels like a slap down more to our politicians.

Libraryghost · 05/03/2022 19:27

@marieantoinehairnet Do you think? I was getting the distinct impression that China were starting to see their alliance with Putin as a bit of liability? Again it depends what news source you watch/read. Hard to know what China think about anything tbh.. very secretive..

I stick to the Guardian and Times

Ivegottagoforaliedown · 05/03/2022 19:43

Same here. I'm prone to a bit of anxiety but I'm so worried at the moment. It feels very self indulgent because I'm safe in the UK but I have a 5 month old baby and I keep imagining him dying from radiation sickness and I can't bear it. Every time I feel a bit less anxious there's another terrifying development. And those poor poor people I'm Ukraine. It's heartbreaking

AlwaysLatte · 05/03/2022 19:45

I think @Gowithme has said it best of all. Give them a hug and maybe watch a silly film to take your minds off it. ❤️

youhadmeatjello · 05/03/2022 19:46

That’s what gets me spiralling every time - all my anxieties are about DS. It’s that need to try and prepare and protect from all eventualities and takes you down some really unbearably dark thought loops it’s horrible
