Has Biden just lost the election?

I've just watched the news and seen Biden forget Trumps name. Not just a quick slip of the tongue and corrected, but calling him George and not knowing how to correct himself.

I absolutely don't blame him - I often struggle to remember something, or call ds1 by ds2s name. We all do it. And Biden is presumably very tired in the run up to next week.

But Trump is of course making huge capital out of this and I'm worried that voters who are wavering will swing back to Trump.

Please tell me I'm wrong!

He did not come out early to declare victory though. He came out and declared war and said the votes were wrong (despite fuck all votes been counted at that point) and that it was some kind of fraud again without votes being counted. He came out and said he should win but to me, that was the best speak to say he realises he will not be winning. He can contest it of course but sure why say so early on that you are going to contest things if you really believed you had a chance at winning?

I think Biden will win and spend a frustrating term battling Senate, Congress and the Supreme Court.

Biden won't be battling the House of Representatives. Maybe the Senate, but it is possible that could end up as a tie, in which case Harris will have the casting vote. Having said that, the US is not like the UK. It is not uncommon for the President to have to deal with a Congress where one or both houses have a majority for the other party. The Democrats controlled the House of Representatives throughout Reagan's time as President, for example.

Does anyone know why the observers were kicked out last night (and on election day)? I think it was Nevada?

PerkingFaintly · 05/11/2020 20:44

I'm losing track of what's happening where, Jux.

But in general, Republican-supporters in various tight races have been claiming they aren't being allowed to observe, when in fact there are Republican (and Democrat) observers already there.

It's not a free-for-all because numbers are limited by Covid precautions, and I think in one place in Nevada the observers were trying to get into call centres where there are no ballot papers but personal information is being spoken on the phone. Another place the observers wanted to stand closer to the counting tables and I think have now been allowed.

Can't find a comprehensive link but some info here:

The Trump campaign is trying a variety of lawsuits about, oh, anything, and several of these have already been thrown out for being junk.

So there's lots of noise about fraud and poor little Trumpies being barred from observing properly, but so far I haven't seen anything suggesting a genuine problem with the count (other than counters feeling intimidated by large numbers of shouting angry Trumpies, some with guns). That might just mean I don't know about a genuine problem, of course, but so far it's lost in the loud crying of "wolf."

I knew something was fishy when the Democrats did not want to use ID. Apparently, it is racist.WTF explain what is racist about this. Also, the vote by mail and early. My friend received several ballots for her and her dead husband. She did not even requested hers.

There are quite a LOT fraud being reported and lawsuits. Really hope that the cheaters are exposed big time.

Biden should say that he is happy with recounts if he does not fear anything. Personally, it is not about who wins anymore but about exposing elections fraud.

Oh just re-found the video I was looking for, by an election observer in Michigan.

(The Michigan lawsuit has indeed now been thrown out as garbage.)

Yes, voter ID is racist in the US. 11% of US citizens (more than 21 million Americans) do not have government issued photo ID. This predominantly affects minority voters. Around 25% of African-Americans do not have ID, compared to 8% of the white population. Many states exclude forms of ID in a way that deliberately discriminates on racial grounds and, where voter ID laws have been introduced, they are enforced in a discriminatory manner. And in-person fraud (which is what voter ID is intended to stop) is vanishingly rare, so this is a solution in search of a problem.

There are lawsuits, undoubtedly, but the reports of fraud circulating on social media are all untrue, as are Trumps claims on this front.

Detroit Free Press gives detailed rebuttal of Trump's shit-stirring lies. This is worth reading for anyone tempted to believe anything Trump said last night.

And another detailed rebuttal. I'm just getting these here in case we need them later.

I have a feeling we're going to see plenty more Fear-Uncertainty-&-Doubt merchants puffing the Trumpy lies. Trump's never exactly been a good loser...
