Has Biden just lost the election?

I've just watched the news and seen Biden forget Trumps name. Not just a quick slip of the tongue and corrected, but calling him George and not knowing how to correct himself.

I absolutely don't blame him - I often struggle to remember something, or call ds1 by ds2s name. We all do it. And Biden is presumably very tired in the run up to next week.

But Trump is of course making huge capital out of this and I'm worried that voters who are wavering will swing back to Trump.

Please tell me I'm wrong!

miss You don't need to list Trumps' faults I know them all well! I am simply saying that many will stick with him because he has their back (in their view)

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/10/2020 11:52

@myhobbyisouting exactly. I think people in the UK dont appreciate just how conservative rural America is. Pennsylvania has Philadelphia which is largely Democrat so that skews the stats.

My family in Boston, all highly educated family, are all trump supporters. they stand by him no matter what. They even stand by pence which I found strange as two of them are gay and well... we all know his view of gay people and his utter disdain of the LGBT community. It absolutely bewilders me.

Newpuppymummy · 27/10/2020 11:56

I like others don’t understand why they have put forward such an elderly man as a candidate. That’s the best that they could do? That in itself worries me. For what it’s worth I think Trump will get back in

zoemum2006 · 27/10/2020 11:56

225,000 Americans have died and the senate left without voting through an economic support bill.

If tAmericans want to vote Trump because Biden used the interviewers name then they are insane.

PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe · 27/10/2020 11:57

Biden is a placeholder. He knows it and we know it. I suspect he's fine with that. I hope he wins. There's a slightly tiresome vogue for pointing out that he's a bit shit but at least he's not Trump, as if people are anxious to show how much they now about the intricacies of US politics. He's actually quite a lot more than that. He wouldn't have been my first pick but I'd vote for him every day of the week and twice on a Sunday.

Friendsoftheearth · 27/10/2020 11:58

minty you are being rather silly. To win a landslide you need to have a democrat leader that does not have dementia, end of. You can't wheel in a frail old man that is gibbering away and expect any swing voter to think thats it! This is just the guy to lead the country through a pandemic, mass recession and future wars!!!

Grin honestly it would be funny if it were not so bloody tragic.

The propensity of gay and LGBTQ+ people to be right-wing is a tangle I will never be able to unpick.
zoemum2006 · 27/10/2020 11:59

FWIW... I think they selected Biden because he’s a very unifying candidate* and I think America is desperate to get away from divisive politics.

*by other theory is that he’s no ones first choice but no group ‘wins’ and makes the other resentful (see Sander’s supporters anger over Hillary).

GetRid · 27/10/2020 12:02

The NBC interviewer who Biden was speaking to during that interview is called George!

I think he was struggling for words because of his stutter and the 'George' came out as he was addressing the presenter.

Obviously it's not a good look but I'm hoping the simple fact that he's not Donald Trump will be enough to get him over the line.

PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe · 27/10/2020 12:04

@Friendsoftheearth You seriously think there's a greater chance of mild-mannered Denny-Crat Biden using the Gold Codes in a moment of forgetfulness, than there has been of palpable lunatic Trump using them in a moment of bombast?

Lillygolightly · 27/10/2020 12:04

I’m shocked that people think Biden looks old and fragile, has dementia etc He seems relatively sprite to me, and in control of his faculties, with a firm grasp on the issues at hand with understanding on how those issues affect people.

In comparison Trump is overweight, unhealthy diet, tango orange skin...so actually no idea if his real complexion is a healthy one. Not to mention the fact that he is very clearly mentally unstable himself. Yes the guy can shout about America till the cows come home, but if you listen it’s the same few lines repeated and shouted over and over, beautiful, tremendous blah blah blah. There is never any real detail to anything he says, he presents so many untruths as absolute fact, won’t be told he is wrong, and is just downright morally corrupt. I can’t believe what he has gotten away with over the years, I’m absolutely and utterly shocked at all he has escaped. Never ever has anyone looked, and been so clearly guilty, and yet on he goes still being president. All this must surely have to gone to his head, his ego was big before, it must be out of bounds by now. If he wins this election I think it will be disastrous, because if he had any inkling that he was untouchable before, this will really be giving him the big fat green light.

While Biden may be less than ideal, he is certainly the lesser of two evils. I actually think he speaks well, and speaking well against Trump is far from easy for ANYONE, let alone if you have a stutter. I like the fact he provides detail to what he states, he doesn’t just make random willy nilly tag line statements. I have had close personal dealings with dementia, and if can do this with dementia then it’s a bloody miracle.

I’m not saying Biden is perfect, he’s not...but if I were an American I know which way I would cast my vote.

All that being said I wouldn’t be remotely shocked if Trump gets his 4 more years.

PoorMansPaulaRadcliffe · 27/10/2020 12:05

Demmy

Cam77 · 27/10/2020 12:05

He’s not the best candidate .... so he’s fortunate to be running against Trump who is the worst President in history. And I mean come on, how much bat shit crazy stupid shit has Trump said? Is global warming still a Chinese conspiracy?

Fact is 95% of voters made up their minds a long time ago. Only a tiny fraction of Americans will see that clip and only a tiny fraction of those will be undecided.

FairFridaythe13th · 27/10/2020 12:07

I genuinely don’t think I can call this one. It’s between the devil and the deep blue sea.

Cam77 · 27/10/2020 12:09

Honestly this kind of stuff is totally trivial for the vast majority of voters. They vote on stuff like which party (they believe) will be better at keeping them safe and (they believe) keep most money in their pockets.

Our PM hid in a fridge and pocketed a reporters phone. But people didn’t care because they (wrongly) thought he had a decent plan for Brexit and (wrongly) thought he would overall make a more decent and more capable leader than the man he was running against.

DelilahDingleberry · 27/10/2020 12:12

Why do people talk rubbish about “early onset dementia”. At 77 it wouldn’t be early onset, which only applies under 65.

Cam77 · 27/10/2020 12:14

I think Biden is too old. In all other aspects he’s just an average Democrat.

Fiscally conservative by European standards, but decent compared to Republicans and not Republican batshit on issues like abortion and guns.

Also, he’s not an insufferable tax dodging asshole like Trump.

Above all he wants the US to be part of the climate crisis solution and isn’t calling climate a change “a hoax”.

Biden isn’t a great candidate, but the choice is crystal clear.

Notthegoldenchild · 27/10/2020 12:17

Biden of course is not a great candidate but what he has got going for him is that he is not trump. That is basically it. He is not trump. That would be enough to get my vote.

FairFridaythe13th · 27/10/2020 12:19

Ironic as trump seemed to get a large ‘anyone but Clinton’ vote in 2016.

My money is on a lovely court case coming his way (hence his desperation to keep in office)

Lurkingforawhile · 27/10/2020 12:19

I didn't know he had a stutter either - he must have worked so hard on public speaking. I worry about his age but then he has experience, and he isn't Trump, so not really that much of a concern. I worry more about the Supreme Court and challenges to the validity of the result

Notthegoldenchild · 27/10/2020 12:20

Ah yes poor old Killary Clinton as they dubbed her. I still would have voted her in before this lad.

Somethingkindaoooo · 27/10/2020 12:22

@ChaChaCha2012

It's not a job for an old man I'm afraid.

Trump is 74, Biden is 77. Is there a particular cut off when someone becomes an old man?

74 and 77 are both old.

America should stop nominating old men. They need young fresh blood!!
