Has Biden just lost the election?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/10/2020 09:22

I've just watched the news and seen Biden forget Trumps name. Not just a quick slip of the tongue and corrected, but calling him George and not knowing how to correct himself.

I absolutely don't blame him - I often struggle to remember something, or call ds1 by ds2s name. We all do it. And Biden is presumably very tired in the run up to next week.

But Trump is of course making huge capital out of this and I'm worried that voters who are wavering will swing back to Trump.

Please tell me I'm wrong!

And will be pushing/over 80 by the end of their term. Both being pushed along by those whispering in their ears.

Notthegoldenchild · 27/10/2020 12:24

I love that Obama is out there supporting Biden but then I could just watch Obama sitting doing nothing and still get pleasure. I have a serious crush on him.

BlueThistles · 27/10/2020 12:25

Yes he will lose the Election because he has Parkinson's and is not fit for office.

dreamingbohemian · 27/10/2020 12:27

The baby boomers have a death grip on US politics. It's incredibly frustrating.

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/10/2020 12:30

America should stop nominating old men. They need young fresh blood

I do agree with the sentiment. Thing is Americans seem to want an old, white guy running the country at the moment. No one would risk a woman after the Hilary defeat. Apparently Biden said he had no intention of running but did so specifically because he knew he was the man for the job. Shame he isn’t a decade younger of course. And not that I’m a staunch Biden fan. Very much in the “anyone but Trump” camp.

Cam77 · 27/10/2020 12:32

It’s going to be close but I think Trump will get in via thanks to appointment of Amy Barret in the Supreme Court.

She’ll provide a contested electoral college majority, following a long legal battle with mass voter meddling and interference in states like Pennsylvania.

It will be the second time the Supreme Court overturns the will of the people and hands vistoty to the Republicans in 20 years.

Cam77 · 27/10/2020 12:37

I’m pretty sure of it. Trump will lose the popular vote by even more this time, perhaps by around 3-4% but STILL get in because the US system invites targeted meddling and political interference in crucial states. And this will be backed up by their newly formed Supreme Court. Trump will win but America’s moral standing in the world will be left in tatters. (I mean ever more so)

This is what I am afraid of.

I think almost everyone has made their minds up a good while ago.
Biden is known for gaffes so I don't see a small one making a difference either way.
The people I know who are voting Republican are doing it mostly in-spite of Trump.
People know who he is as well by now and they either like it or don't.

The country is very split, we live in an urban area with only Biden signs. We took a rural holiday recently and it was a sea of Trump signs.

But there are more votes in the Urban areas, our state will vote Blue.

Friendsoftheearth · 27/10/2020 12:51

I don't envy the choice before the American people, but they are reaching a critical stage now and a fork in the road about their future, the election is symptomatic of the deep rooted problems that are just under the surface. The young will eventually wrestle back the country from the boomers, hopefully before it is too late and start making the changes they want to see - racial equality, climate response and a future that is theirs and not the failing old men we see before us now.

The US is a great country, with such potential - it needs to liberate itself from the claws of power and modernise. It is in danger of being left in the 80s.

This is very likely and terrifying.

The only hope is that Biden wins enough states convincingly. Voter turnout is on track to be the highest in a century so we'll see.

Frazzled13 · 27/10/2020 12:54

I can't believe that after four years of Trump's bigotry, hysteria and general ignorance that anyone should be equally worried about Biden using the host's name, George, in an out of context clip.
In my opinion, Trump's dementia is out there for all to see.

I agree with your first point. As far as Trump having dementia, I’d bet that regardless of the truth, anyone could pull together a bunch of clips that give that impression.
Out of context snippets prove nothing about either of them

halloweenagain · 27/10/2020 13:09

I agree with @dreamingbohemian that Biden needs a clear win to keep it out of the courts.
I don't think that is impossible looking at current data.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 27/10/2020 13:12

Anyone who watches Biden’s performance in two debates and two town halls in the past month and concludes he has dementia is simply not being honest.

The statement that he didn’t correct using the host’s name is false also. In the full clip it’s very clear he knew precisely what he was saying.

It’s very grim to see posters so committed to disinformation.

On the other hand it’s immensely cheering that, seven days out, Fox News Extremely Online nonsense is all the Trump campaign has to grasp for. Entirely different to the Comey letter etc.

Biden is doing well not to be rubbing his hands with glee.

HelloToMyKitty · 27/10/2020 13:15

Well, Philadelphia is on fire, which is bad news for Biden’s hopes to pick up Pennsylvania 🤷‍♀️

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/10/2020 13:16

@HoldMeCloserTonyDanzer (brilliant user name btw)

I agree that if you see the full clip, or watch Biden in debate, you see a fuller picture but I'm worried about the portion of the electorate who just see the short clip and judge on that.

3 weeks ago I was very confident in a Democrat win. I'm becoming less so and I'm really worried.

The violence in Kenosha increased Joe Biden’s polling lead by 2-3 points in Wisconsin.

There is no empirical evidence - from anywhere this summer - that BLM protests increase Trump support. His “law and order” pushes have coincided with drops in his polling. Because voters quite rightly think that a president who presides over civil unrest should be punished for it. And they know his ludicrous rhetoric is making things worse not better.

MadameMinimes · 27/10/2020 13:25

I think the point was rather that if the city is burning and there is widespread rioting then it will disrupt Election Day and people won’t get out and vote in the city, which will skew the state in favour of the rural republicans. It’s actually a valid concern.

MJMG2015 · 27/10/2020 13:26

@Notthegoldenchild

My family in Boston, all highly educated family, are all trump supporters. they stand by him no matter what. They even stand by pence which I found strange as two of them are gay and well... we all know his view of gay people and his utter disdain of the LGBT community. It absolutely bewilders me.
It feels like that game 'one of these has to be incorrect'
  • All highly educated
  • All Trump supporters
MadisonMontgomery · 27/10/2020 13:27

We were talking about it at work and one of my colleagues reckons the democrats want to lose - he thinks they want to let Trump deal with the fallout of Covid then come back in 4 years with a fab contender and win. Hadn’t thought about it that way but it makes sense.

halloweenagain · 27/10/2020 13:28

I know college educated Trump supporters, their support for him is linked to his emotional pull rather than an intellectual decision.
Statistically they are in the minority however.

Honkandhoot · 27/10/2020 13:31

Given that trump has mocked a disabled reporter, openly bullied numerous people, been an open misogynist etc no I don't think one slip of the tongue will sway it!

MJMG2015 · 27/10/2020 13:36

@Notthegoldenchild

Biden of course is not a great candidate but what he has got going for him is that he is not trump. That is basically it. He is not trump. That would be enough to get my vote.
Yeah. You'd think that would be a no brainier really, but apparently not.

No idea how Biden made it to that position, what were people thinking? But I guess it's like everywhere, no brilliant alternative.

It's going to be interesting & if trump does get in again, he's going to be beyond insufferable.

That, at least, makes some sense. Bloody scary how many will suffer in those 4 years though
VettiyaIruken · 27/10/2020 13:38

Biden was the wrong choice. He hasn't got a hope of winning.
