Has Biden just lost the election?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/10/2020 09:22

I've just watched the news and seen Biden forget Trumps name. Not just a quick slip of the tongue and corrected, but calling him George and not knowing how to correct himself.

I absolutely don't blame him - I often struggle to remember something, or call ds1 by ds2s name. We all do it. And Biden is presumably very tired in the run up to next week.

But Trump is of course making huge capital out of this and I'm worried that voters who are wavering will swing back to Trump.

Please tell me I'm wrong!

Biden makes sense as a candidate, he is too old but the other candidate is as well so even that cannot be used against him.

The radical left tag cannot be used against him ( The idea Harris is radical left is daft but you still hear it)

He is centrist and appeals to the voters that need to be won back. He doesn't galvanize the base but he has Trump doing that job for him.

Point the post where I said that Trump will win?

We do this thing in the UK where we read between the lines to infer intent. You are all over talking down Biden and talking up Trump. It is fairly clear you want Trump to win, and fairly clear you also think he will.

If you in fact don't think he'll win, you're just trolling trying to undermine Biden on behalf of someone who you know isn't a good choice for the US. Very odd behaviour.

@DorisDaisyMay

I am definitely for the Trojan horse theory. Nothing else makes sense. He might be running because he wants to be president but He doesn’t run the party.

The party runs the party and the party will always do what is best for the party. (Powerful People Handbook 101) (I just made that up!)

Using Biden as a Trojan horse would be a disaster for the party. Voters would never trust them again.

@blueangel19I wonder if in the US under Trump there are terrorist attacks happening like in France? Parties pushing to open borders to illegals ARE THE MOST DANGEROUS.

There have been a few since he took office. The car-ramming at Charlottesville, the shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue, the El Paso shooting to name a few.

There was the arrest of the men plotting to kidnap the Governor of Michigan last week.

Trojan horse Hmm People are voting for Biden AND Harris. She is on the ticket. There is no stealth here. Everyone knows that if something happens to Biden she will become president.

It is very possible that Biden will not be able to serve a full term and she will take over. But he's not going to do that unless he really has to. He's wanted to be president since the 1980s. He was expected to run in 2016 (and he probably would have won) but he dropped out when his son died.

prh47bridge · 31/10/2020 08:39

No, Biden is not a Trojan horse to get Harris in. It may be that he won't serve a full term and Harris will take over but we don't know that. However, I do not believe he will stand aside unless his health has clearly failed. If the Democrats used Biden as a Trojan horse, Harris would be regarded by many as in illegitimate president and the country may become ungovernable.

On the subject of the thread, Biden has not lost the election. On Nate Silver's fivethirtyeight website he is rated as having a 90% chance of winning against Trump's 10%. That doesn't mean it is certain. After all, 10% chances succeed 1 in 10 times - that's what it means to be a 10% chance. But all the indications are that Trump will lose by a big margin. The question is whether he and his supporters will accept that. Trump is already telling his supporters that the Democrats are stealing the election through massive electoral fraud and has refused to commit to a peaceful handover of power if he loses. I hope that is all just bluster. I worry it might not be.

The Democrats cannot force Biden out once he is President. In the UK the PM's party can force him or her to resign at any time. In the US that cannot happen. Forcing the President out against his will requires the Vice President, the majority of the cabinet, two-thirds of the Senate and two-thirds of the House of Representatives to declare that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.
LadyEloise · 04/11/2020 08:37

Your thoughts now Mumsnetters.
What do you think ?
The DailyMail app yesterday had a significantly placed article on Joe Biden's confusion when addressing his supporters.
He really was confused.
Sad

Notthegoldenchild · 04/11/2020 12:45

I would say he was under a lot of stress and strain and trump rarely comes across better.

What do we think so far ladies and gents? Biden to win?

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 04/11/2020 13:02

I suspect not. Who’d’ve thought 2020 could have got any more weird?

prh47bridge · 04/11/2020 13:30

The result is clearly closer than expected. State-level polling has failed again. However, as things stand it looks like Biden will win, albeit by a much narrower margin than predicted. It is, of course, still possible that Trump will win. There is also a strong possibility that challenges from one or both sides will end up in the Supreme Court.

If the challenges are not decided by 14 December it could get very messy.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 04/11/2020 13:31

I didn’t think Biden could win with the Outstanding state votes as it stands? Then the mail votes too.

What a mess!

unmarkedbythat · 04/11/2020 13:34

Looks like Biden. Shame about the Senate though.

prh47bridge · 04/11/2020 13:44

He definitely can. He is likely to win Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin which is enough to get him over the line. He could also take Arizona and Georgia.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 04/11/2020 14:03

Wow - last time I looked maybe my maths was a bit rubbish! Trump must be going crazy right now.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 04/11/2020 14:05

Pennsylvania is 53.8 vs 44% against though.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 04/11/2020 14:06

An yes - Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan and - doesn’t forget Hawaii!!

Notthegoldenchild · 04/11/2020 14:08

@ThatIsNotMyUsername GOING crazy? I think that ship sailed a long time ago there!

prh47bridge · 04/11/2020 14:16

They haven't counted postal votes yet. Those are expected to strongly favour Biden. Pre-election forecasts suggested that Trump needed to be 21% ahead at this stage to be sure of winning the state. Put another way, the information available suggests that they've counted about 70% of Trump's votes but less than 50% of Biden's.

Wahahahaha 🤪 very little sleep last night is gone through the ‘tired window’ into the crazy window..

LastTrainEast · 04/11/2020 14:46

I can only think that the democrats are not expecting Biden to make any actual decisions. I suppose he'll be given papers to sign and then sent back to his room to nap.

Surely in such a huge country they could find one intelligent, decent and healthy man to lead them?

Notthegoldenchild · 04/11/2020 14:47

They did but unfortunately Obama cannot get in again. God I am still not over the loss of him from the Whitehouse.

gumball37 · 04/11/2020 15:11

I think a lot of people are hoping that biden wins, then after a shirt time as president steps down because of "failing health" and Harris takes over as president...

MimiDaisy11 · 04/11/2020 18:28

It was always going to be the case that the result would look more in Trump's favour in the beginning as more democrats were voting with mail-in ballots and they are counted afterwards. That's why he came out early to declare victory as he knew it'd likely change. He'll never admit defeat. He'd rather tarnish the USA's reputation than be an honest man.
