Has Biden just lost the election?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 27/10/2020 09:22

I've just watched the news and seen Biden forget Trumps name. Not just a quick slip of the tongue and corrected, but calling him George and not knowing how to correct himself.

I absolutely don't blame him - I often struggle to remember something, or call ds1 by ds2s name. We all do it. And Biden is presumably very tired in the run up to next week.

But Trump is of course making huge capital out of this and I'm worried that voters who are wavering will swing back to Trump.

Please tell me I'm wrong!

It's a shocking state of affairs that either of these men will be President.
I'm reminded of the time when Ronald Reagan was suffering from Alzheimer's and Nancy Reagan was propping her husband up with prompts.

Friendsoftheearth · 27/10/2020 17:42

The polls have continuously managed to get it wrong with so many defining moment, Trump is in full swing having a final flourish now, and Biden is not participating anywhere near as much - as we hit the final straight, and what he is doing it is mostly virtually which does have the same impact. This should be worrying his team.

I have heard he is exhausted, but this is just the beginning - so if he is struggling now then how will he cope if he wins?

I don't think we can assume anything at all at this stage.

It is by far not even clear how long it will take if there is a court hearing at the end, could continue for months and months, if not years if we also consider the appeal processes. This is not over by a long shot regardless of the result.

LadyEloise · 27/10/2020 17:57

Je*us !!!
I've just watched it.
Was Joe Biden the best the Democrats could deliver against Donald Trump ?
I can't believe with such a large population of educated people in a country that is a world dominator that Joe was their only option.
I hope he gets in, resigns and Kamala takes over.

Joe Biden may be a very nice man ( or not ) but I think it's too late in his life for him to be President.
Who are the powers behind him ?

PerkingFaintly · 27/10/2020 17:59

Dear me, derxa. Bit of a change of tune from 2017 when you wanted Trump to be president of the UK.

Backing away now, hmm?

I'm sure Donald is devastated by your defection...

peteneras · 27/10/2020 18:20

It's all a storm in a teacup! I'm not too worried about Biden being "old". If it's anything to go by, the ex Malaysian Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad became prime minister again for the second time at the young ripe age of 93 after a lapse of 37 years when he first became prime minister. Mind you, he's not finished yet. . .

So, to put it mildly, this makes Biden a baby when it comes to the top job in politics. Grin . . .And of course, he'll beat Trump with a landslide!

Shock I can't remember saying such a thing. If I did I must have been drunk Grin

I’m hoping that the majority of America will see sence and vote Democrat. I believe that Biden’s plan is to become President then step down and hand over to Kamala Harris.

I have suggested this to several.people including american family members and they all say that what you have to put yourself through to become President is so extreme that you wouldn't do it unless you really really wanted it

Friendsoftheearth · 28/10/2020 15:55

The American people may feel duped if Biden hands over to Harris. They didn't vote for her, they voted for him. Although no one can possibly vote for him and not know that he seems to be struggling...

It all seems so dishonest, contrived and fudged. Why not simply offer a candidate that can win and lead the country?!

It will be an interesting ride next week either way.

halloweenagain · 28/10/2020 16:13

I reckon it is very unlikely Biden would do that.
It is very unusual behavior to apply for a job, get it and then pass it to someone else.
It seems particularly unlikely if you have the kind of personality that wants to compete for one of the most prestigious jobs in the world.

It does seem likely they are setting Harris up for a run in the next presidential election though.

MadameMinimes · 28/10/2020 16:41

I agree that Harris is being lined up for 2024. There’s no way he’ll win the election and then just retire. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll see out a full term, but I don’t see him handing over to her without a significant change in his health. When you are in your late 70s and 80s your health can change quite rapidly though. My grandmother was fit as a fiddle and sharp as a tack, running on a treadmill and doing an hour of yoga every single day until she got an unexpected terminal brain cancer diagnosis and was dead within a few months. She was early 80s.

HelloToMyKitty · 29/10/2020 10:44

Her campaign totally imploded in 2020 so I don’t know how the DNC think she can appeal to primary voters in 2024. She’d totally get challenged even if she was the VP.

blueangel19 · 29/10/2020 11:00

all HelloToMyKitty
It is basically corruption. The only way the radical left can get in is by playing tricks. See Podemos in Spain. The least popular choice and he is in anyway.

It is embarrassing the amount of videos where Biden is contradicting what he said in the past about policies or Kamala with the banning of fracking.

I wonder if in the US under Trump there are terrorist attacks happening like in France? Parties pushing to open borders to illegals ARE THE MOST DANGEROUS.

PerkingFaintly · 29/10/2020 11:08

Do you feel similarly embarrassed for Trump, when he contradicts what he said the previous day? Including contradicting basic factual matters, never mind changing policies?

PerkingFaintly · 29/10/2020 11:09

The least popular choice and he is in anyway.

True of Trump, too. Remember?

blueangel19 · 29/10/2020 11:09

Well if I want Trump out I find candidates that do not do what Trump do. Otherwise is called double standards

blueangel19 · 29/10/2020 11:12

True of Trump, too. Remember? He was voted in. No pushed in like they are trying to do with Kamala.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 29/10/2020 11:16

He is 77 and very frail, he has what I believe to be early onset dementia. He is not able to talk without an auto cue, and still can not remember what the name of the current president is. This is extremely damaging and alarming. He is sadly unfit for office

That is just not true - and I say that as a Biden sceptic. If you look back through his career, he has always made slips like this. He clearly has issues with word processing - just as both Bush presidents did, btw. His word-processing problems have got a bit worse with age, which is normal. Everyone experiences a slowing of recall with age, but that does not mean they have dementia or that they cannot think competently. It's similar to physical strength - no one can run as fast at 70 as they did at 20, but that doesn't mean they are incapable of running.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 29/10/2020 11:16

@blueangel19

By 3 million less people than Clinton. Shame the electoral college is so ridiculous.

You're all over Mumsnet lately telling us that Biden is senile and Trump a dead cert to win.

I know you are wrong on the former and hope you are very wrong on the latter.

StealthPolarBear · 29/10/2020 11:17

And in what way would dementia, at the age of almost 80, be early onset

Nikori · 29/10/2020 11:21

I’m sure this has been said already but during the candidate nominations, polls consistently said that Biden was their best bet for beating Trump and that is the main reason he was chosen.

There are a lot of Republicans who want Trump out. They may not say this publicly but they are working hard and pulling strings to leak stories to the press. It wouldn’t surprise me if even Pence voted for Biden. I really don’t see Trump winning.

blueangel19 · 29/10/2020 11:24

HoneysuckIejasmine

Point the post where I said that Trump will win?

PerkingFaintly · 29/10/2020 11:25

I'm actually OK with politicians who change their mind when the facts change, or when their understanding deepens. Or who refine things to be more nuanced.

Trump straight out lies about what he said the day before, on camera. Still, if that's what floats your boat, you can vote for that behaviour. Millions will.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 29/10/2020 11:28

I believe that Biden’s plan is to become President then step down and hand over to Kamala Harris

Absolutely no way that this is the plan. It would destroy the Democrats' credibility as a party. Biden may well be expecting to serve only 1 term, but I don't believe he has any intention of handing over before that. Aside from the effect on his party, politicians have big egos. He is running for president because he wants to be president.

DorisDaisyMay · 29/10/2020 11:33

I am definitely for the Trojan horse theory. Nothing else makes sense. He might be running because he wants to be president but He doesn’t run the party.

The party runs the party and the party will always do what is best for the party. (Powerful People Handbook 101) (I just made that up!)
