Asylum seeker from Uganda, found dead in a Govan flat after losing her leave to remain and as a result, her job.

I think this is horrific.

Just to clarify, we don’t have inquests in Scotland and it doesn’t fit the criteria for a Fatal Accident Enquiry. It will be a report submitted to the PF then any direction and instruction from there on.

But no public inquest.

Hmmph · 25/08/2020 17:05

Horrific story, whatever her cause of death. Thank goodness someone heard her baby crying.

She had contacted the charity a few weeks before her death, so hopefully they had been helping her.

However, we shouldn’t have people who have to depend on charity (including food banks) to survive.

nanbread · 25/08/2020 17:05

Even if she was an illegal immigrant whatever that is, there but for the grace of God go you, and I, and the rest of us lucky enough to be born into relative privilege.

hibbledobble · 25/08/2020 17:06

Her death is tragic, however the cause is unknown. It is in poor taste to speculate

Ellamiss · 25/08/2020 17:06

@Gancanny yes I read that. The procurator fiscal is investigating the death which has been described as unexplained. It does not say that she starved to death though and I am not going to jump on any bandwagon until the facts are known.
She had applied for housing just a week previously and the charity said that she was high priority

That doesn’t mean I don’t find the whole situation very sad and very unfair. The baby is living with his Dad now I have just read too and is recovered.

maddiemookins16mum · 25/08/2020 17:07

It’s truly very sad. However, the child is being looked after now by his father.
Where was he before she died?
We don’t know all the information yet.

Hmmph · 25/08/2020 17:07

@RunningAwaywiththeCircus

Me for a start. ‘Illegal immigrant found dead in flat, cause of death unknown’ is more appropriate at this stage.

Me too. Using an individual tragedy to push a wider agenda about the asylum system is crass and facile.

It is self-evident that not everyone who applies for leave to remain in the UK will succeed.

And if they don’t succeed, we cut them off and leave them to starve?
Hepcat75 · 25/08/2020 17:07

FFS. She'd had a job, before her right to remain was rescinded. Then she'd relied on the church and food banks. Not exactly playing the system, was she?

Chriiiiiiist!!!!!! What has made you so angry in life to spread that much disrespect and hate?

Your anger is better thrown at the gov, rampant inequality, lack of social mobility, etc. Hating on 'illegal immigrants' as the cuase of all social ills is punching down. Punching down is the sign of a real asshole.

Mittens030869 · 25/08/2020 17:08

@nanbread I completely agree with you. It's horrific. Sad

oakleaffy · 25/08/2020 17:09

Dear God.
That poor young mother and her poor Son - He will be damaged for ever by this,What a ghastly thing to happen.
No ''lessons will be learned'', and ''nothing will change''.

nogooddeedgoesunpunished · 25/08/2020 17:10

A baby was found hungry next to it's dead mother. That surely is something nobody would want ? Forget the politics. A mother died/ slipped into unconsciousness knowing her child was alone with her. That is probably every mother's worst nightmare

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/08/2020 17:10

"Friends and relatives became concerned for their welfare when communication with Ms Baguma ceased on Tuesday 18 August"

It's not clear if any of the "friends and relatives" were nearby, but I'm surprised if nobody visited to check on her

Dreadful outcome of course, but as PPs have said it might be wise not to assume anything until more is known

BrutusMcDogface · 25/08/2020 17:13

This, with fucking bells on. I hope the 20 percent who disagree never find themselves in this kind of hardship. (Or wait....maybe I don’t.)

nicky7654 · 25/08/2020 17:13

It's sad but thousands go without food in the UK. Thousands sleep on street corners and beg for small bits of food and cash. Many turn to alcohol to cope and thousands get absolutely no help from the Government.

Nolooker · 25/08/2020 17:14

So so sad.

formerbabe · 25/08/2020 17:15

Can't believe anyone would write, 'its sad, but'

Gingernaut · 25/08/2020 17:17

It's like something out of Victorian times.

oakleaffy · 25/08/2020 17:18

@Itsjustabitofbanter

How did the mother die though? The way this is written implies she starved to death from lack of money. It doesn’t mention a cause of death though
Her cause of death will be known in due course.

It isn't up to us to second guess in this tragic case.

Pisces3211 · 25/08/2020 17:19

Really really sad. Poor woman and poor baby Flowers

Ignoring tragedy to push a wider agenda on asylum seeking is despicable and abhorrant.

Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 25/08/2020 17:19

She had been working legally, but then the visa ran out or something like that - and so she lost her job - and yes, she was starving, when she contacted a charity a couple of weeks ago. Such a shame.

loobyloo1234 · 25/08/2020 17:20

This really is just awful. We have become a nation of self serving ignoramus' (mainly the Government)

One less person for Priti to worry about though hey? Gross

Ellamiss · 25/08/2020 17:21

@Gingernaut I am genuinely confused and really, really not trying to be goady but are you implying that the mum
died of starvation? Because the early statement said that she had ‘health problems’, so that could be anything. I am wary of the motivation of some posts like this sometimes.
