Asylum seeker from Uganda, found dead in a Govan flat after losing her leave to remain and as a result, her job.

I think this is horrific.

True Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlamds, Spain, Portugal, and Italy were considerably worse when they took a country

And let’s not forget Japan, China and Turkey.

AuntyPasta · 25/08/2020 19:21

This was going to happen

The government also refused to help those who can legally work but lost their jobs during lockdown.

They don’t give a fuck.

I am so ashamed
and angry

sqirrelfriends · 25/08/2020 19:24

I read this earlier today and it made me feel sick. That poor woman, and her poor poor baby.

AuntyPasta · 25/08/2020 19:26

It’s good to be ashamed and angry. If I ever reach the stage where I need to see someone’s papers before I can judge if they’re worthy of my compassion, like some posters on here, I’ve failed as a human being.

Wow! been deleted for using the c-word. Is it banned now?

AuntyPasta · 25/08/2020 19:29

I didn’t see your post but personal attacks are banned, so calling someone a cunt is not ok.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 25/08/2020 19:32

@FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue

People are completely making up in their heads that she 'starved to death'. The cause of death is unknown, and the wording:

A police spokesperson said her death is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.

is often used when there has been a suicide. The baby might well have been starving because he or she had been alone after the mother died, and that quote came from someone from a housing action charity, not police or hospital, etc.

Of course it's a tragedy that any child should lose their mother. Very sad.

Yes it's like everyone's just decided she starved to death through neglect of the UK government. People really do just make it up as they go along.

The poor child, thank God neighbours heard the cries and did something.

soontobe6 · 25/08/2020 19:33

So incredibly sad. I am feeling utterly ashamed that tonight I am going to eat out with a government backed scheme when so many in our wealthy country go hungry.
I have just made a donation to the Refugee Council and would urge if you are in a position where you could be generous to consider doing so.

StillWeRise · 25/08/2020 19:36

we really need a new Charles Dickens

... Whether it's death from suicide or starvation / insufficient food to manage diabetes, no heat over winter, homelessness ... people of all races may need help to survive when their money is cut off and they are at their most vulnerable
Namara · 25/08/2020 19:50

@Hmmph

Horrific story, whatever her cause of death. Thank goodness someone heard her baby crying.

She had contacted the charity a few weeks before her death, so hopefully they had been helping her.

However, we shouldn’t have people who have to depend on charity (including food banks) to survive.

Yes. We shouldn't have people who have to depend on charity food banks to survive.

RIP. I'm so glad the baby was saved.

AuntyPasta · 25/08/2020 19:50

The ‘hostile environment’, removing the social welfare safety net and expecting charities to cover essential services are all deliberate policy decisions.

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 25/08/2020 19:52

This made me cry , horrific. I really hope he is never told what happened. Heartbreaking and should not happen.

GreyGardens88 · 25/08/2020 19:53

What's going on in Uganda that she was claiming asylum from?

God almighty some the replies here....my ex DH's family are English and I used to be appalled by some of their opinions and attitudes, I see that it is in fact common to think this way. I actually feel like I'm going to vomit now you heartless and hateful people

Namara · 25/08/2020 20:15

Quite a few people - of different races - have already starved to death in this country due to the government's policies.

Here's one case where the man weighed 4 and a half stones -

www.google.com/amp/s/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/family-man-who-starved-death-17827261.amp

In no way does this take away from this poor lady and her son.

If it is determined that she did starve, then there are no words.

For those talking of food banks. She had been to food banks.

Charity is not the answer. A functioning welfare system is.

Yes I'm appalled too by the attitudes of some of us in the UK too. Not all. A sizeable amount through.
AlwaysLatte · 25/08/2020 20:20

This should never have happened. And precisely because it did it should 1000% never happen again. I hope lessons will be learned so that the most vulnerable are protected from horrors like this in the future.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 25/08/2020 20:23

' if it is determined that she did starve, then there are no words'.

Exactly, if!!!. Weve no idea if she had health problems and if the child was starving as they'd been left alone for a period of time. Wait and see before condemning the system.

HeronLanyon · 25/08/2020 20:32

Apologies all - I was one who read a story (think it was bbc?) and read destitute with a starving baby and I think I thought she had starved.all my other comments I stand by. Whatever the cause of death she and her baby were clearly vulnerable and were failed by our systems. A matter of shame as so many others let down are too.
Rip Mercy.

AgentCooper · 25/08/2020 20:38

My friend knew this woman. She went to a baby/toddler group where she met her and her wee boy. Mercy had health problems which were often debilitating but she was clearly just left to get on with it. Failures at every level. This boils my blood. Glasgow is not the richest city in the world but a shocking number of our citizens live in horrendous poverty and neglect which should not be happening.

Oh for crying out loud, that's awful. My heart is breaking for this woman who tries to do her best for her baby, going along to a mother and baby group (which I think is quite brave) and ends up dead with her child alongside her. Awful. Just absolutely fucking awful.
