Asylum seekers in small boats.

What is so dreadful about France that somebody would put unaccompanied children in a dingy and send them to England? I just can't begin to imagine what is going on. Is it a brutal regime in other European countries?

I should add that this isn't some racist rant. I understand that England and English is a draw for many, they may have relatives here and so on.

Young men are not automatically dangerous or dreadful

They are definitely much more likely to cause problems than women or elderly people.

If a country is so unsafe, why the imbalance towards young males?

No country for young men, but apparently fine for women and elderly people 🙄

Itisbetter · 17/08/2020 22:48

Because the young men are recruited to fight at home, because they hope to send money home when they can work, because mothers cannot stop their young boys from going but can hold their daughters close, because the girls are caught along the way.....

How would the elderly or weak survive this journey without extraordinary luck and funds.

MangoFeverDream · 18/08/2020 11:18

That’s why any reasonable country would turn these chancers back and select the neediest cases from actual refugee camps after assessing their cases.

I recall reading a Guardian article years ago that was supposed to bolster my support of these large-scale migrant movements (I had a neutral to positive view of the situation then). Basically the guy they interviewed said that his parents had been robbed of everything and his sisters raped.

I thought ... what are you doing here, leaving them behind like that? They should be the ones we bring to our shores, not an able-bodied young man.

Changed my views in an instant.

Itisbetter · 18/08/2020 13:21

Do you have young teenage boys @MangoFeverDream ??? I’m honestly amazed you would think watching their sisters raped and family terrorised was a better option for their families. Have you forgotten these are people?

Ylvamoon · 18/08/2020 13:53

The whole issue with young men is that they are raised with different values and morals especially when it comes to women and family. They might be amicable values but they are not the same as ours, throw religion into the mix and I fear for our young girls.

MangoFeverDream · 18/08/2020 14:01

I have much more sympathy for his sisters who were actually raped and he did nothing but run away and used their tragedy to gain sympathy. No.

Xenia · 18/08/2020 14:47

It is a complex issue but the bottom line is they are safe in france and choose to break the law and put young children at risk and feed the traffickers' bank accounts, thus making even more people risk death in what is a very dangerous stretch of water. If we could return them to the safety of France the same day that would be a good start.

Itisbetter · 18/08/2020 14:52

Shock I would imagine he’d be dead if he’d tried to intervene, but I guess that’s the difference between real life and fantasy.

@Yivamoon is it Muslims you fear? Sad. Please don’t. There are good and bad in all countries.

Baaaahhhhh · 18/08/2020 14:59

Several recent interviews have also highlighted many of these "asylum seekers" have already spent years in Germany or France, or Italy, some have even been working, had houses, communities, but have decided to move on, and then to try to claim asylum in UK. Why? They are no longer asylum seekers fleeing for their lives, they have already set up lives in other countries, but decided for some reason they didn't like it there and to try somewhere else. For me, this automatically removes them from the asylum category, and makes them purely economic migrants.

randomer · 18/08/2020 15:27

What utter nonsense. Young men? Which ones? Muslims? White ones or non white ones?

@Baaaahhhhh, do you have a link to these interviews please?

randomer It was on BBC news the other night..... one of the reporters went to interview some of the people waiting to get on to boats.

Itisbetter · 18/08/2020 16:05

@Baaaahhhhh I found this from earlier this week but it doesn’t seem as you describe???

<a class="break-all" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-53721146?intlink_from_url=www.bbc.co.uk/news/topics/cg41ylwvxmdt/refugees-and-asylum-seekers&link_location=live-reporting-story" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-53721146?intlink_from_url=www.bbc.co.uk/news/topics/cg41ylwvxmdt/refugees-and-asylum-seekers&link_location=live-reporting-story

randomer · 18/08/2020 16:14

So a reporter " on the BBC the other night" spoke to people who were well established in other European contries with houses and jobs but decided to cross the channel in a dingy?

On arrival they would pretend to be asylum seekers. In the UK asylum seekers live in places not fit for a dog and are given a tiny amount to live on. They are not permitted to work. They can be moved at any moment, thereby destroying any support network they may have and are often housed on the fringes of towns or cities in appalling accomodation.

I think there’s a misunderstanding on some people’s part as to how things work. You have to be in the country to ask for asylum. So you either sneak in, or you lie and come on a different visa and then apply once you’re here. Once you say I want asylum there are hoops to jump through and it can be MANY years before you even get refugee status (so can get benefits/work). If there was an easier safer way people would take it. I personally think that’s what we should focus on. Make safe routes to sanctuary don’t make it ever harder and more dangerous to get there.

Baaaahhhhh · 18/08/2020 16:30

Holds hands up in apology - It was the Daily Mail Blush. I obviously conflated this article and the BBC one, and they became one and the same.

DGRossetti · 18/08/2020 16:39

For me, this automatically removes them from the asylum category, and makes them purely economic migrants.

It really doesn't matter if they are all called Brian. It's no help for anyone seeking a solution, since the UK isn't able to return anyone seeking asylum to any destination without that destinations consent. That's before you factor in the fact that it would be immoral and (currently) illegal to try to return them back to a destination which will accept them just in order to torture and execute them.

And for real asylum seekers - people fleeing horrific regimes and crimes, the choice between a British jail, and an unmarked grave doesn't really need much brainpower.

randomer · 18/08/2020 16:43

@Baaaahhhhh, there appears to be virtually no connection between what you reported and this article?

OP posts:
Ylvamoon · 18/08/2020 16:54

@randomer - it's not nonsense, different cultures, values and norms can be a problem when it comes to male migrants.
Many of them come from countries where women are 2nd class citizens. They often don't have respect for girls / young women that are not in their immediate family.
Unpopular thinking but close to the truth.

@Itisbetter - I haven't singled out any specific religion, what you choose to interpret into my statement is entirely up to you. (And it's sad and eye opening the way people on here think. )

Itisbetter · 18/08/2020 17:01

I asked you a question @Yivamoon (which you didn’t answer). Unpopular thinking but close to the truth. Not at all, this is fairly common thinking from people with little or no experience of other cultures. Which countries/ethnicities/religions DO you find problematic? What are you basing those ideas on?

Xenia · 18/08/2020 17:24

Come on there are loads of examples. It isl ike Victorian England for some of these men - anti gay, want women to stay at home and cover up etc etc. Egypt for example has a huge issue with groping women much worse than the UK and see this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_sexual_assault_in_Egypt.

Also large numbers of unattached men with no family members just about always cause trouble in all countries places and times (and yes I have 3 sons and they are lovely young men but they are given stability by mothers, wives, girl friends).

For those saying asylum seekers cannot work lots do disappear and then breach the rules.

We have about 1m illegal people in the UK (and we can work that out even though things like testing sewage amazingly) and also 16m more people here than when I was born and are getting quite crowded - well 16m more crowded than during my childhood anyway.

randomer · 18/08/2020 17:49

I despair of the ridiculous , sweeping statements being made here. The same old chesnuts trotted out.
We have ....groping in Egypt, people who choose to leave a job and home in Germany to become an asylum seeker in the UK, migrant/immigrant/refugee/asylum seeker/economic migrant used inter changeably.

Ylvamoon · 18/08/2020 18:08

@Itisbetter - I am thinking of countries- many on the middle east - where I as a woman could not travel alone, countries where I as a woman would have to adopt the local dress code in order to go out and about.

Men coming from those countries ( including Pakistan Afghanistan, Yemen ...) are hardly used to our way of thinking. They are brought up in a different society with a different order.

Itisbetter · 18/08/2020 18:11

@Xenia sounds remarkably similar to Westminster, but then there are misogynists, sexists, racists etc everywhere. I would suggest that “all foreign men are groping rapists” is about as accurate as “all white British girls are sluts”....that shit is trotted out by the hard of thinking and I’m afraid they appear to be everywhere.

Itisbetter · 18/08/2020 18:12

Do you know any @Yivamoon?

randomer · 18/08/2020 19:30

How on earth do people get away with these posts?
