critical thinking and common sense? Dear god, hunker is right. There are plants with access to keyboards.

KeirHardAitch · 11/09/2007 23:39

lil made an excellent poiint earlier, which has really shaken me. isn't is utterly frightening that we turn on the parents? that could be any of us out there. whether you'd leave your kids on hols or not, we put them in situations every day where they are not 100% safe, and we'd have to live with the consequences if something went wrong.

Blandmum · 11/09/2007 23:40

For god's sake people have been salivating over these threads for months

What on earth is there to 'discuss'

What possible good doe thes 'discussions' do?

Would any of you want to have these discussions if this poor child's parents were in the room?

How can going over this again and again possibly be a good thing?

Do these people enjoy vacarious grief of something?

NappiesGermaineGreerGalore · 11/09/2007 23:40

oh come on minority, if it were really a tiny minority and a couple of threads, would SO many people be up in arms about it? derrr

GessGalloway · 11/09/2007 23:42

yes aitch/lil that is true. I left the room today to answer the phone and ds3 had a knife in the toaster (which was plugged in).

GessGalloway · 11/09/2007 23:42

but tbh I'd rather discuss that under a different thread title iyswim.

minorityrules · 11/09/2007 23:46

177 people signed the 'i don't agree/not in my name' thread (that's what someone said anyway)

How members does mumsnet have? How many were actualy involved tonight..20? 30?

not a majority

If sky news and the tabloids come out with a newish storyline, you really expect people to ignore it and never mention it? It won't happen

NappiesGermaineGreerGalore · 11/09/2007 23:48

i really dont know coz i dont read em but ill wager the ghoulish threads dont have too mnay different posters on them either...

and i think a few more than 20-30 tonight.

Blandmum · 11/09/2007 23:49

not if it is a mde up 'story', I think people should ignore it.

No one objects to people commenting on real news.

But they don't comment on news they speculate on rummour and gossip.

And that is the difference.

people commented on the sad *news that Annita Roddic died yesterday. they didn't turn it into a sick ghoul fest of recrimination

KeirHardAitch · 11/09/2007 23:52

actually it was 177 very early on, when the list was first written out. as you well know the list kept growing until the thread topped out, so using that figure is disingenous in the extreme.

GessGalloway · 11/09/2007 23:54

177 out of how many regular posters?

minorityrules · 11/09/2007 23:56

MB unfortunately, in this case, real news/fake news is getting mixed up

How s Joe bloggs on the street supposed to know what is true and what is isn't when it is reported as fact?

Not everyone understands how the media works

And to be able to come on hear and question it and find out what others think is a good thing in the main

Now, some will be scared to say 'how does that work then' or 'it doesn't make sense' or fear of being told to shut up you weirdo

Lil · 11/09/2007 23:57

Gess seriously I wanted to discuss the media and peoples attitude to mums, but if I start a new thread we'll just get people shouting at us to stop discussing 'that story'.

but there's important stuff coming out of this that has nothing to do with vile sensationalism.

PLEASE CAN WE HAVE AN ADULT CONVERSATION..

Blandmum · 11/09/2007 23:59

well as sure as shit smells, Joe blogs isn't going to sort or real nes from crap on these threads.

Really, why do you want do discuss it?

Serious question.

It isn't Miss Marple.

This is real life.

If the parents were in the room, would you ask them?

Because we are in a very public room here

AnnieBesant · 12/09/2007 00:00

I agree with you lil. There are important and interesting issues coming out of this. It would be a shame not to be able to discuss them because some people are more interested in gossip and speculation.

Blandmum · 12/09/2007 00:01

What Improtanmt 'stuff'? what you do need to know. How is it going to affect your life for the better?

Ir the maccans?

This isn't a political issue that you could campaign on.

Or an ecological issue that you could do soemthing about.

You and I can't do anything. So what on earth do you 'need' to discuss?

KeirHardAitch · 12/09/2007 00:03

exactly annie. your idea is a much more 'mn' way of looking at this issue, but unfortunately the gogglers have wrecked any chance of having that discussion.
it was a lot more than 177, gess, but i don't know out of how many posting that night altogether. a LOT of regulars, that's for sure, put their name to it.

Lil · 12/09/2007 00:03

sob, sob - do you read other peoples post mb? could you at least deign to read down the thread.

KeirHardAitch · 12/09/2007 00:05

the issue of how any of us could fuck up as parents and have the world's press camping on our doorstep and harpies on websites baying for our blood, MB. that seems to me a more fruitful area for discussion, but it won't happen.

minorityrules · 12/09/2007 00:05

I'm not discussing it anymore, I am discussing someones right too

MB,did you read the more recent threads?

They weren't ALL speculatation and gossip, they were discussing the medias speculation and gossip and mot were saying how stupid the media is

That is a good thing, if the only the 2 people (i saw) learnt not to trust sky news, then it was worth a discussion

AnnieBesant · 12/09/2007 00:05

Lil's earlier point about how quickly the media can turn on the parents. On the mother in particular. I think it is interesting, and important. I think it has wider implications than this story.

KeirHardAitch · 12/09/2007 00:06

lil... mb's been busy today, with some shit stuff, she maybe missed it that's all.

SueBaroo · 12/09/2007 00:06

AnnieBesant, I completely agree. That is a very interesting part of this whole thing. In a very troubling way.

SueBaroo · 12/09/2007 00:07

beats self with leeks for posting

CitizenCarmenere · 12/09/2007 00:08

Can I just ask on here something to the posters who like to post on these threads. When this tragic affair is over, will you still want to visit mn?
