disinterested means impartial, actually, I think you mean lack of interest.

minorityrules · 11/09/2007 18:51

In the last hour, the last 10 posts by one have been from people not wanting anyone to talk about it???

If you left it alone, it would be way down the page

I really don't get it

LittleBella · 11/09/2007 18:53

Oh God we haven't got to argue wiht them have we?

I tried that all day saturday and ended up screaming at the computer screen and staying away from MN for two days.

Looks like my swearing tactics won't work either, judging by the deleted post!

Somebody patient will have to argue with them, I've done my bit

ruty · 11/09/2007 18:57

[i was going to say that edam but then i checked in the online dictionary and a new meaning has been added, presumably because so many people were using it in that way]

drosophila · 11/09/2007 19:01

Exactly just walk away. Don't look. My view is innocent until proven guilty but I don't get upset at idle speculation. I would be mightily upset if I were connected to the case in any way but otherwise it is one of the countless news stories (many of which are tragic) that people speculate about.

BBBee · 11/09/2007 20:26

I used 'disinterested' as a kind of word play on 'disgusted'. Glad you are so careful to get my facts right.

anyway carry on - am sure sky news will have something else coming up.

maisym · 11/09/2007 21:33

WendyWeber · 11/09/2007 21:40

I just came across the following on aol news - please look v carefully at the bits I've put in italics:

WendyWeber · 11/09/2007 21:41

(Apologies for bumping this up again by the way but that aol bit made me mad)

LittleBella · 11/09/2007 21:42

You might as well bump it Wendy, otherwise it will only be bumped by someone saying something stupid.

mumsville · 11/09/2007 21:45

Speculation is speculation. Facts are facts and thank to truly awful media handling we have relatively few.

My DNA is pretty everywhere I go, as is yours.

The family have been allowed to leave the country.

The Portugese police are under wordwide pressure to find the little girl.

coverage at the beginning was sympathetic - only now the tide is turning people are crawling out of the woodwork to slate the mum (very predictable).

Whatever is really going on, let's just keep a hope in our hearts for the little girl.

People can discuss what they like. Who cares is MN gets a bad name - it's all publicity for them. MN doesn't represent me at all.

minorityrules · 11/09/2007 22:20

If the papers are reporting it and the news channels are too, how are people so supposed to know what is fact and what is fiction?

They were coming on here to discuss what was out there and most were agreeing that it wasnt making any sense.

Only a tiny few were veering off and only one that I can remember was adament it was all true (cos her Dad taught her)

The discussions of late weren't nasty and this reaction is overkill, especially from the band wagon jumpers, that started off by saying "I aven't read any of it but its disgusting' How do they know if they haven't read any of it???

WendyWeber · 11/09/2007 22:45

"If the papers are reporting it and the news channels are too, how are people so supposed to know what is fact and what is fiction?"

By looking at who is "reporting" it, and by reading carefully how it is reported, and what the "sources" are.

Kewcumber · 11/09/2007 22:47

the papers reporting it (all the red tops)picked it up from the Sky news report - obviously not being bothered to go out and do any actual journalism as it was a little chilly so they all stayed in and watched Sky News instead . The Sky news report clearly said "an un-named source" ie who the hell knows but certianly not official.

If you are relying on news for your opinion and the case is controversial, its always best to try checking against several sources eg one broadsheet, one tabloid and one reputable TV news channel eg BBC or Ch4.

I can see that people can't get their heads around the papers printing what it (at this stage) speculation but they often do and in this particular case I wouldn;t have thought it would take a genious to spot that the police are not (and have not) released any infomration (because it is against the law in an ongoing investigation in Portugal) and therefore most facts are leaks of dubious quality.

Wouldn't just be more sensible to wait and see what the evidence is when it finally released.

Kewcumber · 11/09/2007 22:47

all of which WW said in a much shorter post, darn her.

minorityrules · 11/09/2007 22:48

But that's my point, before the shouting and ffs's people were learning who and when to listen

If you get your blanket ban, those people will never change
