Intercepted telephone calls and emails between the McCanns and their friends have "confirmed the death of Madeleine" say police, according to one Portuguese newspaper today. The intercepts are said to have been made in a joint operation conducted by Portuguese and British police officers.
Diario de Noticias reports investigators have already concluded that the missing four-year-old was killed in the apartment where she slept in Praia da Luz.

It says that Maddy's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann (right), and their friends who were holidaying at the Ocean Club, will be brought in for further questioning. Police are awaiting new tests from the McCanns' Renault Scenic.

According to another paper, Jornal de Noticias, police want to examine inconsistencies in the statements of Kate and Gerry McCann, who were interviewed separately late into the night early on in the investigation. In particular, they want to focus on a three-hour period in which only the McCanns saw Madeleine.

Respected news agency Lusa quotes one police source saying that they think "there's light at the end of the tunnel" and that the authorities have "an idea of what could have happened" to the four-year-old.

Police have known "for a month" that Madeleine had died in the apartment, it is widely reported. The tabloid newspaper 24 Horas says that the police are looking for Madeleine's body in the sea, helped by English sniffer dogs. They have intensified searches around the nearby town of Lagos and along the Algarvian coast, it says.

Blood found in the apartment two days ago has arrived in Britain for DNA analysis: a result can be expected inside 48 hours.

Fair point Pan but it still makes me feel a bit uneasy. Sorry. Just me I guess ...

filchthemildmanneredjanitor · 10/08/2007 00:12

this whole thread is macabre.

Pan · 10/08/2007 00:17

Sorry Counting..the thread is as annoying as most of these threads are....

Countingthegreyhairs · 10/08/2007 00:18

Pan, I agree

orangehead · 10/08/2007 00:21

I agree with house, yes I feel sorry 4 parents and cant imagine what they going through but some critism needed. If my neighbours 4 eg went to are local restuarant ( 1 minute walk away) and left they children in the house I would not hestitate to ring police/social services. I do wonder as docs how many times they have heard parents say when they child has hurt themselves 'i only took my eyes off them for a 2nd'. But I dont think they can be critized for how they acted afterwards, I cant imagine thinking any rational thoughts if I was going through what they are. Im fully aware the media can print rubbish but we cant be naive to say they are not involved as sadly and I dont understand why but some parents are capable of things. I just hope somehow madeline is alive and well, and if not her family put out of this misery soon.

" do wonder as docs how many times they have heard parents say when they child has hurt themselves 'i only took my eyes off them for a 2nd'. But I dont think they can be critized for how they acted afterwards"

orangehead,
What are the ages of your children that you have never taken your eyes off them for a second. Is your child/ren mobile yet? Are you truely the perfect human being without any flaw.

Let the man with no sin cast the first stone.

Prehaps the McCanns did have a lapse in judgement, but what has happened to them is truely horrendous. The blame for this incident lies with the monster who kidnapped their daughter.

I am surprised if a dogs can detect that there was a dead body in the apppartment. Especially as its has been some months now.

I've read today's Express which carries a large article about the comments of Robert Murat's lawyer - "those bloody McCann's should just go home."

It may be a poor choice of words, but I can in some way understand why he said what he did. I am two-fold on this too, I can understand the McCanns not wanting to leave Portugal without Madeleine, there would probably be a sense of abandonment and they may be thinking along the lines of what if she turns up in Portugal again and they're not there? However, as Robert Murat's lawyer pointed out, the whole resort of Praia Da Luz is being affected very negatively by the McCann's ongoing presence there. Businesses are losing money, people are cancelling holidays because they feel it's not a safe place to take children, and let's not forget, thus far, Robert Murat is innocent. They haven't found him to be connected with Madeleine's disappearance. This man's life is being turned upside down when he may well be innocent. There is a huge media presence too which will be affecting the locals. I can imagine it's very intimidating for them. The other users of the creche that the McCann's twins have been using have been forced to complain due to the media scrum outside the creche. You can see how that would be very worrying for the other parents. Apparently (according to the Express's article) Kate McCann couldn't actually leave the creche the other day because she couldn't get past the media people. Perhaps they should take the twins home away from all that. But then it may happen here too, although there does seem to be a huge media frenzy in Portugal where the McCanns are concerned.

The thing that's crossed my mind is realistically, how long can Gerry McCann be away from his job? Is the hospital going to hold his job open, and pay him indefinately? I find that a bit odd. Surely at some stage, despite the tragic circumstances that Gerry McCann has found himself in, the hospital are going to have to review his position?

Somebody somewhere knows what happened to Madeleine that night. Somebody holds the key. Who that may be, we just don't know, and sadly, we perhaps never will.

birthdaycake · 10/08/2007 14:33

I should think that Gerry Mccann will be on sick leave due to stress and justifiably so in my opinion. Usually in the NHS staff get 6 months sick leave on full pay and then another 6 months on half pay.

tortoiseSHELL · 10/08/2007 14:35

I can't imagine that either of them could work atm anyway - impossible to concentrate (vital in a doctor), and every patient that came in would ask about Madeleine.

sauce · 10/08/2007 14:41

Have you heard about this? It's been big news here.www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id=473543&in_page_id=1811

LIZS · 10/08/2007 14:45

I mentioned it on another thread. Does seem odd and more than a passing coincidence. The Swiss don't normally admit to having criminals in their midst let alone paedophiles. It is a shame the disappearnace of that little girl didn't get the same media coverage

sauce · 10/08/2007 14:50

ha LIZS, I couldn't believe that no-one else had spotted it; seems far more probable than the sighting in Belgium but what do I know?

orangehead · 10/08/2007 15:14

really tired - kids 4 and 5, no not claiming to be perfect parent none of us can keep an eye on kids 27/4. im not medic but amount of times heard that and its true kids can can have accidents, get lost, turn very seriosly ill in a very short amount of time,as both being in the medical profession thought they would be well aware and would notleave them for 15 mins or longer.
A few months ago I put my kids to bed perfectly well a few hours lately I heard some strange noises so rang upstairs my four year had been sick whilst lying on his bed prob still half asleep and choking on it. OK now some parents might of not of heard anything even if at home, but you have more bloody chance if you are at home not at a resturant. sorry If am being unreasonable to think kids have parents for a purpose - to in thier best ability to care and protect them, bogging off to a resturant is not in yr best ability.

aloha · 10/08/2007 15:27

65% of child murders believed to be committed by parents OR someone known to the family. 16% died at the hand of strangers, with the remainder killed by someone unknown.

aloha · 10/08/2007 15:35

ie NOT 90% as is constantly claimed. Of course murder by strangers is far less likely, as small children don't go out on their own.
The stuff about the blood is rubbish of course, all this nonsense about it being sinister that it was wiped off - well what else would you do with it! Leave it there for years?? That only happens in NHS hospitals.
And the blood wasn't found by sniffer dogs, but by chemical reaction.

orangehead · 10/08/2007 15:42

If the blood is madelines it is strange it wiped of as if a stranger had taken her unlikely he/she would take time to clean if knowing parents could be back any time more likely to get out as fast as can. It could be madeline from nosebleed or something but if this the case her parents prob would of said when the blood was found. But it might not be madelines, might be wrong but I thought those chemicals could pick up blood from yrs ago if so there is alot more chance of being anyones

aloha · 10/08/2007 15:44

It will turn out to be years old. I'd bet my house on it.
The portuguese press has been vile. And if there has been police collusion in these horrible stories, then that wouldn't surprise me, frankly.

Peachy · 10/08/2007 16:42

Agree Aloha

sauce I pointed thatc ase out a day or so ago, sadly it didnt fit the mcCann bashing agenda at the time

What I dont understand is why poeple cant separate the debate about leaving her alone from the one about the kidnap- just because someone is 'wrong' on one count, doesn't automatically make them guilty on another..

LIZS · 10/08/2007 16:51

Completely agree with Aloha and Peachy . These threads have a nasty habit of turning into yet another trawl through the reported circumstances and opinions thereon rather than any real developments.

binklehasflipped · 10/08/2007 18:30

there is no proof of kidnap so far.

Peachy · 10/08/2007 18:35

1_ Portugese system means we have no way of knowing what they have proof of

  1. No proof of anything else either

  2. Innocent until proven guilty

aloha · 10/08/2007 18:36

You don't know if there is no proof, Binkle, and neither do I. However, Kate McCann has said the room was left in such a way that she knew her daughter had been taken rather than just left of her own accord, but they are gagged by Portuguese law so we don't get the details behind that statement.

binklehasflipped · 10/08/2007 18:37

agree Peachy - no proof of kidnap or anything else so far - just a missing child with no explanation to her whereabouts.
