Intercepted telephone calls and emails between the McCanns and their friends have "confirmed the death of Madeleine" say police, according to one Portuguese newspaper today. The intercepts are said to have been made in a joint operation conducted by Portuguese and British police officers.
Diario de Noticias reports investigators have already concluded that the missing four-year-old was killed in the apartment where she slept in Praia da Luz.

It says that Maddy's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann (right), and their friends who were holidaying at the Ocean Club, will be brought in for further questioning. Police are awaiting new tests from the McCanns' Renault Scenic.

According to another paper, Jornal de Noticias, police want to examine inconsistencies in the statements of Kate and Gerry McCann, who were interviewed separately late into the night early on in the investigation. In particular, they want to focus on a three-hour period in which only the McCanns saw Madeleine.

Respected news agency Lusa quotes one police source saying that they think "there's light at the end of the tunnel" and that the authorities have "an idea of what could have happened" to the four-year-old.

Police have known "for a month" that Madeleine had died in the apartment, it is widely reported. The tabloid newspaper 24 Horas says that the police are looking for Madeleine's body in the sea, helped by English sniffer dogs. They have intensified searches around the nearby town of Lagos and along the Algarvian coast, it says.

Blood found in the apartment two days ago has arrived in Britain for DNA analysis: a result can be expected inside 48 hours.

There is a very nasty campaign by the press atm. Out of respect, I don't think we should repeat their claims on MN.

loopylou6 · 09/08/2007 21:35

sorry

what a load of crap.

so the Mcanns took their family car to portugal? Is that right?

Malicious and slanderous.

SpacePuppy · 09/08/2007 21:37

They were in fact cleared two days ago, so said on BBC, I do not read tabloid sorry I do not take their journalistic attempts seriously.

foxcub · 09/08/2007 21:39

The Portugese Police should either put up or shut up.

I am appalled at their lack of professionalism .

LIZS · 09/08/2007 21:40

Sadly it seems the Portuguese press has its publicity seeking , sensationalist tabloids as much as any other country. If this were in the NOTW or Sport would you give it such credence ? Also it may lose much of the subtle nuances in translation anyway. Don't take all that they say at face value. "Leaks" could undermine any successful prosecution case and they and their "sources" will know that.

loopylou6 · 09/08/2007 21:41

i never said i believed it, or that it is 100% correct, it was just something i came across

Desiderata · 09/08/2007 21:44

Yeah, don't get all tough on loopylou, girls. She's only sharing an item she's come across, not stating any personal opinion.

beansprout · 09/08/2007 21:46

That's fine, but it is an emotive subject and I'm genuinely confused as to the point of posting these unfounded slurs.

verysweatybetty · 09/08/2007 21:46

no im not just wanted to read it im reading into bits and peices about it!

tiredemma · 09/08/2007 21:47

not getting tough on loopy- just annoyed at the article itself. Its Bollocks.

paulaplumpbottom · 09/08/2007 21:48

Why would the portugese press want to launch a smear campaign?

beansprout · 09/08/2007 21:49

Well, quite, but that's the gutter press for you.

binklehasflipped · 09/08/2007 21:50

apparently the villagers are turning on the mcCanns now and want them to leave and go home to Britain - so says Skynews...

LIZS · 09/08/2007 21:52

Murat's lawyer has been "quoted" as saying the McCanns should go home and leave well alone(Standard tonight so watch in Mail tomorrow). Allegedly no Portuguese parent has ever left their children home alone.

wannaBe · 09/08/2007 21:52

some of this was repeated on 5 live this morning, but the guy doing the talking said that while the police were definitely looking for a body now, this did not necessarily mean that the Mccanns had been implicated in Madeleine's death.

He did say that one of the reason why so many of these types of details are "leaked" is because of the secrecy laws in portugal, which prevent this information being confirmed by the police, but did say that obviously one can never be sure what info is and isn't correct.

Tbh I don't think the fact the portuguese media has turned like this comes as a huge surprise. I think it just goes to show how dangerous the media can be, and how careful one should be when getting involved with them. The Mccanns and their campaign team manipulated the media hugely to promote Madeleine's disappearance, but unfortunately when news runs out the press will often create their own agenda, and especially with Brittish police coming in and sniffer dogs combing the coast, it leaves huge room for speculation. And with vast criticism of the portuguese police in the Brittish press I don't think it's done the Mccanns any favours in the eyes of the media.

Not their fault in any way, but sadly I think the Mccanns have become the victims of their own publicity campaign.

binklehasflipped · 09/08/2007 21:56

its like doing a deal with the devil, getting involved with the press, I suppose

wannaBe · 09/08/2007 21:57

lizs I read somewhere that it's illegal in Portugal to leave children under a certain age (11 I think it was but can't remember for definite). So maybe the hostility from the locals has to do with the treatment of the family vs treatment of a local should they atttempt the same?

I certainly think that these holiday resorts that seem to promote these kinds of practices should be more aware of the laws and should make parents aware of them if they decline their babysitting/listening services.

Quattrocento · 09/08/2007 21:58

It is an absurd suggestion that those unfortunate parents had anything to do with her disappearance.

Press coverage in both Portugal (reportedly) and the UK has been decidedly odd. Frenzied almost. Both in attack and defence. Caught a few bulletins in France about it and the coverage was very minor and totally objective and dispassionate. We could do with some of that.

expatinscotland · 09/08/2007 21:58

Give it a rest, people!

It ain't over till it's over!

binklehasflipped · 09/08/2007 21:58

I think law or no law, you'd have to have a very strong (false) sense of security to leave a ground floor apartment containing your children open out of your sight (ie behind a big hedge).

loopylou6 · 09/08/2007 21:59
