For those of you who are interested - and don't want any arguing - the news update according to Sky

  • police are now looking for a man seen in a white van
  • they have an e-fit of him
  • also want to interview an american who lives locally who owns a white van and hasn't been seen for the last few days
  • reward of £1.5M has been offered by the News of the World

I wonder if they (Sky reporters) have suspected this guy for some time but perhaps haven't been able to get the Portugese Police to take it seriously enough so they are kind of forcing the issue by broadcasting everything they know about him.

I don't really know.

But I have never seen reporting like this before. Normally if someone is taken in for questionning, they report it by simply saying 'a man in his 40's has been taken in for questioning' they have never gone into this amount of detail before now. They were even showing a business card on close up and interviewing people who were giving all sorts of personal details about him.

It just seems odd.

I'm not saying SKY are wrong,It just feels as if they are perhaps taking the matter into their own hands?

Just pray for a postive outcome.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 14/05/2007 21:23

the reason they seem to be reporting it like this is because of how close he came to them, saying he was translating etc...

am afraid to say this doesn't look positive at all.

beansprout · 14/05/2007 21:24

I think Sky are v quick to report "what they are hearing" and the BBC tends to be a bit more reliable as it seems to check things first. 7/7 bombings were awful as Sky just kept reporting all sorts of stuff. We thought 10 bombs had gone off at one stage!

ScoobyDooooo · 14/05/2007 21:24

Oh no i can not believe this...I am still praying for Madeleine's safe return

My heart sank when i saw the news x

beansprout · 14/05/2007 21:24

And his mum set up that help desk?!

reece · 14/05/2007 21:25

The fact that it has been pointed out that Robert Murat has a glass eye is completely irrelevant to what is going on.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 14/05/2007 21:25

no davina the suspicians were reported a while ago by a daily mirror journalist. the reason why it's ok to report his details is because his mother confirmed to the bbc that he'd been taken in for questioning, but stressed he hadn't been arrested.

LilyLoo · 14/05/2007 21:25

Would agree to stick to BBC to avoid speculation which sky often does.

ThatBeetroot · 14/05/2007 21:25

Davina - I agree - they seem to have built a case already with not evidence apart form a dodgy eye and not seeing quite right -

The Mirror woman said he reminded her of the Soham Murderer - I just hope if the man is not guilty he is left alone

ThatBeetroot · 14/05/2007 21:26

Yes agree - stay with BBC

sweetas · 14/05/2007 21:26

sky news latest

Sky's Ian Woods spoke to a lady who has been working as a translator for Sky News, and used to know Robert Murat. Gaynor de Jesus went to school with Robert and says he enjoyed a good working relationship with the police during their investigation

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 14/05/2007 21:27

That Sky journalist reported this LAST WEEK in Britain and in Portugal! If all this is happening now, do you not think that this means that they now have REASON to take this line of investigation further?

reece · 14/05/2007 21:28

We can only all watch and see.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 14/05/2007 21:30

even on the bbc though there was quite a lot of talk about this man - they interviewed someone who knew him and said he seemed odd...

If they've drained the pool .. doesn't sound like they're looking for a positive outcome

reece · 14/05/2007 21:30

I wonder who the other person/people are that are being questioned. Why are we not getting details of them??

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 14/05/2007 21:33

Draining the pool is just another way of searching.. as they are no doubt leaving no stone unturned in the house.

What I am thinking is that they MUST have a good reason for thinking she is there

UCM · 14/05/2007 21:35

I just want to see the words 'Shes been found' somewhere.

Wolfgirl · 14/05/2007 21:35

Has anyone picked up what was said about the police dogs very early on in the search... the dogs picked up her trail then lost it only yards (cant rememebr how many) from the appartment where she was taken from. Maybe - whoever took her, made her walk, then carried her (of course, she could have been put into a car).

And the taupaulin (sorry spelling and am really tired) would only go up if they had some digging or real heavy searching to do.

I also want to mention some things that police profiles/physcologists etc say of serial killers etc. The crime more often than not occurs locally; and they always revisit the scene where they leave the body/victim.

Now please!!!!!!! I am in shreds reading all these posts, and the news everyday - just waiting. I dont want to cause anymor alarm than necessary, but things really dont look good. sorry about typing, am crying right now. Just like all of you, Im praying and so so hoping for some good news. but this man just gives me the shivers and all the signs of what the police pyscologists might say of him. HOrrible.

quietmouse · 14/05/2007 21:37

they've been in there hours now - it's only single storey remember - surely she can't be there?

Marne · 14/05/2007 21:37

The taupauling is up over the swimming pool i think.

reece · 14/05/2007 21:38

A number of people have commented on how the police work very secretly, not giving anything away until necessary.
There are so many questions we all need answers to......If its torture for us imagine how the parents feel. I can't think of anything worse.

quietmouse · 14/05/2007 21:39

f*cking bastard. I'm sorry but what bloody right has someone got to take someone else's child??

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 14/05/2007 21:39

They must have, at the very least, have found something that they are pretty sure is connected with Madaleine. Musn't they?

LilyLoo · 14/05/2007 21:40

Wolfgirl wouldn't presume it all so bad at the moment. I think the tarpaulin would be just to keep the press intrusion away. He has only been taken in for questioning i thnik it is too soon to guess the outcome.

ToughDaddy · 14/05/2007 21:40

i don't like alot of the Sky talk. Mentioning Soham etc is very insensitive given that no one has been arrested.
