For those of you who are interested - and don't want any arguing - the news update according to Sky

  • police are now looking for a man seen in a white van
  • they have an e-fit of him
  • also want to interview an american who lives locally who owns a white van and hasn't been seen for the last few days
  • reward of £1.5M has been offered by the News of the World

Hope there are some proper developments overnight.

Fingers crossed Madeleine can be found safe and re-united with her parents and siblings.

Im off to hug and kiss my girls before heading to bed.

Goodnight all.

TeeJaye · 15/05/2007 23:54

For those unconvinced that this has nothing to do with Madeleine's looks

Missing white woman syndrome

And a link to speculation about paedophile images found at Murat's home - this quote is roughly half way down the page:

"Reports on Portuguese television stated that suspected paedophile images have been found at Mr Murat's home."

It's all just speculation but at the end of the day, so is most of the information we've heard since Madeleine went missing.

JoolsToo · 16/05/2007 00:08

sorry beety (youprobably won't come back and see this )

The ex-Scotland Yard bloke (was on Jeremy Vine today) had been quoted in the newspapers as saying that he'd met Murat and was suspicious about him.

In actual fact - he had met him but NOT thought him suspicious and took him face value.

He did add, that Murat had told him that he (Murat) had been kept updated with news about Madeleine by his (Murat's!) daughter in the UK. It is only recently that Scotland Yard chap learned that Murat's daughter is actually only 4 and of course if he'd known this it would have been a red flag!

hope that sorts it out!

JoolsToo · 16/05/2007 00:08

er, that still sounds a bit confused but I know what I mean

ruty · 16/05/2007 01:31

that was a truly terrifying link MP. I had no idea.

Aloha · 16/05/2007 01:37

It has since been quite widely debunked, however. Even the original article includes a quote from a headmaster saying the children are probably just in other schools.

Aloha · 16/05/2007 01:57

I do agree that some families are more media friendly than others though. It is more complex than black v white. Think of Damilola Taylor.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/05/2007 02:06

am hoping beyond hope they find her tomorrow.

ThatBeetroot · 16/05/2007 03:27

thanks Jools

Flumpybumpy · 16/05/2007 09:34

What are your feelings on the guy they have named as a suspect?? It seems like a bit like Ian Huntly/Holly & Jessica case to me. The guy being really helpful at the beginning talking to police etc.....

(please don't shoot me down in flame if this is already under debate on another thread, I looked but couldn't find)

FB x

ChocolateFace · 16/05/2007 09:42

This has already been mentioned on this thread, FB.

I have my own views on Murat, but as he has not yet been found guilty of anything, it's probably best if we don't tear the man to pieces.

quietmouse · 16/05/2007 09:43

I got had a go at last night, but I do think him, and the other two questioned looking very suspicious. The likeness to the CCTV footage etc....

I just find it strange that he has been officially named as a suspect but is allowed to go about his business (and them too)

Wolfgirl · 16/05/2007 09:44

Morning all. I have a question. Or a hope really. Can we assume that the Portugese police are still covering other options and not just focussing on this murat bloke? Ive not seen/heard much to that end.

Flumpybumpy · 16/05/2007 09:51

thanks CM I did scroll down but obviously not far emough!

My only thought is that if he is guilty then where is she???

If not, then I hope they are not using all their time on him and are still searching elsewhere.

Flumpybumpy · 16/05/2007 09:51

WG - x post, same thoughts!!

laughsalot · 16/05/2007 10:05

HERE YOU GO

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 16/05/2007 10:21

The police haven?t said what they are/aren?t investigating but I imagine they know what they?re doing.

As for Robert Murat, I wonder if people think he ?looks suspicious? because he?s been named as a suspect. I do think that people have a view of someone based on what we know about them iyswim, so suspect = suspicious-looking. If he had been reported to be very helpful to the media, and instrumental in helping in the search, people would have a different view of him, and I think it?s highly doubtful people would be saying ?that translator bloke looks suspicious to me.?.

The reason he?s still free is because police don?t have enough evidence to arrest him. It?s very similar in this country as well, police can arrest someone, but if they don?t have enough evidence to charge them then they have to be released. How many times do we hear on the news that ?police have applied for extra time to question the suspect in the case of x.?? and if not enough evidence is gathered in 72 hours then the police have to let that suspect go on police bale while they continue their enquiries. It?s no different in this situation, apart from that the terminology appears to be different.

The reason why the other two are ?allowed to go about their business? is because they?ve not been arrested or even named as suspects. Just because they?ve been questioned doesn?t mean that they?re suspects. If you were closely involved with someone suspected of committing a crime you too would be questioned, but that doesn?t make you guilty by association.

noddyholder · 16/05/2007 10:30

Colin Stagg was demonised on similar criteria Seeming 'odd' and 'creepy'and just being in the locality.I think the police and media will surely have to learn from this and take appropriate action regarding the media circus surrounding serious issues.Especially if he is innocent

nailpolish · 16/05/2007 10:30

but wannabe, he was reported to the police because he was suspicious looking

nailpolish · 16/05/2007 10:31

or was at least acting suspicious

i suppose there is a difference

Wolfgirl · 16/05/2007 10:38

In the very early days of her disappearance, there were in excess of 150 officers on the case. That has been scaled down. But, we now have interpol and of course our UK force involved. I guess Im answering my own query - more out of what I presume would be the natural thing to do, and that is, that they would most definately have broken up into teams, and be exploring every avenue - that would involve local searches, nationwide searches and international searches; they would also (again I assume) be categorising their searches - abduction for a childless couple, pedo whatsits (cant spell it) .... etc.

Because of there judicial law they cannot reveal anything more of their investigations, while the world looks on - desperate for information.

They have given minimal data about RM, and most of it, as we know is speculation, fuelled by media cowboys such as SKY. And we swallow it, digest it, analyse - but at the end of the day, we have no more idea what is going on than we did yesterday. And at the end of the day - little Madeleine is still missing.

I have/had taken refuge in the fathers statement that he believes she is alive, safe and being looked after. I have to wonder and have wondered why he would make such a statement. First off, the obvious answer is that he is in Hope. The second would be that he has be councilled and advised of what possible scenario's Madeleine could be under. Because this nature of crime is so rare out there, I think he has been led to believe for the best.

Because of the threads I have been reading here yesterday, my heart has sank and I feel more and more despondent and scared for the child, thinking that she is in the clutches of monsters and she is being harmed.

I want to scream on top of a mountain for whoever has her, to release her back to her mummy. I - like the rest of the world - want this to be over. Its like hanging in some kind of limbo land, and I cant stand it. Heck, it may as well be my own child for the pain Im going through. All the questions, watching constantly for new news. You get the picture.

I do wish we could however, keep this thread to what the title says, new updates. Can we today, try to not scrap at each other, hold back the need to overpower each other just becasue we have a diff. opinion?

Any chance? xx

laughsalot · 16/05/2007 10:39

thank you flumpy- i have downloaded the poster , i shall stick it in the car and hope.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 16/05/2007 10:53

They had the family on 5 live earlier, I caught a conversation with the aunt, and she said that the reason they are being positive is because of the way they have been counselled into thinking that until they have proof that something unthinkable has happened to Madeleine they need to think positive in order to keep going iyswim.

Tbh I?m not sure if there?s really any point in having an updates only thread. Currently there are no updates, so anything that is posted on these threads is discussion, and unfortunately peoples? opinions about certain things will differ, thus leading to some more heated discussion. In light of that, maybe it would be better to just let these threads go, and to agree to stop discussing this case, and a thread can be posted if she is found.

NKF · 16/05/2007 10:57

There haven't been any real "news updates" since the child went missing. All there has been is a few details about lines of enquiry and some highly quesetionable speculation. I wondered what this thread had found to say to stay so busy but after a quick skim read I know. Nothing.
