For those of you who are interested - and don't want any arguing - the news update according to Sky

  • police are now looking for a man seen in a white van
  • they have an e-fit of him
  • also want to interview an american who lives locally who owns a white van and hasn't been seen for the last few days
  • reward of £1.5M has been offered by the News of the World
OP posts:

I don't think there is any chance of us hearing anything further tonight......

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:28

Lilyloo, I strongly feel it is unreasonable to think the media can't report on this! the police can choose how much detail they release. anything else is unfortunate. I hardly think his ex and kid are going to have a gang of vigilantes round this evening.

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:29

Georgie - yes, forgot that point.

snowwonder · 14/05/2007 22:29

the same detective bloke from before on sky news now

Georgie11 · 14/05/2007 22:29

Apologies for a typo in my earlier message, should have said 'fingers' not 'figures'

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 14/05/2007 22:30

doubt it. they said it will take time for the phorensic evidence to be confirmed, so I wouldn't be surprised if it all died down.

If they've drained a swimming pool, I wouldn't imagine it's a live child they're looking for sadly.

LilyLoo · 14/05/2007 22:30

Dinny it is highly emotional and we have no idea what other people would do with this info as the situation itself is completely surreal. I do think the media should report on it as the bbc have.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 14/05/2007 22:32

I noticed how Gaynor was contradicting herself. I commented to DH about it.

Bambiraptor · 14/05/2007 22:32

I don't think this man's name should be being used in the media or his photo being broadcasted. He may not be involved and this kind of coverage could ruin his life.
Please try not to speculate until there is actually some real information about the case.

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:32

totally agree, Lilyloo. I work for the BBC, so am biased though.

Forensic team obv spent a long time gathering evidence

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 14/05/2007 22:33

Impossible not to speculate really thought isn't it

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:33

Bambi, but how do you prevent the media coverage - that means press censorship, no?

LilyLoo · 14/05/2007 22:33

Exactly Bambi. The bbc said three people are being questioned at the moment but no names.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 14/05/2007 22:36

ah no, the bbc did name Robert Murratt, and they also played part of a chat with his mother over the hedge, albeit with no picture.

And I think it's impossible not to speculate.

But I'm not sure I want to know now when Madeleine is found.

Georgie11 · 14/05/2007 22:36

If nothing comes of the Murat villa investigation then the Portuguese way of doing things is totally justified. Without any evidence, the British media have gone against the basic principal of British law of 'innocent until proven guilty'. For goodness sake, they have tracked down an ex-school mate of Robert Murat who has talked about her horror at the thought of him committing such an act.

helenhismadwife · 14/05/2007 22:36

they have named them not the police but the journalist Robert Murat his mother Jenny Murat and a portugese man they are searching his house which is 200yards from where Madeleine went missing

quietmouse · 14/05/2007 22:37

who the hell is the third person being questioned??

quietmouse · 14/05/2007 22:37

x posts helen

Spidermama · 14/05/2007 22:38

Trial by media. Trial by Mumsnet.
Go to bed FFS!

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:38

Helen - the Murat bloke, his mother and another man being questioned?

Wolfgirl · 14/05/2007 22:38

I think all the comments - rightly or wrongly (including mine) are a need for people to just 'talk' things out. sometimes things can be said irrationaly, and yes, I agree tbh, innocent until proven guilty, and yes I also agree that the home of the x-wife and his daughter should not have been given out (if in fact it has). (I do still think we have a great police force though )

For my part, I dont retract what Ive said, it has been in speculation, and a need to just talk. we are not politicians, journalist or of any other influence, we are just mums, wanting to talk about very tragic and terrible events. And ALL wanting a good outcome for this poor child and her family.

Im off to bed, sorry all, just so tired.

xx

Bambiraptor · 14/05/2007 22:38

Speculation and media coverage do not need to include a persons name, photo, and personal details.

Georgie11 · 14/05/2007 22:41

The way they are hassling and intimidating Jenny Murat is unacceptable. I might change my mind if she is involved but surely it should be done behind closed doors before anything is established.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 14/05/2007 22:42

yes wg, but imagine if a case like this happened in this country, and all these details were released to the media, and we all speculate about them on here or to our friends or wherever, talking about where he lives, and what he's done, and who his friends are...

and then imagine 6 months down the line his trial date comes up, and suddenly you receive a letter calling you for jury service.

how, when details like this are freely released to all and sundry, can one possibly expect to have a non biased jury?

helenhismadwife · 14/05/2007 22:43

what worries me is that they have been named even though they havent been arrested and that could prejudice the search for madeleine, and any future trail etc

Also if they are innocent they are going to be hounded because some people will think there is no smoke without fire
