For those of you who are interested - and don't want any arguing - the news update according to Sky

  • police are now looking for a man seen in a white van
  • they have an e-fit of him
  • also want to interview an american who lives locally who owns a white van and hasn't been seen for the last few days
  • reward of £1.5M has been offered by the News of the World
OP posts:

Why haven't they searched before? Because they can't search a house unless they have a reason to suspect then they have to get a warrant.

Best police force in the world? I don't think so.

Why aren't they enforcing more on the Portuguese police? Because it's not their country.

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:14

they aren't in charge though, Lilyloo.

In fact, I think the journalist prob reported this bloke after seeeing what John O'Connor (the former hea of Scor Yard)'s take was on the case.

jenk1 · 14/05/2007 22:14

yes, i agree with you there, but i thought it strange that she contradicted herself twice in a 5 min interview, could just be nerves as well i guess

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:15

no, agre suspicious - like another Ian Huntley's girlfriend (can't remember her name - isn't that awful?)

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 14/05/2007 22:15

awful lot of speculation though? not wanting to go back to the Sowham murders but Ian Huntley's house wasn't searched until nearly two weeks after they disappeared, not in that way anyway. also it's not up to the UK police to "enforce" things on the portuguese police - we have no say in the laws of other countries, any more than they do in ours.

As for detective saying "he thought" - that's exactly it, he thought, he doesn't know, if he did he would have found her surely, and whatever he thought I'd hazzard a guess sky news paid him handsomely to think it.

We don't know what's going on, we don't even know if Robert Murrat was arrested or not, because in Portuguese law they're not allowed to tell so even his mother wouldn't know.

And dinny as for saying "in my mind he's guilty as hell" that's exactly why the names of accused shouldn't be published until they're found guilty, because even if he's set free without charge, there are people out there who will for ever associate him with this.

Georgie11 · 14/05/2007 22:16

I think the criticism of the Portuguese police force is totally unfounded. There are many posts that refer to the great British police but let's not forget they overlooked Holly's mobile phone sitting on Huntley's draining board and they have failed in many investigations ... this is not a time for blame it is a time for support.

If (and I hope when) the Portuguese police find Madeleine safe and well, their methods will be praised world-wide.

Once again, hopes and prayers for Madeleine's safe return

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:17

er, disagree with last statement - in many countries the onus is on the suspect to exonerate his/herself and is, in fact, guilty till proven innocent.

LilyLoo · 14/05/2007 22:17

True Dinny but like Teejaye said they can't just go round turning up everyones house in the area. To my knowledge that hasn't happened here either when children have gone missing. They can search the area but i don't think they can enter peoples property.

quietmouse · 14/05/2007 22:17

omg - was that villa seriously not searched at the beginning of the investigation???

That is basic police work, isn't it? Searching the immediate area.

Apparently this man was trying to put journalists off Madeleine being in the area and told them he thought she had been taken over the border into Spain.....

UCM · 14/05/2007 22:18

Oh god, every time I see this thread in 'active convos' I click. Dh wondered why I am up so late as i need an early night. Sounds daft - but this is the reason.

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:19

QM - hadn't realised he'd said that. anyone know what it was that lead the journalist t report him?

I fel this will be looked back on as journalists having done all the detective work the police didn't.

LilyLoo · 14/05/2007 22:20

Agree WANNABE his daughter may well have his surname. People aren't rational in these situations and this could be very awkward for him and his family now.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 14/05/2007 22:20

but quietmouse how many people on here have said that this girl has probably been taken to spain, and north africa, south africa, perhaps poland, or maybe being held in morocco until she can be smuggled into the UK. come on to some of the threads on here, and based on that info any number of mn'ers could be suspects. perhaps he has done like so many on here and elsewhere, and speculated.

quietmouse · 14/05/2007 22:20

maybe the British journalists have found out other stuff about him?....

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:21

I shouldnt worry - he'll prb be under arrest by tomorrow. unless the police (or media attention) fuck it up, that is.

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:22

I feel there is a LOT we're not being told - they have to be pretty sure to search for 14 hours and drain a pool.

mommajools · 14/05/2007 22:23

BBC said they had 3 people in custody?

also if he is in real estate then he may have keys to emoty properties

LilyLoo · 14/05/2007 22:23

or sent home and have a load of nutters at his house or his ex wife and daughters house in Norfolk.
The media have surely damaged the case already by reporting this so far like they have?

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 14/05/2007 22:24

the reason why the journalist reported him was because she felt he was just too close to the investigation, ie trying to be too involved and official-looking. In defence of the sky journalist (and I use the term journalist loosely ), he did say that often if someone has dealings with the media, they can get quite a buzz out of it as it makes them feel important, and it can lead to them thinking they're more important than they are iyswim, and he said this man might simply have done that.

And as for talk of whether he's guilty or not - I really hope none of you or your relatives are ever wrongly questioned on any matter and the details are released to the media - talk about give a dog a bad name ...

quietmouse · 14/05/2007 22:24

would British reporting of this make a difference if he was tried in Portugal though? Assuming the information has not come from the Portugese police?

Georgie11 · 14/05/2007 22:25

I think it is terrible that so many figures are being pointed at the Portuguese police and constantly comparing them to the great British police force - let's not forget the British police force did not find Holly's mobile phone sitting on Huntley's draining table and they have failed in many other investigations.

This should not be a time of blame, it should be a time of support.

If (and I hope when) the Portuguese Police force find Madeleine safe and well, they will receive world-wide praise.

Hoping and praying that Madeleine is found soon.

LilyLoo · 14/05/2007 22:27

THE BBC only saying that three people have been taken in for questionning and an appartment is being searched.

yummymummy06 · 14/05/2007 22:27

Yes I thought that about the empty properties. I really need to go to bed but don't want to miss anything. Do you think we will hear anything tonight?

Georgie11 · 14/05/2007 22:28

Dinny

There is a lot that we are not being told. It is because Portuguese law does not allow us to be told.

snowwonder · 14/05/2007 22:28
