For those of you who are interested - and don't want any arguing - the news update according to Sky

  • police are now looking for a man seen in a white van
  • they have an e-fit of him
  • also want to interview an american who lives locally who owns a white van and hasn't been seen for the last few days
  • reward of £1.5M has been offered by the News of the World

dinny _ what did the scotland yard PO say?

dinny · 14/05/2007 21:55

will find link, hang on

LilyLoo · 14/05/2007 21:56

SKY needs to bear in mind he is as likely to be innocent and to put the fact that he has been questioned across as him being guilty will be terrible for him if he has only been involved through genuine regard for her as he has a daughter the same age and was a local british / portugese speaker.

Wolfgirl · 14/05/2007 21:57

maybe then - ShinyHappyBubblyWubblyBoohoooo - he is a sad weirdo, lost his family, knew he could translate and just got nosey; then when things seemed to point his direction he got scared, out of his depth and cleared off; this might have raised their suspicions even more, hence him going to the police stn and his villa being searched. he has been acting very odd.

from a couple of days ago

dinny · 14/05/2007 21:58

if he's innocent, he has nothing to worry about.

jenk1 · 14/05/2007 21:59

that gaynor is making me feel unnervy, she said that she hadnt seen robert murat for many years and then she said that she rememered him telling her that he was a father and then again said but she hadnt seen him for many years again.
they went to school together and suddenly have met up in portugal.

dinny · 14/05/2007 21:59

who is Gaynor - another translator?

LilyLoo · 14/05/2007 22:00

But this is becoming a bit like guilty until proved innocent.

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:00

So what? In the nicest possible way, I mean.

curlysmum · 14/05/2007 22:01

God Sky imo seem so unprofessional its just like gossip they drag their interviews out for so long and they are actually given very little fact just speculation, I have to turn it over its quite awful.

LilyLoo · 14/05/2007 22:05

Yes but Dinny this may well have terrible repurcussions for him and also his family, he has a young daughter similair to Madeleine. Sadly his home and his photos have now been posted all over the news. Which rightly so if he is guilty but not on the basis of going in for questionning.

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:05

yes, Sky don't let good journalism get in the way of story

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:06

see what you are saying, Lilyloo - but, in my mind he is guilty as hell.

Georgie11 · 14/05/2007 22:07

I just hope this sensationalist reporting by both the BBC and SKY does not compromise the investigation and any subsequent arrest/conviction. The Portuguese authorities have clearly outlined their legal system and whether we agree with or not, the British media is constantly trying to flout it.

Hoping and praying that Madeleine is found safe and well.

triplets · 14/05/2007 22:07

I have just switched on and heard this news, it makes me feel sick in my stomach, brings back Holly and Jessica. Oh God lets all pray that she will be found alive, its so so awful.

jenk1 · 14/05/2007 22:08

gaynor is another translator, she used to go to school with robert and said she hadnt seen him for many many years, then she said he had told her a couple of years ago he was a father and then a couple of minutes later she said she hadnt seen him for many many years again.
jus observing on something i saw, not jumping to any conclusions.

LilyLoo · 14/05/2007 22:08

Agree Georgie everyone is desperaste for news but too try and run rough shod over the portugese authorities isn't the right way to go.

Wolfgirl · 14/05/2007 22:10

just seen the footage. Oh my goodness! why have these searches not been carried out already! We have the best police force in the world, the best detectives I think. Why are we not enforcing more on the Portugese forces! Heck there is life at stake here! aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrgggggghhhhhh, makes me so angry. very simple back to basics searches! so, Madeleines scent went cold at the supermarket, the UK detective thinks she actually walked out in search of her parents and an opportunist has taken her. . I dont know, its just not thorough enough. and its all very admirable for the parents to praise the portugese police force, but who knows, maybe they have been advised to do so, keep them sweet etc.

Bubble99 · 14/05/2007 22:11

Shiny. Your post at 21.53 is spot on about attention seekers hanging around crime scenes to make themselves feel important.

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:12

Wolfgirl- you mean the John O'Connor interview?

yes, felt same after had seen it too.

LilyLoo · 14/05/2007 22:12

or maybe Wolfgirl they think they are doing all they can ? I not sure it's right to say we could have done better. British police are there now but they still haven't found her ?

Wolfgirl · 14/05/2007 22:13

yes.

dinny · 14/05/2007 22:13

here

miggy · 14/05/2007 22:13

Jenk1-I think Gaynor and robert probably went to school locally as expat children in portugal-hence them both being translators and both knowing local police. Portugal is not that huge that it would be unusual for uk children growing up there to all know each other.
