I am so worried about this little girl, but can't always find out on the tv, so I thought I would start this, as the thread is talking about stuff, I just want the latest updates please. If this offends anyone I am sorry, but I want to know the updates on this case.

LaBoheme.... my point is merely that nobody takes a blind bit of notice that these other children from poor countries get kidknapped and sold, its as if we dont care cos it doesnt involve our precious country..

ThatBeetroot · 09/05/2007 16:28

yes why would they draw attention to the child? Why would they even take her out of the van/car.

MrsSpoon · 09/05/2007 16:31

Hope something positive comes from this 'sighting'.

auntyspan · 09/05/2007 16:32

....but it's all good, even though they may be false alarms. It means people are taking notice and looking for girls who resemble Madeleine.

Someone must have seen something, and it's just a matter of time before there's a breakthrough...

quietmouse · 09/05/2007 16:35

I agree, people are taking notice. The more publicity the better.

Either someone will see her or someone who knows where she is will see sense and contact police, I hope.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 09/05/2007 16:35

surely if someone was calculated enough to watch the family for long enough to plan to abduct one of their children, a specific child, they're not going to be taking her out in public? surely not? This is a 4 year old child, who most likely would be able to have a conversation with anyone in a supermarket, petrol station etc who asked her name. I just don't believe someone would take that risk.

PetronellaPinkPants · 09/05/2007 16:37

I wonder if this thread was called

A thread for people who are feeling upset by what has happened to Madeleine to come and speculate about what could have happened to her and devour and analyse every new bit of news made up by tabloids to sell more papers in order that they can pass the time

how many people would be posting

LaCerbiatta · 09/05/2007 16:37

Actually, I think that things like this are precisely why the portuguese police prefer not to have the collaboration of the public, because it leads to so many false alarms that it disperses the investigation too much.
I know that the UK has a lot more experience in situations like this and the USA as well and they seem to have shown that the collaboration of the public does bring positive results.... Maybe the portuguese still need to realise this?

minkybiscuit · 09/05/2007 16:39

Think that was my point Petronella

ScoobyDooooo · 09/05/2007 16:39

I did start a thread for people to discuss what is being said in the news but everyone has choosen to invade UCM's thread, hey ho...

UCM · 09/05/2007 16:40

I asked MN towers for this thread to be deleted as its causing problems and I get in enough trouble on here without being the OP of a huge bunfight.

MN Towers said no, as they feel that discussion of this incident is valid, fair enough.

I would've like two separate threads though, one for discussion and one for news updates only, the link in an earlier post made me cry.

OP posts:
scatterbrain · 09/05/2007 16:40

It's not though is it ?

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 09/05/2007 16:41

I did reply to your thread scooby but it seems others didn't. this is a public forum, to my knowledge there are no filters that can be put in place that limits the postings on threads to links only, as surely "news only" implies that only links to news sites with information may be posted.

auntyspan · 09/05/2007 16:41

Of course we are going to discuss it. If we just wanted news we'd be looking at the BBC / Sky / Reuters sites.

LaBoheme · 09/05/2007 16:44

Whom are you assuming dosen't care allgone? I care and the people I know who do work for Amnesty International care. The press dosen't cover these stories and that is wrong in a sense, which is why certain international cases of infanticide etc. don't reach a huge section of the public, but please don't assume that I or "people" are only feeling compassion because Madeliene is British.

UCM · 09/05/2007 16:44

I truly agree that this should be discussed, I don't believe whatsoever in censorship of anything really. You should be able to discuss on MN freely about anything. However, I just wanted to click on here each time I have some free time and find out about leads, or if she had been found. That was my only reason for starting the bloody thread as I couldn't be arsed to pick out the news updates from the other one, which had 100's of posts on it

OP posts:
Marne · 09/05/2007 16:45

was just waching sky news and they did'nt say anything about any sighting, they said they have no clue's to where she is. It makes me so , im sure there is more they could be doing.

ScoobyDooooo · 09/05/2007 16:45

I know wannabe, i think UCM started this thread because all she wanted was updates on the news & she had to trawl through the other one to find them, that is the only reason i started the other thread because i thought it could be a good idea.

I know there is no rules but people are only going to argue on here because of the title of this thread.

UCM · 09/05/2007 16:46

X posted there Scoobs

OP posts:
ScoobyDooooo · 09/05/2007 16:48

So we did but great minds & all that

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 09/05/2007 16:57

aw UCM I totally understand why you posted a "updates only" title, but generally if you post "have there been any updates" someone usually will reply pretty pronto with anything written further down that's been updated.

I think it's easy to say "they should/could be doing more" how do we know? how do we know what they are/aren't doing? They're not telling us after all - and every police force has limited resources, they can only search so much ground at one point in time... there seem so many people on this and other sources eg on the phone-in on 5 live yesterday that talk of "the police should be doing x, I wonder why they didn't do y, ... what they should be doing now is z..." almost as if they think they themselves could do a better job.

jampot · 09/05/2007 16:59

and the other one was started purely for the same reason but with a wrong choice of title . Basically it wasnt intended that everyone judge the McCanns or anyone else who would/would not leave their children as was happening on the initial thread.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 09/05/2007 17:11

and I don't think any judging went on on that thread did it jampots? although there was a lot of speculation.

I think some people just don't want it discussed. at all. But I think that most people, for whatever reason, will talk about it, to their friends, family, I walked past two women on the way to preschool who were discussing it in a slightly "I'll lock up my children from now on" type of way, which some may see as an overreaction, but none the less I don't think there are many people who haven't talked about it - I simply don't believe that there can be mothers out there who would say "oh that's sad" and never speak of it again.

And I think something like this does make people sit up and think about their children's safety - not in a judgemental "I would never do that" way, but it does make people think how easy something like that could happen, albeit instances like this are extremely rare.

scatterbrain · 09/05/2007 17:32

Just caught up after school run.

I didn't want people not to discuss it - I just wanted them to discuss FACTS and not to speculate what might have happened to Madeleine. I found the links to the paedophile websites absolutely disgusting and wholly inappropriate.

Some things are better left unsaid. We all know what could have happened to her, we don't need it spelt out.

Just my opinion though - and as others have said it's a free site and my choice can be not to read things I find distasteful.

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 09/05/2007 18:30

ey wait a minute it was not a link to a paedophile site - that implies that I posted a link to a paedophile site which is absolutely not true - it was a news story quoted from the portuguese press - if it had been on the bbc would it still have been inappropriate?
