Interesting debate, isn't it? We have done both kinds of holidays over 22 years and if you ask my 3 at university if they minded going in the Sunsail kid's club they'd say it was great and they loved it and made friends but also enjoyed their time with us each day too. I was fascinated to hear them on the few occasions last year one of the twins might have suggested they'd rather stay out of the club that day telling the twins how much fun the clubs were and saying I should force them in because they'd love it when they were in and it was good for them to mix with other children etc.

I love family holidays but I also like some time completely peaceful, silent, swimming, reading, sleeping after lunch, relaxing and I don't find under 5s give you that opportunity.

Never understood parents who want to be with under 5s 24/7. Don't we get on well with everyone if we aren't together all the time - doesn't that also apply to husbands and wives too. The separations are as important as the being togethers.

Kids clubs only ever take them for 1.5 hours at a time though, so it's hardly "not seeing" them. Also the kids clubs usually have activities which they do in the shade/indoors which means you are less worried about sunburn. Otherwise the ds's would spend the entire day in the pool under direct sunlight.
My Mum usually comes on hols with us and lets dh and I get out every other evening. Could never bring MIL though!

iirc the Praia da Luz resort wasn't the original choice for MW in last year's brochure. Portugal was introduced as a MW destination last year and the original resort featured in their brochure either wasn't finished or didn't meet their criteria in time for the summer season to begin. We tried from about this time last year to get hold of brochures specifcally to look at Portugal for October half term and came across this anomaly between the one in the brochure and the one shown online, as they had switched resort. Presumably someone at MW then made a decision to continue with Praia da Luz this year despite it being different to their orignal concept.
